Additionally, I don't think there was really any confirmation of a relationship in the old lore outside of one sketch - which at this point is apparently just an in-game fan shipping of them by whoever doodled it (probably Quinn).

If you have the time to sit and draw someone who doesn't even know who you are, you're most likely stalking them - there would be no other way to get that kind of detailed drawing. If he's drawing a girl who doesn't know him, based on her actual appearance, and putting her with him in sketches, do tell how that isn't creepy?

The sketch probably doesn't even exist anymore in canon.

No, it's very unlikely. The drawing portrays both of them with an embarrassed expression on their faces, as if the situation of being seen/drawn together made them feel uncomfortable.

It only worked in the old lore becuase the Institute of War allowed them to be in proximity.

Now Lux seems to busy and wouldn't have reason to be sent to Piltover.

Maybe it was the other way around, Ezreal could have arrived in Demacia at some relic site that was important to the Demacian government for whatever reason.

seems pretty unlikely. in the new lore Demacia and Piltover seem like natural enemies, and ezreal was described in his lore as mostly exploring shurima and the jungles south of piltover, both of which are a good bit closer than demacia

She works as a spy and is constantly sent out on missions. XD I wouldn't be surprised if she's sent to PIltover because Demacia has intel that Noxus is scheming for it. But, that would be Rito forcing them to pair up.
