Warwick TV Tropes list - All the cliches they got
So im a big fan of this website called TV Tropes, dedicated to being an encyclopedia of all the cliches or things you might encounter in films, games, stories, anything..
As such, i wanted to see exactly where the new
Warwick stood, and what cliche's and tropes Riot's design team took despite there best efforts to make him their own (because as we know, everything has been done). I personally love the new warwick, so i took some time to see what tropes he fits in, here is what i found:
Anti-Villain: Started out as a gangster, now a monster, but has since then stopped killing indiscriminately, Warwick is a perfect example of an Anti-Villain.
Pragmatic Villainy: Aside from his goal of cleaning the streets through violence, which is the only true way in zaun, he uses a girl who isnt his target to bait out his real targets, a perfect example of Warwick's pragmatism despite being a rage filled beast.
Our werewolves are different: While technically a chimera, Warwick is still League of Legend's wolfman.
Painful Transformation: The description of the process he went through was so painful Warwick severed one of his arms, shattered his mind and later literally died in the process, which ended up being the final catalyst.
Transformation Horror: Classic man transforming into beast/monster. The description of his transformation while he is dead is quite horrendous.
Back from the Dead: as listed by himself and Singed
, Warwick died. Whatever chemicals he got pumped into him later re-started his body and finished his transformation.
Covered in scars: "more scars, as if I didn’t have enough". Warwick is covered in scars, most of which he's done to himself.
Healing Factor: Warwick has a powerful healing factor of some sort, unknown how much, but its powerful enough to grow back severed limbs and revive him from death and keep him going after hours of agonizing torture.
This was his true form: "I became the beast I always was". Singed said he saw the beast inside and only wanted to unleash it, Warwick said Singed was right.
Gone horribly right: Unfortunately for everyone else in Zaun who has spilled blood, Singed got exactly what he was looking for.
Badass: I mean just look at him, hes so fucking cool.
Mighty Roar: His howl (ARGH-WHOOO).
Roar before beating: The teaser trailer. He lets out a huge roar before he leaps at the thug and tears him to ribbons. This has earned him his nickname amongst the Zaunites.
Hell is that Noise: Hearing his very distinct howl in the night must suck for victims. Also, perfect example in his short story, he growls, and instantly the runner girl hears it and just flies off.
Wolf man: Sub trope of our werewolves are different, but yah, even with a fox tail and bat ears, hes mostly wolf-man in appearance.
Absurdly sharp Claws: his metal claws can slice through steel like butter, that’s even before they burn hot.
Pay evil onto Evil: "You hurt them, I hurt you", "the blood you spilled calls to me". He is out to kill all the baddies, he's basically the Frank Castle of Zaun. He specifically targets those who have spilled blood via violence.
Disproportionate retribution: Being dismembered by a giant claws and teeth might be a little over the top for some of the more passive crooks who mostly steal or dish out beatings now and then instead of actually killing anyone.
He who fights Monsters: "It takes a monster to gut one" Warwick takes on anything he deems bad, whether it’s a machine man chem-baron, psychopathic killer or whatever creature is threatening the inhabitants of zaun.
Well intentioned Extremist: He wants to make Zaun a safe place free of fear, his method however of murdering everyone is a little extreme.
Berserk Button: If he smells blood or something that reminds him of himself (hate is another trigger).
The power of Hate: As well as one of his triggers, warwick's hatred for himself is one of his motivations, as he can see his old self in the eyes of those he hunts.
Glowing eyes of Doom: Even his normal green eyes are incredibly intimidating and scary, but it gets much worse…
Red eyes, take warning: When his eyes turn red (from having smelled blood or having the juice pumped into him), it’s a sign your about to get smashed.
Detect evil: He seems to be able to smell those who has spilled blood, as such he can detect who truly deserves death.
My god what have I done: Both as a man and sometimes as a monster. He stopped killing indiscriminately when some of the memories came back to haunt him and made him remember that killing randomly is just wrong.
The atoner: While he cant quite remember his past, he knows he did horrible things, and now wants to turn his situation to something where he will do good.
Must make Amends: He tried when he was a man, and part of the reason Warwick is specifically targeting criminals is because some part of him wants to make amends for his past, accepting who he is and embracing it, but using it for 'good'.
The Dreaded: Known as " The Howler " amongst the Zaunites, many have survived or lived to tell of his existence, as such he has quite the dreaded reputation amongst Zaun, even for those who he isnt out to kill, like the runner girl in his short story.
Oh Crap: The reaction of most thugs/victims who hear his howl, see his glow, or who cut themselves when they know Warwick is after them.
Curb stomp Battle: Most of his victims, even if they are big strong badass mooks armed with acid-shotguns, don’t last 2 seconds against him once he is within melee range of them.
Driven to Villainy: He tried to leave the old life of a gangster behind, and Singed flung him back into villainy by kidnapping and transforming him.
Made of Iron: "pain, nothing!" Warwick is pretty durable, more so thanks to his healing factor. The amount of pain he endured in singed's lab makes most injuries nothing to him.
Fully Embraced Fiend: Warwick has happily embraced the beast within, even saying "This is who I am", "give in to the beast", "The man I was, I killed him first", he care nothing for his past humanity or clinging to it.
There is no kill like Overkill: Because a regular body being slashed several times by a white hot burning metal claw that can slice through steel is over doing it.
Rule of scary: for those in the receiving end, as if it wasn't bad enough being hunted by a werewolf, he's a chemically enhanced cyborg werewolf with a flaming metal claw. Also, the sound of his howl as he closes in on you makes most goons crap themselves in fear.
Loves the sound of screaming: He loves it when they scream as they die.
Black and Gray morality: Warwick's whole being, motivations and actions are a perfect example of this.
Dark and Troubled Past: A Gangster troubled by his past life of killing, he tried his best to change his ways.
Necessarily evil: "If you die, how many live?" Same as Frank Castle, he kills so other won't have to die.
Vigilante Man: Since he is out killing Zaun's criminals outside of the restrictions of the law, he fits into a 'vigilante' role… even though hes a full blown beast.
Was once a man: Before Singed got to him. Partially sub-verted, if we consider he was always a monster underneath.
Ax-Crazy: He was pretty much this right after he revived. Later, when he stopped killing indiscriminately, only when he gets triggered by blood or hate, he rips apart anything that is in his vicinity. He is quite unstable, his memories flashing in and out. Even to those he dosent intend to kill, when he loses control, Warwick didnt know if he had killed the girl he was trying to save.
Chaotic Neutral: Type 1: Hedonist: He does things his way, ignoring any law, since its necessary, but he isn't really doing this for the good of the people truly, as he said "Cant save all of you… don’t want to", he's not really out to save everyone, he tries tho, like he did with the girl in his short story, but in the end he is a beast, he wants slaughter and to clench his bloodthirst, thats his one true desire, he just happens to direct that blood thirst to a more noble cause; cleaning Zaun through brutal violence.
Unstoppable Rage: Once he is triggered with all the red juice pumping through his body, the only thing that’s stopping him is when all his targets are dead.
Freudian Excuse: both his past, and what
did to him.
Judge Jury and Executioner: "you answer to me". Warwick kills everyone he comes across that he deems evil or deserving of punishment. They are judged by the smell of blood.
