So I'm pretty close to reaching Gold and I saw that the skin reward was for Kalista. I don't own Kalista...so does that I mean I should buy her first? Or will the skin be gifted along with the champion???

Championship Kalista isn't a reward skin. Reward skins are called Victorious.
Championship Kalista won't be the Ranked reward skin, it will be sold, just as Thresh's.
The rewards are named "Victorious" and this year's hasn't been revealed yet, but if I remember correctly, yes, the Champion will be given to you if you don't own them.
It's not for Kalista though, they haven't announced which champion it's for yet.
No, you get the champion free if you are in gold.
