OMEN Possible Abilities & Gameplay Mechanics

Omen was supposed to be the 82nd champion in league of legends but was canceled because of problems in development. I feel that Omen was not able to be adjusted to fit in the current meta at the time. Now its Season 6, we have Gnar, Velkoz, RekSai

and other champions that have been released that would fit into the same category as Omen during Season 1 & 2.

I really like the potential of a ranged auto attack APC and I feel that Omens character model fits that role perfectly.

APC Auto Attack focused - Main Role Mid Lane

Passive Auto Attacks apply spikes to champions. When 5 stacks have been applied a champion the stacks explode for 50 - 250 (based on level) true damage Omen Q - shoots Spikes in a line (Like a Viktor laser). Targets hit are slowed and grievous wounds are applied. (Spikes last for 5 seconds) Omen W - When activated gives him a Movement Speed buff and makes his ranged attack do damage over time. Omen E - Omen Sends a single to his spikes which detonate, Champions standing on spikes are then knocked up and slowed. Omen R - Uses his tail to launch a killer spike that pierces and does true damage range 1k

Update Omen R - Uses his tail to launch a killer spike that pierces and does true damage range 1k When a champion dies to Omens killer spike, the champion explodes leaving spikes in the surrounding area. (This would work with his (E) for combo potiential)

Passive: Vel'Koz passive Q: Viktor laser W: Almost the same as Miss Fortune's attack speed ability E: Cho'Gath rupture R: Sounds similar to Jinx's SMDR.

There you go. As for the niche of "AP Marksman" , it is kinda full. Kayle, AP Varus, Cass (kinda), Teemo, AP Jax, and others can do large amounts of auto-based (or twin fangs) magic damage. As far as visuals go, Omen is unappealing. Not ugly: Urgot is ugly. Omen is just a red blob with limbs and spikes.

Why do people like Omen so much? It boggles the mind.

D-did you just call Jax an AP marksman or were you saying he has an AP build? Same with Kayle. I mean, she does have that ranged...shrugs

But as for why people like Omen...I mean, you say he is a blob with limbs and spikes, well we have a technical blob Zac and I mean his design isn't any different from RekSai in terms of being a beast of sorts.

Personally I like his design. I could see him being a tank/mage person or a tank/fighter. Still, some champions that were scrapped I woulda liked to see what they were going for.

When did I even say Jax. if I did, it was a mistake.

Umm, not you. The guy I responded to on here.

I meant that Jax with an AP build can output sizeable magic damege with his autos via his W and R.

Designwise, Omen really is (in my mind) too "in the past". The model is a mixture of Cho and Rek'sai, and I have yet to see anyone come up with a kit that is anything but "So he throws his spikes in various manners and they do things that other champs already do". Not saying that nobody will ever NOT come up with a good kit that might fit him, but that people should try for a more unique and original concept.

Nikushimi Zero2 votes

Well, yeah. Jax scales very well. Though you kinda said AP marksman before that so it was confusing. :P

And I mean most kits on champions are variations of other abilities. Like on hit passives. They usually do the same thing, but with different effects. Get X amount of attacks and gain X effect.

Or ranged skillshot. Like the recent Jhin concepts long range ability is pretty much Jinx's, but with bigger range and more effects.

Imo if there were to be a kit for him using his spikes for something would be nice since it is his main feature.

If he would be a champion I'd say he'd have something to do with stacking abilities or possibly CC heavy with slows. Who knows. It would be interesting to know what they had planned though.

That's why I said use the Q as a ranged attack which combos with E for knockups and Ultimate also has a on kill effect which combos with E.

What champion uses spikes are a primary source. Yes chogath has Q & E but that only a small bit of his kit. Void champions are known for spikes so it makes sense that one would be the "spike master" and spikes fits perfectly with the theme of the champion. Which is an auto attack base mage.

Well we could compare everyone in league like that.

Jhin passive same as graves with 4 shots and last one crits Q bouncing grenade pretty much the same as Double Up just with an additional bounce. W a longer range Jinx W that goes through minions and snares if rooted. E a caitlyn trap that slows instead of snares. R Xerath's Ultimate just in a straight line instead of hitting from above with 1 additional shot that crits.

Why do people like Omen so much? He's a cool looking champion that should of been made.

No, he was cancelled because they didn't think he was thematically/visually hitting the mark. He was ranged champion that looked like he was melee which, while having a cool design, did not have anything that says "this is a cool champion with an interesting personality" versus just being a generic (if cool looking) minion.

Um I don't see how he would look like a melee champion. He has spikes on his back and he is clearly in a stance that suggests he is about to shoot them. Only melee aspect that I see is his tail which could be used for his ultimate.

At the end of the day they canceled Lee-Sin and brought him back. I think the kit a made is pretty good maybe with a few tweaks it could be something really special.

1374342 votes

Or you know his claws, or his mouth. People thinking he was melee was a common problem, even half the threads about people asking about him or talking about him are filled with people thinking he was melee. It was also an issue they found in internal testing.

The (primary) issue Riot had with Omen wasn't his kit. It was his look. They did not like the way he looked- as I said before they thought he was too generic with no personality. This was back when Riot was just starting their push to make champions look and feel more unique, although it was awhile before they really succeeded on that second goal (the gameplay aspect). It is a cool design, but he doesn't feel like a champion.

How am I ignoring feedback or questions? You asked about the Q - E combo which I replied it would be delayed since everything in League has some kind of cast time. As for the people comparing his kit to other champions I outlined how all champions share something similar to others.

As for his appearance, it doesn't matter that much. You can debate if he is ranged or melee but if you didn't know chogath then I'm fairly certaint you wouldn't expect his Q to somehow magically make a spike pit appear out of nowhere.

The Abilities fit with how the champion looks. As for people saying its unoriginal, I point to every adc in the game that has a upgraded form of basic attack, Dash or MS buff and an ultimate that throws or shoots something.

FloRaider421 votes

How am I ignoring feedback or questions? You asked about

I asked about:

  1. How you want to differentiate him from other champions (Gameplaywise)
  2. How/Or if you would change his visuals (since a lot of people interpret him differently)
  3. How big of an AOE and delay the E has
  4. Why his E has such a short delay and isn't part of his Q (leaving one ability slot open for something new)
  5. If you are aware that a lot of his abilities already exist

You only explained the delay, but the range and AOE aren't mentioned anywhere as far as I can see and the resulting question about why the E is a seperate ability, if you are only ever using it right after E, was completly ignored.

As for the people comparing his kit to other champions I outlined how all champions share something similar to others.

I think there is quite a big difference between: the same and familiar It's true that a lot of abilities exist in a similiar shape or form, but they always have a different purpose in the kit, an unique effect or interaction. Apart from the Q I don't see that in this kit

As for his appearance, it doesn't matter that much.

Yes it does, visuals are a big part of a champions identity and you shouldn't neglect the fact that a lot of people have explained that his visuals are deseptive and lack the champion feel.

As for your example: Cho'Gath looks like a more monstrous godzilla: Godzilla creates Earthquakes by walking around -> Q is basically a localized earthquake with some magic sprinkles on top

Even if you don't agree with me here the rest of his abilities fit his visuals and Cho is bad example concerning visual representation yet still works

Omen looks like a fire-lizard that mated a cactus: Spikes on back -> Thornmail passive pronounced Claws -> melee and a swipe ability Spikes on tail -> Either shoot spikes or slash with them Big mouth -> Some bite or spit ability

The Abilities fit with how the champion looks

Sorry but that isn't enough for a champion. Have you ever considered what kind of playstyle he has or what new and interesting abilities he brings to the game ?

As for people saying its unoriginal, I point to every adc in the game

Kalisita: Has unique interactions with her support and is more dependent on him than others Ezreal: Is very good on poking the enemy while keeping safe Graves: Is an ADC that goes in your face and unloads a lot of burst Tristana: Is very at sieging and can melt towers, if not taken care of

Do I need to continue or do you see the picture ? Almost Every champion has something they excel at and something they are weak to or against. Their abilities all fit together to give them one cohesive and flowing playstyle and they have a clear role or clear purpose when picked.

TL:DR

Just ask yourself one simple question: "Why should I pick Omen ?" summoner 31

######Best summary ever xD

Again this was back in Season 1 & 2. They literally canceled. Lee-Sin and brought him back.
The same would have been said for Rek'sai & Vel'koz back in season 1 & 2.

I think what they wanted to do with him was impossible at the time and ultimately they decided to work on something else rather than make a champion that would require more work than necessary.

Well we have already two apcs more or less with Teemo and to some extent Azir

overall Omen needs something more outstanding for him. he might look cool, but thats about it. Having spikes is simply nothing special and thats pretty much the most outstanding aspect of the champ(which is kinda reflected in your kit, where he only uses spikes)

Q uses spikes W is a MS buff and gives DPS over time. E uses Spikes from Q & Ultimate Ultimate is an execution ultimate

I'm open to suggestions etc. But this to a majority of league champions its pretty diverse.

Yes, this guys theme is spikes, just like Yasuo's theme is wind.

Yasuo Wind Shield for moving. & Critical Strike Passive. Q a upgraded form of a basic attack in a line. W a wind wall. E a dash R A mid air lockup that has a requirement.

When people say he lacks creativity, I don't really see that much creativity in other champions.

How to make a champion Make a theme. Figure out what role the champion will be. Base abilties around that theme and role. And you are done.

RekSai Theme Underground. Passive gives her a upgraded vision while underground but based by movement Q - enpowers her auto attacks into an AOE with increased damage / Shoots a rocket when underground W - Makes her go underground and appear. E - Gap closer, makes tunnels. R - Can teleport to any tunnel on the map.

If you look at Reksai she is extremely basic. A very good champion don't get me wrong but its basic. You go by a theme and you make abilities for that theme.

What makes Omen special would be that he is a ranged auto attacked focus APC. Azir uses Soldiers and that something that is unique to him but he' himself attacking champions. Teemo is the closest thing to an APC that is auto attack focused and he is not a mid laner or even a top laner. Hes just a guy who sits top and split pushes until his team either screws up or he takes an inhib.

Kayle is Melee based and uses a ability to use ranged attacks. Omen would be ranged based, Auto attack, ability powered champion for the mid lane. I honestly think it would be very easy to Riot to make him into a champion that we would all enjoy.

The thing is that Yasuo is not just "the wind guy" of the game, but he is also a Ronin, which is something that no other champ really is(arguably he is even the only samurai, since Yi doesn't look that samurai like, but thats up to debate)

You aren't that wrong about how a champion is done(you are missing the part about the personality/character of the champ),but the important thing is that the general theme(s) of the champ is unique to him/her and the same goes for the playstyle. So Rek'sai is not just an underground champ, but she is THE underground champ, not to mention that she is currently the only real beast in the game.

Meanwhile what is the unique thing about omen? The spikes?Rammus Chogath &Khazix have them too The fact that he walks on 4 legs?Urgot and Hecarim do that too(and Nidalee when she's transformed) His big grin?Ziggs is already in the game

Also when it comes to the kit, there should be something outstanding as well. You say Omen is supposed to be an apc-midlaner,but like i said teemo is there as well and just because omen is supposed to be played mid(something that you can't control directly as people would play him wherever they want) doesn't make him unique. I mean look at the latest champion releases, they all have something unique in their skillsets. Jhin has to time his 4th shot, his passive where killed enemies explode, his ultimate(some argue it is similar to caitlyns or Xeraths, but the only similarity is that it is a high-range-ult) and his special scalings Illaoi has her test of spirit and tentacles Kindred have their ult, hunting mechanic and special zone Shen has now his spirit sword and a dodge-zone tahm kench can eat others and teleport his allies graves is now a melee adc miss fortune has her game where she gets a bonus for switching targets quinn has the highest roaming potential in the game corki has his special package kog'maw his ability to break the AS-limit etc.

Hes in a carry role without a built in dash or escape other than a speed boost in his W. The entire point is he would do tons of damage but would have to focus on not getting jumped on.

He could use his Q-E as a defensive combo. Placing spikes on himself and when tanks jump him activating it and using his W to escape and kite.

What if I told you that Omen is a melee champion? ;P Omen's main problem is that his visuals don't really feel appealing for a lot of people (lack of theme, lack of personality)

About your proposed kit: Lot's of ADC with stack passive already and this one doesn't add anything new Q is the most interesting ability of the bunch, good work there W is just boring it definetly could use some interactions with the rest of the kit E is useless on it's own, which feels weird (only other ability I can think of is Zilean's W) and depending on the delay OP (flash is not counterplay) R what is the range ? Regardless it feels a bit unoriginal

E is only if you are standing on Q. it would be a 0.25-0.50 delay. There are many skills in league that are instant and are knocked ups etc.

FloRaider421 votes

It says that spikes last for 5 seconds and I guess that they would cover quite a bit of ground so it would be a rather big AOE (depends on how big of a blast the knockup is). Most knockups that are ranged have quite a bit of a delay.

HOLYPEPSI1 votes

Chogath Q is ranged and has a huge radius. Would very simple for a combo ability to work.

Q lands + 0.25-second delay then E activates causing a knock up.

FloRaider421 votes

Rupture has 0.7 sec and yours has 0.25 and additionally the Q slows makes it harder to get out of the blast radius. If you are so intend on making it a fast combo why don't move the knockup to Q straight away ?

Q would obviously have some sort of a cast time, then E would have a delay as well since it wouldn't be instant. Since its a combo effect it would be around the same or maybe even a little greater than chogaths rupture.

As for the Ultimate, I like snipe based ultimates. Maybe change the on-kill effect to making his Ultimate explode on kill spreading spikes in the area of death. That way it would give another combo potential for his E.

I know a lot of ADC ranged based champions have similar stacking passives but he's going to be an APC so it would be different since it would change a lot of the match-ups mid.

  1. Explained that already.
  2. He looks like a ranged creature from his appearance, he is from the void. He eats stuff so yes he's going to have claws & a big mouth. If Riot wants to change his appearance as long as they leave spikes on back & on tail, I don't really care. The main part is he would be a unique champion.
  3. Probable 1/2 the size of a kogmaw E
  4. Um that doesn't really make sense. If you get hit by his Q, obviously you are going to walk out of it even if slowed. You don't want to have an ability take 1 second when it relies on another ability to set it up. 0.25 seconds is more than enough delay maybe boost it up to 0.5.
  5. No I'm not aware of any ability that shoots spikes and denotates causing a knockup. No I'm not aware of any that gives a speed boost plus damage over time for ranged champions No I'm not aware of any champion that uses spikes to combo and knock someone up. Yes I am aware that 30-40% of the adcs have long ranged ultimates same with the one that was just released last week.

Did you even read my last post? I completely destroyed the last champion comparing each of his skills is merely a buffed version of something already exists. Then when someone commented, it's not "unique" Look at Yasuo & Reksai.

Two champions have a drag and drop feature in league of legends. That is what his Q would be, I used the viktors laser as a reference because many people wouldn't understand. His Q is not a Viktor laser or a rumble ultimate but would be designed as a drag and drop ability.

Yes his W is a speed boost with damage over time, that's not that amazingly original but a majority of champions have the same thing. Would you rather me make up an impossibly broken W that states Omen could jump on walls becoming untargetable for a given set time? That's completely original but its beyond broken.

FloRaider421 votes

I feel like it is pointless to argue with you... I will try, but please, if you don't care just say so... Okay ?

We can argue all day, but you can't deny that even the fact that we are having this debate means that something about his visuals ain't right Void = Purple Void=Longing Omen=/=Void He looks more like a animal with Zyras powers than anything... 1. Probable 1/2 the size of a kogmaw E

Finally a clear answer

  1. Um that doesn't really make sense.

I pointed out in a previous post how basic and unoriginal Yasuo and Reksai was. Even bashed how the new champ.

Passive Graves with 4 shots instead of 2 Q is MF's Double Tap W is Jinxs W just goes through minions. E is a caitlyn trap / Teemo Shroom that slows enemies and does a small amount of damage. R is xeraths ultimate but shot in a straight line with an additional shot that crits and does 200 damage.

When people tell me that its not original enough I look at this and Yasou and Reksai. I like the new champion, but it doesn't have to be 100% brand new to be good.

FloRaider421 votes

I pointed out in a previous post how basic and unoriginal Yasuo and Reksai was.

Regardless if they are basic they are by no means "unoriginal" They introduced new interactions to the game (Flow, Windwall and knockup combo / Burrow system and tunnels) and have compelling playstyles (Yasuo plays exactly how you would expect a samurai to play, just dashing around his opponents and dealing some decisive sword stikes / Rek'Sai burrows around and builds up a net of tunnels to give herself advantages, just like a Sandshark would do)

And before you start: I know that there are Samurai in other media, but is there another Samurai in LoL ? I bet there is a pokemon or card monster that does exactly what Omen does, but is he unoriginal because of that ? It's about what they bring to the game and not what already exists in any other media

Even bashed how the new champ.

Graves: Gating his insane close range burst Jhin: Promote good targeting give him a good burst with some drawback

MF: Poke or Burst tool Jhin: Biggest waveclear tool

Jinx: Second form of CC used as poke or to chase Jhin: Only form of CC used as combination tool for his burst or as an escape tool

Cait: CC and escape tool Teemo: DPS and zoning tool Jhin: Main source of burst combined with his W

Xerath: Long range poke tool or used to burst enemies Jhin: Long range CC tool or used to secure kills

When people tell me that its not original enough I look at this and Yasou and Reksai.

Is there another samurai in LoL (Yi isn't btw only in a skin) is there another Sandshark ?

Is there another creature with spikes ? Zyra, Kha'Zix and Cho'Gath

I like the new champion, but it doesn't have to be 100% brand new to be good.

I agree with you for once But there are some main things a champion needs to propely work:

Compelling visuals: Since you like Omen so much let's say he got that covered, but you have to admit he looks a bit confusing

New Interaction/Mechanics: The Spike mechanic with Q and E is nice, but feels a bit flat... Maybe build his entire kit around the spikes some more. P: Every X seconds he shoots a big spike that deals extra damage and burrows in the gound Spikes remain for X seconds and apply a small slow when enemies (champions) walk over them Q: Same W: Passive: When enemies get slowed by spikes Omen steals X% of the MS Active: Detonates all dormant spikes slowing all enemies in a small radius around the spikes E: Charges for a short duration and fires X spikes towards target area (Zac E) R: Changes slow from W into a knockup for a short duration and reduces CD on all abilities by X% for the duration of X seconds

Coherent Playstyle: I could slap his entire kit on a hextech rocketeer and you wouldn't be able to argue with me P: Shrappnel or glue explosives Q: Salve of rockets that burrow in the ground W: Steam or electric upgrade for MS and incinerary ammunition for Dot E: He activates all dormant rockets with his trigger R: He shoots a big-ass rocket that explodes into a bunch of smaller ones that burrow in the ground

Lore/Characterization: Well yeah... I got nothing

And some more...

I hope this helps a bit with understanding where I am coming from... If it doesn't, say so

I know everything wasn't done yet with the champion. My skills were just basic. I figured if Riot wanted to pick it up, they would add passives etc. to all the movies.

I'm cool with the P: Every X seconds he shoots a big spike that deals extra damage and burrows in the ground Q: If they step on spikes they are slowed regards. It's like that for a majority of slows that stay on the ground. Example KogMaw E
W: Steals MS is fine with me. E: I guess could change that but I still like exploding spikes. But I think it should be shot in a cone then (like Heimer's rockets) R: I prefer to keep it with the tail ultimate that on kill spreads spikes in the general Area. This way he has really good team fight potential if he lands the ultimate.

That was just a kit I randomly slapped together, but I wanted to get my point across. Mainly that the gameplay should enforce the power fantasy created by the visuals and characterization.
