How to fix AP itemization
Hearing about the upcoming AP itemization rework, I wanted to give my personal thoughts about it. Riot members mentioned that they want to add more choice to the AP items and I'm really glad to hear about that. Although the current **Morellonomicon ** is a good item and a massive improvement to what was there before it got into the state in which it is now (anyone remembering the overnerfed Athene's while there was no good alternative?), I also don't like to be forced into buying this item first every game on every standard mage. The reason is that I sometimes think there are better choices, for example whenever I am facing an AP or AD assassin. It is surely possible to go for another item first, but the opportunity cost is extremely unpleasent because of the mana issues that come up whenever you refuse to buy it. So I thought, the real problem lies in mana. If Morellonomicon wasn't so crucial to solve this problem, more players would be more likely to consider other options. But what if we removed mana from the equation? I mean, why would you introduce resource restrictions like mana costs if the only result is that players are forced to a build path? Why not instead relieve the restrictions for everybody, but also remove the mana related aspects of Morellonomicon at the same time, so the restriction is still in place and functions as a protection against ability spamming? Imagine that standard mages got their mana costs reduced for mid/late game and the possibility to itemize against mana would go out of the window at the same time. This would open much needed space for choices, for example, between different defensive stats that you can aquire together with AP like Banshees or Zhonias, or more damage, health, or cooldown reduction. Morellos could for example be more focused on more giving cooldown reduction (and maybe just a little mana regen to match the increased rate of spell casts) or some cool unique passives like Grievoius Wounds, or health sustain, everything you can think of except the extra mana that mages rely on at the moment now due to their mana costs. Mages who use mana excessively (tear stackers) like Ryze and Cassio do not need to be bothered with this changes. The standard mages would most likely not consider building their mana items anyway. The next thing that someone should look at is the excessive cost of deathcap and the lack of alternatives to void staff.
