Pantheon - Delivering on the Spartan Fantasy
I have a half-baked set of ideas for Pantheon; I'd appreciate you taking the time to glance at least at the TL;DR at the end! Kit designers have their own mechanics they like more than others (GypsyLord, CertainlyT are basically x-hit passive and SUPERDASHES respectively), and the mechanic I lean on too hard is stance changing (gnar, jayce, nidalee, jinx). That said, stance changes should feel more meaningful, if it were up to me. You'll see it here! Ability names are placeholders.
Biggest problem against Pantheon IMO is that he feels like a stats check - you can't dodge really any of his kit; you either survive or you don't. My biggest issue AS Panth is that abilities don't FEEL like they have impact - decision trees are pretty simple and lategame is a heck of a stuggle, and teamfighting is HARD. The kit described here is a treatment both of these, under a common theme: playing a 'Spartan' should make you FEEL like a Spartan. A lot of this is going to be inspired by stuff like 300 :P
One last word before we jump in: 'Spartan' is probably not the best term here. The real word I'm looking for is 'Hoplite' (google it!). Hoplite soldiers fought primarily with a spear and shield, but often relied on a sword as a backup weapon
Passive: Resolve -After a slow expires off Pantheon, he gains a brief burst of movespeed (this includes self-slows(!))
Q: Shield Bash - You know that scene where the spartans push forward with their shields and then stab? -Has the same rhythm as the slash/strike as seen on xin/rengar -Panth bashes with his shield, then strikes with his current weapon. Shield is on extremely close range, but stuns in a cone in front of him. -Panth's followup strike extends much further if Pantheon has his spear equipped. -Used for poking (with spear) or combos
W: Shield wall - What's the point of that massive shield if you don't get to use it as one?
- Changes between a defensive and offensive stance
- Defensive stance holds shield out in front of Panth and self-slows; also makes turning slow (think sion ult control)
- Enemy attacks striking from the direction in which the shield is facing deal reduced damage, especially ranged
- Offensive stance returns movement to normal (triggers passive!)
E: Throw Spear/Rend - Cross your fingers, this is it
- Panthon hurls his spear, doing a shit ton of damage
- Lands on the ground if it misses
- Passes partially though enemies but stays lodged on hit (think Kalista)
- Snares if the spear goes through champ + wall
- Panth draws his sword, because he does NOT regenerate spears until going back to base, otherwise he must recover the spear
- Recover the spear by moving to it and pressing E again
- Removing the spear from an enemy does additional 'Rend' damage
R: Grand Skyfall
- I don't think this can be changed without damaging Panth's identity
TL;DR:
Throw Panth's spear for massive damage, but make it count, cause your backup weapon isn't as great for trading/poking. Make playing a Hoplite FEEL like a Hoplite.
