Introduction

Being an old, old Urgot main, back when it wasn't cool to be one and teammates dodged and flamed (enemies did too) you for every possible mistake that could ever happen, I've seen all things under Urgod's church. It was this image that I saw in the epochs of old, and I still to this day believe it was some grotesque night gaunt or fever dream; I don't believe I actually saw this image:

I found the image to be quite humorous, the dichotomy was self evident. Bloated monster meets star-justice and glitter! And so this image stayed unknown until a few months later when some mad poster shewed the world the horrors of man. The Boards went historical and loved it. What is the typical reaction for a long time fan of a relatively unknown fandom that soon becomes popular? To hate the newly received attention, and so, I hated the skin. To me it represented another joke skin for a champ that all thought was a joke, and I would never see a proper skin for my favourite champ. That was two years ago and now we have a glorious rework and we even lost a joke skin (one that was never that funny to begin with). This:

became this:

(arguably one of the best splash arts)

It is my hope that this introduction conveys that I once found it droll, hated it do to over-saturation to back to loving it. That I am not here for the "Memes", but I am here-for what it is worth-to offer insights on how this skin could fail and can succeed. I am also working under the assumption that this skin will become an inevitability some day. Twice has a Star Guardian referenced Urgot's zeal for glitter and star-shine, many videos have been dedicated to SG Urgot, we have splash arts and even a fan made, albeit preVGU Urgot, model.

Why SG Urgot

It is compelling that a 15 ft. monster who wants anarchy and "crucibles of pain", who grinds people up would ever want to join the ranks of the SG. Maybe he just wants to live a simpler life, maybe he just wants to look as pretty as he feels or maybe he finds the sardonic gesture too good to pass up (for philosophy).

SG Urgot is purely about the humor. The disconnect is fantastic and begs many a question.

Is there an alternate universe where an Urgot believes in justice and fancies sparkly attire? Is this our Urgot who was sick of politics, and the rigmarole of life and sought out the SG's for this new life? Do some of the SG's accept him? Do other's reject him? Was he made a SG, but they can't bring themselves to accept him? Is he a delusional fan and only that? Why would a SG be so brutal? Does Urgot, a philosopher of sorts, fancy irony?

How Riot would promote this skin would be crucial to how it is perceived. You see, when I was first against SG Urgot, it wasn't only that it was a joke skin, it was also because I saw SG as nothing more than anime fan-service. Today that isn't the case. They have added world building to this alternate reality of League. We have multiple SG teams with each member having different opinions on the other members and teams, we have music and art, voice overs, we know males can join the ranks of SG Ezreal, and a new map where they are fighting off monsters.

Making SG Urgot isn't just a meme joke for us real people. Because the SG world has been expanded there are now layers of satire and irony due to the implications of something like Urgot wanting to be SG.

This is similar to Devil Teemo

This skin started from an inside joke but became something more. Riot cleverly gave gate Keeper Galio and line to Teemo. This is clever because it adds a small amount of credibility to this alternate universe of Deamon like skins Teemo Galio Vi and keeps the door ajar for more skins.

I am going to discuss the different ways they can implement the skin and strengths of such implementations.

The Ways They Can Implement This Skin

Price the skin at 750-975

We all know what this price range entails. For Urgot we would see him in some horribly fitting SG outfit with tears and scuffs (think definitely not Blitzcrank). Maybe he would wear a wig and maybe some fake looking confetti on his abilities to shew just how far away he is from being a Star Guardian.

The joke here is that Urgot is a terrible poser of SG, and he might as well be doing cosplay as far as the SG's are concerned.

This skin is reasonably priced and is a safe bet giving Urgot's smaller player base. This skin's joke lies with the fandom and not the SG universe itself.

Price the skin at 1350

This would include beautiful SG particles, his own familiar, and elegant recall and maybe a bubbly voice filter. The familiar would be a less cute/ border line ugly one who never found a SG who would accept them until Urgot shewed up. He wouldn't have the coat armour on his right side, his pale, sickly skin would be shewing, and his star pendant would cover one nipple (Praise the Nipple). Maybe he could have hearts and stars tattooed into his arm and fire glitter blasts out of his big pile driver of a gun.

The joke here is on the SG universe fo what diseased entity would ever okay SG Urgot, the perversion of all that is SG? What does this say about Urgot (in our alternate universe) that he would accept such a position. What would the other SG's say knowing this? Would Lulu begin questioning reality, hang up her hat and leave? Would Jinx no longer feel unique? Would Ezreal fall in love (sorry Taric )?

Which is the better Option

Well, we have seen the history with Riot and joke events. Whenever Riot's joke enters the heart of their world, it has a more universal appeal. The LoL fandom can be great, but in the end, we are all here for the game. Our friends playing it is icing. Look Urf as champion worked because it was bat-shit that Riot would ever implement a champion like this even for a day. The 2014 Urf mode was compelling because we were all trying to play our favourite champs in this perversion of a game-mode we were so use to. League of Draven failed because it didn't have any depth or commitment. It was Draven's head on somethings and not all (even that wasn't all that riveting).

Let's look at Urgot's past joke skin, Crabgot. It was only Urgot with some exoskeleton bits and a loose reference to Southpark's crab-people(?). The joke was one note and even if it did resonate with an extreme few, I really doubt those feelings could persist long afterwards. I think the only reason even picked the skin was irony's sake. It was hideous and not in the good way.

If we go with the 750-975 range then we have a cosplayer. It is alright, but it doesn't offer much to the imagination and isn't interesting to think about. It's because it isn't "real". I am not saying all these skins like this are bad. Take Meokai Maokai . Why he is in his silly little cat PJ's don't matter as much. the aesthetic of a slumber party Maoki is silly and amusing. Even if the joke gets old, the skin still has particles to old it up and keep it compelling. You could argue this type of skin made an investment in its own joke.

My point is, for this joke to not feel "half-assed", it needs commitment. People need to feel when they make the purchase that they are perverting the SG theme. And when I say pervert, I don't mean to tear it down or insult it. I mean in such a way where it can laugh at itself a bit.

Those who Purchase this skin, when they see a Jinx and Soraka botlane, all they want to do is shew off their own way to Star Guardian.

Thank-you for reading.
