Why do the trees on the Shadow Isles have spooky faces carved into them?

The original Mario game booklet says that the blocks you keep destroying are actually the residence of the Mushroom Kingdom (aka: Toad and family) that were transformed by Bowser and company. Could be a similar thing with the residents of the Shadow Isles

Though I'm not sure if the spooky faces are a thing in the actual Shadow Isles or just some silliness on the Twisted Treeline map. I can't recall seeing any trees with faces in any of the Shadow Isles art.
