Roldan, the Rogue Crusader
Hey guys, I thought up this champion concept and thought it would be a really cool and unique thing to add to the game. You can read about his kit and what makes it unique down below! I was thinking about champions and thought it would be cool to add a real knight to the champion pool, with full on crusades medieval armor chanmail, etc. Give it a look and tell me what you think!
Lore
Far to the southwest of Runeterra, there is a continent of warring kingdoms, battling over land and resources since the land was first settled. The Lightwardens are one such faction, who control a domain of heavy religious persecution, where inhabitants are brought up their whole lives to serve the state and their one true god. Roldan was a knight commander of the Lightwarden forward company, a handpicked group of the strongest warriors and priests in the army who would dive into the enemy lines before a battle even began, destroying their enemy's equipment and infantry. Roldan, an extremely religious man, has been in countless crusades and campaigns, and has butchered thousands in service of his god.
On one crusade, his army was tasked with sacking a mountain temple of false idols. As his company tore through the enemy frontline, Roldan beat his way through the mountain pass to the temple. He broke down the door and found an old woman sitting in the room surrounded by warriors. As he cut them down, he couldn't help but notice the way the woman watched him, almost as if she was judging him. When they were alone, he asked what she was doing there. She said that everything he was told to believe was a lie. She took a large, beautiful sword from a chest, and told him to take it. As he did, his mind was opened, filling his thoughts with visions of the past, present, and future. He saw kingdoms rise and fall, and watched in horror as he saw how the world would end. In that moment, a voice spoke out to him, asking him to serve her in this time of war. Most of the visions he could barely comprehend, but one thing he saw clearly. His god was not real. The court his order served had fashioned it as a way to build morale for their armies, making them feel as if they were serving a higher cause. The woman told him that the blade was indeed holy, the blade of a god long forgotten to the world. Before he could ask more, his crusaders came in and slaughtered the woman in cold blood.
Sickened at the slaughter of an unarmed woman and infuriated by this betrayal, knowing that all those he killed and conquered had been for a lie, he went back to the court and publicly accused them of the fraud. However, no one believed him, and the court ordered the guards to kill him on the spot. He drew the sword that the woman had given him, and instantly felt empowered in a way he's never felt. He slew the guards with ease, not even getting struck once. Enraged, he ran over to kill the court, but his own company stood in his way. Not wanting to harm his friends for being deceived, he ran from the castle, dispatching of anyone who tried to stop him.
Exiled from his kingdom, and infamous for hundreds of counts of murder in the rest of the city-states of his realm, Roldan sailed north to Runeterra, in search of whatever journey he is fated to go on. He now wanders the land as a lone knight, hunted down by his old company for treason and heresy. He goes from town to town, never staying too long in one place, and lending his holy sword to those who need it along the way, while hoping to find answers about the mysterious goddess whom he now fights for.
Appearance Roldan is clad from head to toe in the shining armor of a Lightwarden knight, red armor with golden chain mail. He is a large man, maybe about Tryndamere's size. His chest plate has the symbol of the Lightwardens on it, but it is very clearly struck through with a slash. He wears a medieval knights cylinder helmet, with the face exposed but the helmet covering his nose. Cleanshaven. His sword is a great sword similar to the one Garen uses, but more realistic looking. It glows with a faint red and yellow aura. His shield is red, but visibly beaten up from his many campaigns.
Kit
Roldan's kit would stand out due to his holy sword being not attached to his character permanently.
Passive: 2 PASSIVES:
Battle Aptitude: While in possession of his sword, every fourth basic attack deals percent health bonus magic damage. While without it, every basic attack adds a stack of armor because his main weapon is his shield, to a cap. Stacks fall off after being out of combat for 7 seconds. If Roldan picks up his sword while stacks are active, they will remain active until he is out of combat for 7 seconds.
Champion's Blade: Roldan's sword is not tethered to his person, and upon throwing it, will stick it in the dirt at a target location. While without possession of his sword, Roldan gains a new set of abilities, has increased movement and attack speed, but lower damage. The sword will NOT return to Roldan after a time period, he will have to manually pick it up. If he walks too far away from it it will teleport to his hand, but the distance is so far that if you left it in the middle of a fight to go pick it up you would get back too late.
Q(with sword): Divine Assault: Roldan swings his sword three times (similar to riven Q) in three activations. On the third activation, he slams his sword overhead, Bringing it down on the ground in front of him (illaoi Q) stunning all enemies and applying a short burn.
Q(without sword): Divine Intervention: The sword bursts into flames and levitates at its location, causing a burn effect and healing aura around it. If Roldan picks up the sword before the duration ends, the aura will transer to him until it's over.
W(with sword): Line in the sand: Draws a line in the dirt with his sword, taunting all enemies in a small aoe in front of him.
W(without sword): Shield Bash: Roldan crashes his shield into the targets chest, knocking them back. If Roldan has at least half of his shield stacks, his next auto attack will crit. If he has all of his shield stacks, he will knock them back, deal 150% damage, and briefly stun, but will not empower his next attack. Shield stacks will be lost upon use.
E(with sword): Hurl: Hurls his sword in a skill shot line in front of him (like Olaf Q) with it sticking in the ground at the target location
E(without sword): Tackle: Skillshot tackle, if he collides with an enemy he will knock them both to the ground for a brief moment, stunning Roldan for .5 seconds and the enemy for 1.5 seconds. If he uses this ability to pick up his sword, he will finish the skillshot with a powerful cone aoe slash, knocking enemies back.
Ultimate: Champion of the Ancient God (can only be used in possession of sword): Roldan's sword infuses him with the power of the goddess, causing him to grow in size and take on a form of glowing yellow energy. His sword also grows very large. During this time he deals bonus damage, has a larger attack radius, increased defenses, and applies a heal/burn around him for a percentage of his max health. At the beginning of the activation, all enemies in range are blinded, and take initial magic damage.
I think it'd be pretty cool to have a champion who can be separated from his weapon like this, and it can actually effect how he auto attacks and fights. His kit really makes things interesting, making you think whether or not to keep the sword on you or not. He has obviously a stronger damage output when it's in his possession, but he has access to powerful cc, escape, and healing/burn auras, in addition to a stacking armor buff and movement increase when he is not holding it. I was trying to make it so there is a clear gameplay distinction between when he has the sword or not, and to make it seem realistic. Also, while being a well fought knight, without his sword imbuing him with his power, he is just that. A knight. Amongst monsters. So I wanted his unarmed state to really show that he's weaker like that. There's no way he could 1v1 a Garen without his sword, because without it he's not complete. While serving its purpose to the kit, you wouldn't want to be without your sword very long.
Believe it or not there's actually some pretty decent synergy in his kit with abilities and combos I didn't even think of until I typed it up. For example, in a 1v1 you could throw your sword right behind the enemy champion, activate Divine intervention for the burn, shield bash them backward, then tackle them over your sword to knock them back even FURTHER. And there's all kinds of stuff in this kit that could be used be smarter players like throwing out the sword before a fight to activate the Divine intervention and pick it up, or throwing the sword and using the creep wave to build up your shield stacks then picking the sword back up and staying in combat, there are just things about this champion concept that I really think are awesome and would be really cool to have in the game. What do you guys think? Lmk!
