Are Darkin Void-Corrupted Aspects?
Upon listening to some of Aatrox's special interactions, I noticed quite a few comments towards the various Targonian champions, with the most important voice lines for this being the ones he directs and Pantheon and Zoe. Throughout these lines, he calls Pantheon a betrayer, and wants to hear him "cry of friendship" and "scream of brotherhood." With Zoe, he says that he "[knows] it was [her] that gave [humans] the tools to trap [him]," which implies that she would have known how. Given that aspects are typically put into people and each have varying levels of control over their hosts and that darkin require human hosts now that they have been trapped in weapons, it is very much possible that they were once aspects.
Aatrox also has several important lines regarding the void, most regarding being corrupted or resembling them. We currently know that the primary enemy of the targonians is the void creatures, and as of this writing, part of the Darkin's lore is that they were drawn here by the use magic by humans. I could very well see humans calling void creatures here a la the Fall of Icathia.
One of the interesting things about this theory is that we already have an aspect who descended from targon and has an inhuman form: Soraka. Soraka's current lore blurb is that she "gave up her immortality to protect the mortal races from their own more violent instincts." Given her form, it is possible that Darkin's forms were once akin to hers, but were warped by the void, becoming as Aatrox and Rhaast are.
I could very well see the darkin having fought against the void that the humans summoned, and were twisted by their battles against the void, as many who interact with the void are. Seeing these corrupted Aspects, humans likely attacked back in fear, believing them to be the very same thing they just fought. The darkin began the "darkin war" in retaliation, and the rest of the aspects helped humanity trap them, with one of them being the "Golden Armored Warrior Queen," perhaps the pantheon of the time, or the aspect of the sun.
