Stuck in bronze/silver? Let's fix it!

I'm a plat player with, imo, good grasp on the game mechanics. I also have tutored through high school and college and thought, hey, why not combine them? Add me in game, let's duo, and chat! As day9 says, this should be where we learn to be a better gamer. Remember that I can't duo ranked with you, as difference in leagues disallows my duo-ing with silver/bronze.

Because I'm kind of one-one-one ing with people, I'll post what came out of them here (organization to follow when the list gets too big!). If you don't want me to include your summoner name, let me know and I'll edit.

  1. Reminder - All you need is a positive winrate, not 100% winrate. If you're winning 51% of your games, you'll be on your way up. Don't get disheartened if you lose a few in a row.

  2. Syruess Cole - Start Winning it in Champ Select. As a preface, the game is not won or lost in champ select. That said, in some, though not all cases, a 'trapped' BV player will have great mechanics. This was the case for Syruess Cole. Between farming, map awareness, poking, warding, and teamfight placement, he was able to take a less-than-meta pick (Brand) with a slightly unusual build and excel. Outside of maybe cleaning up his build a little bit, the only major feedback I could give was this: play a champ that's going to win the game for more than just you. Brand, for instance, even when winning the lane, finds it difficult to press the advantage. He can't really roam, has no mobility, and requires great teamwork and/or a solid wombo to come into his own in teamfights. Instead, focus on learning/practicing champs that can use this advantage. If your mechanics are far and away better than your opponent in lane, you will certainly win no matter the matchup; it's what you do with it that's important. If this means take Katarina and roam bot for more kills or play Ziggs and keep a whole lotta pressure going all the time, so be it!

A few champs tread the line between accessibility and carry potential, so here are some suggestions

  • JarvanIV Khazix Vi all bring great things to the table. Kha damage, J4 cc, and Vi's target elimination are all really strong right now

  • Akali Fizz Syndra Talon Okay fine maybe syndra isn't easy, but each of these champs has the ability to, when ahead, make it very difficult for opponents to recover

The reason I point out mid/jungle in particular are the roles' ability to affect ALL players during early-mid game, rather than just you or, in the support's case, your adc. Does this mean try going for mid/jungle? By all means! Does this mean being last pick and locking mid even though someone else called it? I hope you get reported!

TL;DR: Take a dominant champ with ability to influence other lanes. If you are as good as you think you are, this will put EVERYONE ahead

**LAST NOTE: THIS IS A GREAT THREAD TO FIND LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE. TRY DUOING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS IN YOUR SITUATION. IN MY OPINION 3 RANDOS AND 2 GOODKIDS WILL BEAT 5 RANDOS THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME, AND THAT'S ALL YOU NEED TO CLIMB: A MAJORITY. **

I've got a quick question that, if answered, could probably help me climb.

How do you balance playing League with friends and playing solo ranked?

My wife seems to get extremely frustrated when we duo-queue together, and it's not uncommon for me to have 3-4 friends on at a time, but seldom 5. These are all friends I have in real life, not "friends" from random games.

I'm Gold 5, pretty fond on the game, I play ADC a lot and I just need to know when is the correct time to farm or to group with the team outside of lane phase? I see people in high elo getting consistent farm throughout the game, I can get the 70 or so farm at 10 minutes (unless I am getting loads of kills) but after lane phase it goes wayyyy too far off the "70 CS per 10 minutes."

you should strive for around 100 in 12 mins, after that 200 in 20 is great

Hey you'd duo with any role? I can't seem to carry from the jungle but I'm not playing those champs you mentioned. I got fucked with nerfs towards the end of the season.

This exactly.

I finished in diamond this season. Which is a step up from the Gold, Platinum and Platinum of the first three seasons. I didn't do it by getting frustrated when I wasn't winning 70% of my games. I did it by knowing that I just needed to win more often than I lost over the long haul.
My win% this season? Just under 53%. That's not a very sexy win rate too look at. It means that when I played 100 games I would win 53 times and lose 47 times. that sounds like a lot of losses, but it was still good enough for diamond this time around.

But I would take that quote a step further though and say that 4 random players and 1 good player, will win more than 50% of the time against 5 random players. On my team there are 4 chances I'll get someone bad. On my opponents team there are 5 chances they will get someone bad. That makes it my job to exploit their bad players (of which there is a 25% greater chance of their to be) before their good players exploit the bad players on my team. As long as YOU aren't the one playing bad game in and game out, you should always find more bad players on your opponents team.

Hey there, fairly new player here but I'm a veteran gamer and I picked up League pretty quickly. I fooled around for a while in unranked focusing on buying T3 runes and a few select champions I thought I'd like. Finally managed to get into ranked games after about 3 months at lvl 30. I was placed in Silver 4 but was quickly brought down to Silver 5, and now I have 0 points in Silver 5. I definitely feel like I play better than my team most of the time. I can play every role except mid lane because I don't have any ideal champions for ranked games. I also know there are things I could be doing better as I tend to play on the safer side of things usually. I normally don't press the issue when it comes to trades unless I know for a fact I'll win it 90% of the time. I'm perfectly content just CSing, pushing the lane, and winning that way. I carry pretty well in unranked games for w/e that's worth, but I'd like to be able to carry in ranked more consistently.

Every point you make is invalid after you say "syndra isn't easy."

Be sure to mention that losses are normal. You will progress as long as you keep a steady above 50% winrate. Do not get frustrated after a loss or two or three. There will be a compensating win streak in the near future as long as you stay positive and do what you can to win games. Remember, the only variable you have control over is your own skill, which is what will offset the average 50% winrate. Tell yourself that every game, because it seems to me that everyone thinks they receive the worst luck in terms of matchmaking. So what if you got unlucky one time? There is most definitely a "lucky" game waiting around the corner, which will even the playing field. Of course, statistics don't work with a low number of games played, you need to play many games for these statistics to take noticeable effect. Be the reason your team wins even just by a little, and over time you'll see the progress. And if that doesn't convince you, I made diamond with that mindset. Take it from me, math has never failed me.

On that note, feel free to add me in game if you want any of my advice. Also, since minions spawn at 1:30 and reach lane around 1:55, use that as the base of the "10 min, 100 cs" rule. I mean that will only ever happen under the most optimal conditions (like an afk opponent xD), but 80-90 every 10 min is very doable. Keep this up until at least 30 min and you should be fine afterwards with just teamfight gold even if you aren't max build yet.
