Buffing Garen, the beginner champ who is in a bad spot.

I used to main garen in my early league days and him being one of the simplest champions lots of new players liked playing as garen, but with top laners and other champions getting buffed every patch garen was left behind in the dark once more. So when you think top lane what are the champions that come to mind? Darius, Fiora, Jax, Yasuo, Akali, Illaoi, Irelia, Renekton, Malphite, Sion, Teemo(u little sht), Aatrox, Nasus, Ornn, Chogath, Mundo, Pantheon, Poppy, Riven, Rumble, Gnar, Gangplank, Heimerdinger, Tryndamere, Jayce, Urgot, Kennen, Kled, Viktor, Vladimir, Volibear, Mordekaiser, Yorick etc. notice how many champs i mentioned......... because garen loses lane AND late game to all these champs now. Most of those champs have been buffed and rest were already strong. but garen is the same as many patches before so he got massively outscaled by all of them.

Why garen loses laning phase against those champs? 1- his main ability that made him an early lane bully (Q), can now be rendered useless by increased number of dashes, stuns, slows, parries, dodges or by simply facetanking it and receiving little damage thanks to sheilds, heals, more shields, more heals, damage reduction, or simply going full armor and still dealing a ton of damage back (looking at you ornn, poppy). And once garen uses his q, he's basically dug his own grave because no way to run from all those dashes, slows, pokes, stuns etc. 2- sustain.... garen used to have sustain on his side, not anymore. Most if not all those champs have better sustain than garen so they outheal your damage (simply going corruption pot will make u outheal garen by a lot) 3- MAJOR POINT! garen's E being one of his definitive abilities, is pretty trash early to mid game and gets outscaled late game. the problem lies in the dps part of it, you might notice his max rank E with a black cleaver doing like 700 damage and you might think wow thats op, but then you use it and deal 200 damage.... like what? (shields, lifesteal, damage reduction, armor, slows, stuns all those reduce his E damage by a LOT) because 8 seconds to deal 800 damage using spin deals less damage than having 1.00 attack speed and doing 100 damage per auto ( try it, the ad dps of spins gets heavily reduced by anything defensive) 4- His ult... ahh hexdrinker, one tiny item to COMPLETELY NEGATE GAREN'S R DAMAGE. because BALANCE amirite or amirite? Garens R used to be useful excecute but now its only uselfu on villain otherwise its another ability that deals 200-400 magic damage mid game (very bad at that time of the game) and a lot less early game, and late game it deals around 700 to a tank or bruiser, compared to other executes thats so bad. and before you say "well it scales off of missing hp so its good vs tanks and bruisers" to that i say "buddy, buddy... listen, tanks and bruisers have defensive abilities on top of magic resist. (going full armor and no magic resist is seen VERY rarely) so your ult still deals much less damage than it should" Now his ult range... its your auto attack range, if u cannot auto than u cannot ult them. darius's ult has twice the range of garens ult and it deals all true damage and it can reset. ( getting 5 stacks in not necessary now because darius buffs are strong)

So how can we fix this? well in my opinion as a former garen main who can still play garen somewhat effectively, 1- increase his Q movement speed and duration of movespeed. Also increase Q ad scaling by 0.1 (150% ad scaling instead of 140%) 2- Make his passive heal for 50% more for 2 secons upon reactivating. 3- Make his E deal more damage the more spins you hit on a champion upto 150% damage per spin proc (if he spins 8 times in one E, it should go like this: 1st proc 100% damage, 2nd proc 110%, 3rd proc 120%, 4th proc 130%, 5th proc 140%, 6th proc 150%, 7th proc still 150%, 8th proc still 150%) this helps in longer trades especially at late game which garen currently loses. 4- Increase his ult cast range, reduce cooldown on a successful execute, and Increase his base ult base damage to 200/400/600 and make his ult deal 150% damage on sheilds. 5- against a villain, make his R deal 5% of their max health as BONUS true damage and his E deal 1% of max health bonus true damage on each spin proc

For those who think this might be OP, its not. the buffs on darius (most passive armor pen of any champ, big damage on W), illaoi (having a 6 second cooldown on E thats lasts 8 seconds), nasus (like 12 stacks per cannon, large monsters and kills wt...) are what you can call op The buffs i mentioned will give garen just that tiny edge he needs to actually survive and win a lane, and to be useful tank late game instead of a bullet sponge who doesnt do anything else.

Garen's fine, overly simple champions with no outplay mechanics will eventually lose to ones that have outplay mechanics, that's the nature of a low skill ceiling champion, the benefit of Garen is that you can't screw him up, he has no high risk combo that could get you killed if used incorrectly. You just need to out macro them.

akali is just stupid though lel. ill admit that much any experienced akali player can easily face roll any champ they choose to vs or can 1v5 due to that "gunblade omg where is that damage coming from" mechanic. or lets not forget 1000 dashes and can destroy a squishy even though said squishy flashes and uses all defenses to get away and under tower she still thats that squishy despite any counterplay he tried. (that squishy was me, my tears were real that day.)

anywho... returning to your question i feel garen needs a rework i dont mean the akali kind either i mean he needs somewhat a warwick styled rework to remake his identity to be that heroic soldier leader feeling instead of ramming in and just q e then ur done rinse and repeat till ult. NO!!! he needs a way to sustain combat as a soldier with experience of war/leadership maybe a inspiration passive if nearby allies he can boost their resists by x/x amount scaling on his X amount of ad or resists or ap then (however you please im not a math expert) he needs that "dont worry im coming" feel/comfort that he brings his allies in times of peril thats what his passive really needs, not selfish regeneration or selfish stats only.

his q can stay as is in terms of combat its great for starting out conflicts just lower the base damage a bit then add in attack speed increase by X amount for 3 or 5 hits? (not a expert u decide that part) different styled animation slashes that would reflect his experience in fighting countless battles.

his w is pretty great it allows certain timing of skill to block a important cc/damage attack it should stay as is it helps his (new) passive, to make him less selfish he should have some sort of linking (brethren passive that allows X alignment/banner to link up to garen if hes same alignment/banner as him if they are close by but the effect of his passive is slightly weaker in cases like this to compensate in order to avoid OP situations) system that allows % damage reduction/tenacity by X amount (you decide) it would make him that elite soldier of the military more apparent.

his e honestly is pretty good as a shredder i say it doesnt need a change he can shred for your adcs well plus get that black cleaver bonus.

ult should definitely stay as it is, its actually a pretty nice statement as his character who uses holy power to smite evil it just needs some kind of AP or ad scaling (dont care which) to make him more of a threat late game. (gives up some tank for damage aspect.)
