Hey IronStylus, have you guys settled on a direction for Eve's VU yet?

Rebonack·11/26/2014, 7:03:34 PM·8 votes·10,619 views

Because if not I think I've got something for you guys that would be more or less perfect.

In Scottish folklore there's a faerie/undead/vampire thing called a baobhan sith, a seductive, enticing, razor clawed monster that leads unwary travelers away to secluded places before devouring them. I've seen Rioters say before that the 'succubus/vampire' look is hard to nail down, but mythology has been kind enough to supply us with a creature that basically fits Eve perfectly.

So, what does such a creature look like? Well, tales differ, but generally a baobhan sith was typically imagined as a radiantly beautiful woman in a diaphanous green or white gown with razor-sharp claws that were typically kept out of sight until they were ready to use. In some versions of the story she has cloven hooves that she tries to hide with the dress. Such a creature, if you wanted to boil down its appearance to a few key features, graceful, elegant, and predatory.

I know that would be a pretty major departure from Eve's present BDSM look, but that's what 'classic' skins are for, right?

My hunch is to go more into the.. um.. well.. sorta hybrid succubus, seductive vampire-like sorta thing. I would make her a literal vampire, but I feel she needs that shadowy, creature of the night feel. I'll say right up front that I'm not a fan of the BDSM look, I also think that's kind of a misnomer because it's hard to simplify a sexual affinity into like.. a single look. Don't get me started on 50 Shades of Grey. puts gun in mouth

All that said, the other full time concept artist on the ChampUP team, Lonewingy (concept artist for Nami & her skins, Azir, and part of the Rek'Sai team also) is focusing on Eve. I leave it to her discretion because shes a better everything than I am.

Again, we're still really early on in development, so there's still no solid direction.

I'm so glad someone voted for battle-walrus.

EnvyDragon11/27/2014, 4:15:03 AM5 votes

I, um... I know this is kind of off-topic, but "baobhan sith" is literally pronounced "baa-van shee". Or, uh, "Banshee."

You've picked out a nice angle, but I don't think Scottish Banshee is the first thing I'd think of when I think of Eve.

Rebonack11/27/2014, 6:08:47 PM5 votes

The life draining part felt off to me to. Her lore says that shes expensive assassin for hire.

Life-draining was originally a really important part of her kit. She got a giant on kill/assist heal from her Ult via feeding on enemy life-force. Riot decided to remove that because reasons and it went a long way toward making her kit further disconnected from her (vague) lore.

My hunch is to go more into the.. um.. well.. sorta hybrid succubus, seductive vampire-like sorta thing.

Neat! Thanks for replying, Stylus. The Scottish equivalent of a banshee is, in fact, a pretty darn vampire-y sort of creature. Just not the more 'typical' Slavic sort. A baobhan sith either nom'd a person's life-energy or blood depending on which version of the myth you're talking about. It is, honestly, exactly what you're describing. A seductive vampiric creature that preys on horny, lonely guys. Though, sadly, Eve hasn't had a life-force eating aspect since the heal was removed from her Ult.

I, um... I know this is kind of off-topic, but "baobhan sith" is literally pronounced "baa-van shee". Or, uh, "Banshee."

Yep! The name is pretty much the same, but the details regarding them are pretty darn different. Even more so than the difference between a Japanese kitsune and a Korean kumiho.

You've picked out a nice angle, but I don't think Scottish Banshee is the first thing I'd think of when I think of Eve.

Not at this point, really. But I always find myself thinking of Eve in terms of how her old kit worked, and she was very much a life-stealing monster back in the day. I think Riot is still trying to communicate that with her Ult, but it doesn't come across nearly as cleanly as a heal would.

As an Evelynn main, I wanted to give my opinion on the VU. I think the succubus visual would be beautiful but it doesn't really fit Eve's kit so it shouldn't be the core of the VU. Whereas, the vampire aspect would be nice and match Evelynn's kit of sticky-sustained damage bruiser with an engage. Her ult already has a vampire aspect and as she need some buffs due to jungle changes, I think she could get some sustain either on her passive (like the mana regen) or on her q. Moreover, turning into a bat when stealthed could be a nice feature.

PS : English is not my native language, apologies for eventual mistakes :)

Ironstylus, Lonewingy: I am really excited to hear that seductive vampire is being considered. This is the theme that I connect to Evelynn and is the only one that I believe that makes sense for a cohesive and clear thematic package. I have been wishing for this theme to be chosen since her VU has been up for discussion

Currently, LoL is really missing out on a female vampire theme. Vlad to me is a hemomancer and represents the mage like aspect of a blood wielder, reinforced by his kit. Evelynn however, has the possibility to represent a stealthy and relentless, magically influenced champion/kit that encompasses the other spectrum of the vampire mythos. I can see how some people are complaining of potential overlap but the possible similarities between a vampire Eve and Vlad but this will ultimately make Evelynn feel like she is appropriately placed in the LoL universe in a manner similar to other related champions (i.e. MF and gankplank, fizz and nami, etc.)

Furthermore, some of the only highlights in Evelynn's design come from her vampire like parallels. Her masquerade and tango skins connect with a vampire sense of elegance/atheistic which I think is a theme that has more depth to it. Her default skin and shadow skin reinforce the BDSM look which I believe are distasteful and bland (purposeless sexiness is interesting for 0.5sec as it is trope done to death in video games). I think it is important for Evelynn's sole purpose to not just be "sexy." Sexiness as the primary theme is very flat because it doesn't represent a believable character trope. Sexiness in reality is best established when it is connected to a purpose or agenda. Examples include Selina Kyle/Elise (sex appeal for manipulation and goal seeking purposes) or Medusa/Cassiopeia (sex appeal as a juxtaposition of her curse for her vanity/ambition) or MF (sex appeal to highlight reckless abandon and femininity in a historically male dominated role as a pirate/ship captain). These characters have depth and are believable, respectable and therefore fantasy archetypes that people want to inhabit.

The Succubus trope, when primarily emphasized, is one that I have never found to be effectively executed. The succubus mythos is one that traditional involves seducing men to propagate demon children. The only part of that fantasy that can be incorporated into a video game visually is "demon" and "seducing" so the final package is a demonoid that is scantily clad. Let's take two popular examples, one non successful one (Queen of pain from Dota 2) and one successful one (Kerrigan from SC). QoP is non cohesive fantasy package. All of her in-game quotes are really about being a queen spoken in an overly sexualized way. None of her abilities have anything to do with her fantasy except for the idea of "screaming" and visually, she is neither regal nor sexy, just a woman with wings in a bikini. Kerrigan, however, is a succubus variation (even has a succubus skin in HoS) but everything interesting about her comes from her past as a human and her role as a queen of aliens. She has depth of as a character, is a respected ruler and is an exciting icon villain. Her sexiness is secondary to her own motivations and is visually balanced by her disgusting alien features. It is that exact balancing that Evelynn would be able to achieve if she was a seductive vampire and not a BDSM succubus.

As Vampire, Evelynn could embody a champion who is enigmatic, mysterious, evil, reckless, remorseless. Her sexiness could reinforce a "shadowy elegance" and her role as a "creature of the night" who has little regard for how she is viewed by others. As a vampire, Eve could draw reference to iconic fantasy characters such as Isabella Von Carstein (Warhammer), Elizabeth Bathery or Carmilla (castlevania). She would develop a complete conceptual package and a the fantasy experience that LoL continues to strive for with their character designs.

Please, choose a vampire directionality for Evelynn. Lonewingy's work on nami is some of the best artwork and representations of a mermaid currently available in pop culture (That ruffled fin blouse is brilliant/CFDA award worthy). I could only imagine what she could do with Evelynn as a vampire.

Giving her claws would be pretty cool. Would make her slightly more threatening than the current...whatever the hell she's supposed to be. Generic naked chick.

Rebonack11/28/2014, 5:40:41 AM3 votes

Heh.

Eve's hair is a bit on the derpy side.

Also, it warms my heart that Battle Walrus is winning.

Rito plz

Rebonack11/28/2014, 6:42:20 AM2 votes

Those giant horns look absolutely silly.

But otherwise she looks quite a bit like Eve already.

Rebonack11/29/2014, 5:34:08 PM2 votes

I think the most important information coming out of this topic is that Eve needs a battle walrus skin when she gets her VU.

Gen Pop Tarts11/29/2014, 7:00:39 PM2 votes

since it has come to this, we'd really like to see concept arts of all 4 choices cause honestly a seductive vampire would be interesting and a battle walrus,... WTF? id wanna see that

please riot, we wanna see them in all forms :D

Like all the others I voted battle walrus, just because. (; However:

I think the Sycubus/Vamprie angle doesn't fit her well, she doesn't drain her victims. She is more spite and malice, also vindictive, like Kalista, if for different reason.

But the Baobhan Sith matches almost like a glove.

I would keep the purple color scheeme though and also keep some of that "lots of straps" look, without going straigt into fetish area. Some Gothic gettup might do her well, like this:

Probaly a short hem though, for mobility.

BDSM succubus skirts so close over the T for Teen it's more of a belt than a garment.

And I'll echo the call for Lonewingy to start a conversation when the time is right to get some better concepts.

ThatRussianLad11/28/2014, 1:34:49 AM2 votes

After much thought to what theme could tie her skills, passive, and appearance together. I suggest that her powers be drawn from shadows. A shadow fae would be really awesome. She gains power by ripping souls from their shadows piece by piece. Her invisibility can be explained by hiding in the "shadow" of war. Her abilities are either manipulating her shadow in the case of hate spike and agony's embrace or ripping in the shadow in the case of her e.

Hey, have you ever seen Zeronis' Succubus drawing on DA? I know that it's not specifically Evelynn, but it kinda looks like her.. Just something I stumbled upon though, so I thought that I should share it. :) http://zeronis.deviantart.com/art/Succubus-1-439716303

Rebonack11/28/2014, 4:53:06 PM2 votes

Who knows? This topic might result in Eve getting a Sea World skin with a walrus hat. The game could always use more light-hearted skins.

And! Vampires being related in any way to bats is a pretty recent thing, near as I can tell. More often they were associated with black (ghost) dogs or rats. I've mostly just got a love for folklore and think it would be pretty neat if Eve got a vampire basis from the tales of old as detailed in the opening post rather than from the more modern interpretation of what a vampire is.

NorthernDruid6/18/2015, 10:37:19 PM1 votes

Evelynn strikes me more as some sort of more obscure type of fae (like the"scottish banshee" brought up), than a straight up vampire or succubus.

To me she seems unclassifiable in nature, whether she's a mortal with weird powers or something weird and magical. Whatever she is, it's not something easily classified into the usual fantasy tropes, like vampire or demoness.

I also feel like she's much more likely the type to, if she does drain her victims of something, it'd be tied to emotions rather than life-force directly. I could see her be a gothic fae creature who nurtures herself on the pain of her victims. I could not see her be a straight up seductress who drains them in the shadows.

Her appearance, her unusual gameplay aspects (what with the stealth and the savage clawing and the sinister spikes and slow breaking, and the shield drained from the pain of others), and even voice. All suggest to me a creature you'd be likely to encounter in a faerie tale rather than a horror movie.

For those who are familiar with the World of Darkness line of (pen&paper) roleplaying games, I'd definatively see her fit into Changeling: The Lost, whether as villain or hero. Whereas Vampires are too refined and...well, dead. And succubi are too binary, and have too understandable goals.

I should stop before my post starts bloating like they usually do <.<

But the look I like best for Evelynn would be something like:

Elegant with hidden Savagery ,Gothic Fae.

Bears Dont Care11/27/2014, 7:17:15 AM1 votes

Ahri isn't an elegant seductive lady. Elise is elegant but monstrous in appearance. Leblanc...yeah I can see it with Leblanc.

TsunaFlame11/27/2014, 7:02:55 PM1 votes

Hey why not make eve have her hair only rise up when she is standing still but not as a solid Mass but breathing and when her dash is on her hair should be straight ajd trail behind like any person with long hair only if ahe is walking so fast and when she is invisible, when invisible it doesn't go up all the way kinda like in water flowing around.

Here's a weird idea but you know you could make an outfit for her and dance like lady gaga music video "You and i"

Mirage Night11/28/2014, 5:04:09 AM1 votes

My only problem with "Classic" skin is I hate her current hair style on it. If they did one it would keep it.

lolipopevelynn11/29/2014, 3:29:13 AM1 votes

ive always pictured eve as a mystique like character. she dresses the way she dresses because she can and she wants to. she has no real desire for men, but the men that become attracted to her clothing are just easy prey for her.

thats why im not sure why you guys arent just going in that direction. mystique doesnt have any BDSM or stripper like clothing, but at the same time she doesnt dress like a princess either. she has very revealing clothing that shows alot of skin, but not too much of it. just enough to really tease the good parts of her body. (and for the record, im not talking about the xmen movies obviously).

there are alot of ways to make a women look sexy and even reveal alot of skin without resorting to the BDSM/stripper route (altho i like it so i have no complaints if thats the direction u take her lol)

Rebonack6/18/2015, 7:23:03 PM1 votes

Rise from your grave!

Gettin' this topic a bump because I'm curious whether or not Riot has made any headway on Eve. Mostly, I want to know if you guys have decided on a direction for her visual update yet.

And if you were willing to share some concept art with us that would be super-keen =D
