Why do the trees on the Shadow Isles have spooky faces carved into them?

Is this a natural twisting of the landscape by dark magic?

Or did the ghosts take up trunk-carving as a hobby?

Though I'm not sure if the spooky faces are a thing in the actual Shadow Isles or just some silliness on the Twisted Treeline map. I can't recall seeing any trees with faces in any of the Shadow Isles art.

Its likely a result of the souls of the dead merging with the trees.
