Galio's Rework Needs a Rework

Hello, everyone!

I want to continue the discussion of Galio's rework. Personally, I am not a fan of the rework at all. Here are the issues that I see:

  • does not seem like a gargoyle to me anymore; he is too flamboyant and less daunting
  • his attitude has completely changed; he is a cool jock or "bro" instead of a solemn gargoyle
  • he looks too much like a transformer with the body of a WoW Draenei
  • ironically enough, he has less detail
  • he just isn't . . . Galio

Let's take a look at Galio's old quotes:

Upon Selection "A guardian is always prepared."

Attacking "Assault from above!" "The will of Demacia." "Preemptive strike." "With great force." "Justice will be done." "So be it."

Movement "In flight." "An honor to serve." "I will protect.." "On the approach." "Moving out." "Remain alert." "By your command." "Without fear." "I will not fail."

Taunt "You should come back with more bad guys."

Joke "Two birds with one stone? Have you met my parents?"

Okay. So, he's pretty solemn and rather quiet, right? Even in his background information/story, he is tame. Galio was "[s]tripped of his reason for being . . . [and] despaired." He's not this flamboyant transformer we see in his update. It is also noted that "[f]or years he remained in solitude, standing vigil over the bones of the master he had failed to protect... a literal monument to his own everlasting shame." If anything, he's pretty gloomy. The only "heroic" mentions of Galio are in the last lines of the background/information when "Galio arose from his silent purgatory and followed in the wake of this brave creature. He had a new reason to live: to fight for the will of Demacia."

Now, let's fast forward to the rework. This lugubrious gargoyle is completely gone and a completely new champion has awakened, quite literally. To quote Galio himself on the rework post: "I only wake up when it's time to squash something. And I'm awake right now."

Err, okay. I guess he has a new fire under his gargoyle butt. Then the next sentence completely contradicts this: "Looming brazen above Demacia's walls, the colossus stands with silent lips." A few more sentences and we also see that he is supposed to be patient, waiting only for the time to defend what he stands for: "But—like imprisoned lightning—the colossus is waiting. And when he's most needed, he'll stretch his conquering limbs again."

So, is he excited to wake up and hit things, or is he reserved and waiting to defend his home?

Let's continue. Galio is now "a stone-cold warden who loves making earth-shattering entrances to teamfights" who "smashes skulls on the frontlines, grabbing glory for himself with rowdy taunts." Did you just say that Galio was rowdy? Huh? I thought "the colossus strands with silence lips" and "the colossus is waiting." Maybe he's just bipolar? The next section mentions that "Galio wants to hit you, and he also wants to make you hit him back. It doesn't much matter who's doing the hitting—the living statue just needs to stretch his bulky, long-dormant limbs, preferably by beating up a lot of folks." So why does he suddenly want to beat people up all the time? I don't get it. In his old quotes, it is "[a]n honor to serve", not an honor to punch things.

Also, can we please keep in mind that Galio is currently Galio, the Sentinel's Sorrow? He is LITERALLY the embodiment of remorse.

What happened? This isn't Galio; this is a completely different champion.

Yes, Galio needed some update and some love. This, however, is not an update; it is a complete and utter redesign.

Actually, this Galio is still quiet sad, he only wake up because of magic and he have to destroy the sources of magic everytime to protect other. Here is the part in his short lore entry "But his triumphs are always bittersweet, for the magic he destroys is also his source of re-animation, and each victory leaves him dormant once again." So yeah, Galio used to be all sad and remorse, but after certain interaction with someone ( Poppy ), he accept what he is, he became more light heart and happy even though he know that he will die (just imagine All Star Superman comic) Also there are some lines in his VO that you intentionally missed "Goin' to sleep means sayin' goodbye..." interaction with Poppy "I like you, you are the only one who didn't change"

Agree with you here, and that's coming from someone who has liked pretty much every rework so far. This is the only one I dislike and they somehow managed to make me hate almost everything about it.

The rework makes galio look more appealing to young children. I like the old one, just like Yorick, where they looked mystical

Its quite clear they moved away from the gargoyle theme and replaced it with a colossus as his title says. Yet you can still see some resemblance to a gargoyle like his legs and tail and wings. i mean they even did it to WW as well from werewolf to chimera. Now obviously WW doesnt look that different from the old other than the augments and Galio looks alot different. I understand not everyones gonna like it of course and i respect that i didnt like it either but then it warmed up to me id love to see a skin or something to make him more gargoyle but as he stands i find that his looks and personality fits a demacian protector alot better than the pre rework Galio and hey maybe when his lores out we'll find out why hes more joyful than sorrow.

Hey, WeedWicker!

Thanks for joining in the conversation. (:

It is definitely clear that they switched themes, but they also completely switched Galio's personality and character. Warwick's update emphasized the experiments he endured and the "Zaul" side of him, but he was still the same bloodthirsty werewolf that found it "fun when they run!". Now, Galio is tied more to Demacia, but he also took a complete 180 and is now a heroic, jock-esque bro. His personality does not fit the theme of a gargoyle; he is no longer a silent watcher, but a flamboyant hero.

If they wanted to create a badass, excentric Demacian, they should have just developed a new champion altogether (which it feels like they did).

This is not-the first rework i've had problems with, but this is the first that is genuinely and fully affecting me with Galio being one of my two mains for mid. I agree with your overall sentiments. The more i've dwelled on it, the more it has seemed to bother me. It feels like they completely disregarded his identity as well as what Galio mains' expectations were to basically cater to the mass playerbase who will only play him now because he's the new shiny toy.

Hello, Sheldonbunny (cute name by the way)!

Thanks for pitching in (and for agreeing with me—that's always nice lol!). Obviously, it is impossible to please everyone. That being said, this is just such a major disappointment. I completely agree with your statement that "they completely disregarded his identity". That sums it up perfectly!

Hey, ItsOrval!

Thanks for joining in. Ha, that's actually pretty understandable. Galio is such a bright and "rowdy" superhero now; it is ironically childish compared to his old self. Once again, I must repeat myself by saying that Galio is now a transformer lol.

I think some of your misunderstanding with his attitude is that he only wakes up when absorbing magic. That means he is really only woken up when it is time to "squash" things and that can very well be his general attitude. When he isn't absorbing magic however he becomes nothing more than a looming statue again.

So as a statue he is reserved since he literally isn't anything more than stone. He isn't even thinking so far as we know. This is the whole "Patient" thing because nothing is more patient than stone. His actual attitude is much more fierce, since that is what he was designed to do and all he knows. However he isn't the one who wakes himself up, he doesn't have control over that. As such he is only woken when Demacia needs him because Demacia choose when to wake him up.

Basically it is like a Nuke. It can lay around for ages and be completely dormant and patient. But when it is needed it makes a big ass boom because that is it's nature.

As a side note personally I think his visual makes much more sense. Previously he did not look demacian in any way and he still looks like a gargoyle because a gargoyle is just a living statue, usually with wings. Now he actually matches what a demacian statue would look like and it makes sense. There is another post on the boards that goes into much more detail on that.

Personally I found his visual change startling, but that doesn't mean it is bad. It just means it takes some time to adjust to. Honestly in my 2 PBE games on him I can say that he feels more like how a Gargoyle built to defend Demacia should feel. Yes his attitude changed quite a bit, but brooding attitudes don't tend to transition well across something like League in game. It honestly makes sense that his attitude changed, especially since Demacia is the place of heroes. It makes sense for the people that live there and the things created there to lend themselves a heroic light.

I mean this is an inevitable reaction to most reworks. Even though I am a huge fan of this work and actually makes me wanna fucking play him again. (Mainly because of his voice. Because it is Roadhog's voice actor that is voicing the new Galio.) What people have to realise that eventually. Most of the champions will receive a rework or a spell change.

I am happy with this rework and I will definitely play this champion a lot the moment it goes live. It feels much more like a guardian now. Especially with his ulti.

I think you might want to wait a little bit longer and read the new Bio for Galio when it's released. Here's all the information they've given us.

"Outside the gleaming city of Demacia, the stone colossus Galio keeps vigilant watch. Built as a bulwark against enemy mages, he often stands motionless for decades until the presence of powerful magic stirs him to life. Once activated, Galio makes the most of his time, savoring the thrill of a fight and the rare honor of defending his countrymen. But his triumphs are always bittersweet, for the magic he destroys is also his source of re-animation, and each victory leaves him dormant once again."

With that in mind, his voice lines indicate that he is never awake for long. He is still always a silent protector of Demacia, always watching, and only ever 'awakens' when a sense of great magic is nearby threatening the city state. His voice is jovial because he is alive, able to move, and ready to take action to help. He sounds a little like a bro only because of that excitement, but he has very solemn lines as well because he knows once he stops the danger. He's going right back to sleep for who knows how many centuries.

I think you hit on one of the major problems that I had with the rework. There were aspects of the old Galio which were quite likeable. This rework seems to have lost a great deal of the charm. (I often had visions of the old Disney program, Gargoyles, when I was play Galio - thinking that he would have fit right in with that bunch. Now, he just seems "meh".) And yes, I hate saying that considering that probably some effort went into it.

I didnt particular like old galio kit. I bought him with ip and got a refund after a few games with him. I love the idea, old lore, and that he was described as a tanky anti-mage mage. Funny meta bending stuff. THis guy is heading for top lane though not mid. He is another bruiser it seems like to me. Be the first ap bruiser probably but still a bruiser.

He isn't the "Sentinel's Sorrow" anymore, though. That's one of the whole points of the update. The whole "Galio is sad" angle was something that was never reflected in gameplay and only showed up in his Lore. Which, unfortunately, roughly .05% of players probably read.

You can see that with a lot of the newer champs and redesigns, Riot's making an effort to give them personality through their gameplay, not just in written Lore. Jhin is a huge example there. He's very meticulous and a little vain, so all of his animations are very direct and flashy. Ivern's friendly and goofy, so he has a lot of abilities based around helping out his pals, both in the Jungle and on his team, and even his walk animation gives him his silly demeanor. With Galio's new kit, pretty much everything he has is based around getting in the middle of things, protecting allies, and busting shit up. So his new model and animations (look at that sweet pose on the ult, hot damn) as well as VO reflect that. And that's something you can't really miss, you don't have to read the lore to get that.

It is sad to see Galio's old character go, but the unfortunate truth is that very few people probably knew it existed.
