There's a part where Yasuo says: >“Nothing was broken that cannot be mended.”
Now Remember Riven's champ select quote is: >"What is broken can be reforged!"
Looking closely, you will notice that they use different wording but pretty much have the same meaning. This begs the question, were Riven and Yasuo friends before the death of the Elder?

It's unlikely they were ever friends since riven is noxian and yasuo is ionian but we do know there stories happen around the same time, riven leaves noxus after an ionian attack rubs her the wrong way and yasuo is marked a murderer for a crime he didn't commit
It's a theory that riven was the one to kill the elder, he died during a noxian attack when yasuo left his guard post and riven is a noxian who uses the wind technique (her ults called windslash and even in game yasuo has a special taunt when she uses it)
The parallels are there but it's not totally confirmed, but that's the story I'm most excited about hearing
No they weren't. They've never interacted in the lore.
More likely they just have similar character arcs.

"For my next trick, I'll make your health bar disappear"
