Axel and Pinwheel, the Bandle City Bandits

RiotRiot Lutzburg·1/1/2015, 11:03:55 PM·39 votes·3,337 views

Role: Marksmen

Inspiration: I wanted to create a "duo" champion where both characters operated a sidecar motorcycle

General Design Philosophy: Axel and Pinwheel are a dynamic comedy duo with a large emphasis on clever voicework, exaggerated animations and a generally over-the-top demeanor. Their abilities are somewhat relaxed and not overly complicated so that their visual fidelity and personalities can take more of the spotlight.

Mechanically these two offer some interesting ability synergy and have modest mobility and crowd control for a Marksman. They rely slightly more on abilities than most Marksmen do, as a large portion of their damage comes from a spammable line nuke. Their Ultimate acts as a massive attack speed steroid which compensates for their otherwise subpar ability and auto attack scaling.

Risk Analysis: High. Axel and Pinwheel are a screwball duo and have a lot of unique and novel mechanics and themes, working both for and against them due to their untested nature.

Appearance: A human named Axel pilots the motorcycle while a yordle named Pinwheel operates the weapons systems from the sidecar. Both characters are male and have heavy Italian mafia influences. They basically look like a cross between this...

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/AxelandPinwheel_zpsaaa696e1.jpg

...and this.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/AxelandPinwheel2_zps92577827.jpg

Lore: Axel and Pinwheel have been thick as thieves their entire lives. They think of each other as brothers and love using humor and pranks to show affection. They are very silly characters with a strong rapport between each other, which should be communicated through powerful VO work.

Strengths: No need to stack attack speed, strong poke in lane, massive attack speed steroid

Weaknesses: no instant gap closers, limited escape tools, skillshot dependent, reliant on perfect timing of Ultimate to deal optimal damage

Plays most like...: Corki KogMaw

Auto Attack: Pinwheel fires a mini gun shot from the sidecar's turret at 600 range.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_7186_pas_zps721e53c3.jpg Passive- Runaway Sidecar: When Axel and Pinwheel are brought to 0 health, the main bike explodes, leaving the sidecar on its own. For the next 5 seconds, the player can control the sidecar, firing Spitfire Missiles with no mana cost and a constant .5 second cooldown (The sidecar is untargetable for the duration and the player only has access to Spitfire Missiles). However, the sidecar is difficult to control and causes the character to wobble, making the skillshots difficult to land. After 5 seconds, the sidecar also explodes, though this deals no damage. Design Philosophy: This is a silly and thematically interesting passive ability that leverages the duo’s whackiness, as well as their inability to operate without their partner in crime. Being able to spam missiles that otherwise require skillful build-up also supplies a burst of fun in the otherwise unfun situation of dying.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_13291_btn_zps5aa5f804.jpg Q- Spitfire Missiles (3 sec (baseline)): Pinwheel fires a line skillshot in the form of a missile from his sidecar's turret, similar to Corki's Ultimate. Each missile fired reduces the spell's cooldown by .5 seconds, but only if the ability strikes a target. The effect is doubled when striking an enemy champion. Missing a missile increases the cooldown of the next by .5 seconds instead. This spell has a minimum 1 second cooldown and is not affected by cooldown reduction. Axel and Pinwheel receive a buff called "Hot Streak" to denote how many consecutive missiles they've landed. This buff lasts 6 seconds before the effect resets, and refreshes the duration for each successful strike. Rank-ups increase damage and lower mana cost. Design Philosophy: Since Axel and Pinwheel don’t have any damage steroids outside of their Ultimate, they instead rely on constant poke damage from this spammable skillshot. The decreasing cooldown on hit promotes skillful aim instead of blindly firing them at anything that moves.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_9797_pas_zps86a42abd.jpg W- Burnin’ Rubber (10 sec): Passive: Pinwheel's Spitfire Missiles become supercharged, dealing 1/1.5/2/2.5/3% of the target's max health in addition to their regular damage. This effect is lost when Burnin' Rubber is on cooldown. Active: A small flame is jetted from the bike's exhaust, increasing Axel and Pinwheel's movement speed by 25/28/32/36/40% for 2.5 seconds. Rank-ups increase damage and movement speed, as well as lower cooldown. Design Philosophy: The max health element of this ability gives Axel and Pinwheel a fighting chance against tanks and bruisers that can rather easily reach them. This also helps the bandits scale into the late game, as this ability will likely be ranked second or third over Spitfire Missiles. This again helps cover their lack of true hyper carry scaling that is traditional with most Marksmen. However, players must choose between fight or flight in these situations, as the damage buff is lost if they choose to flee. This creates an interesting decision point for the player to make every time the enemy top laner tries to dive them in a team fight.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_11930_pas_zps62e76ffd.jpg E- Oil Slick (16 sec): A compartment opens up on the bike, revealing a nozzle which sprays slippery oil on the ground for 2 seconds. Axel and Pinwheel can continue driving while this happens to create trails of oil. These patches slow enemies by 40/45/50/55/60%. If Axel and Pinwheel activate Burnin' Rubber while standing on the oil, the entire slick will burst into flames. The slow component remains and also creates a powerful magic damage over time effect, similar to Corki's Valkyrie or Rumble's Ultimate. Certain fire effects from allied Champions can also trigger the oil slick (including Rumble's Flamespitter and Shyvana's Burnout). This trail lasts 3 seconds. If Burnin' Rubber is already active when Oil Slick is cast, the fire effect takes place immediately. Rank-ups increase slow amount and damage of the flames, as well as reduce cooldown. Design Philosophy: This is a mild disengagement tool against assassins or bruisers, though it’s not nearly as effective as most other Marksmen escape tools; especially against divers with instant gap closers. Instead, this ability offers a very fun synergy between Burnin’ Rubber, allowing players to damage their aggressor while simultaneously slowing them and hasting themselves. As a general purpose utility ability with several advantageous components, its cooldown is relatively long.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_12154_pas_zps508faf94.jpg R- Take the Wheel! (55 sec): Pinwheel takes the wheel while Axel pulls out a pair of tommy guns. For the next 3/4/5 seconds, Axel gains massive bonus attack speed and applies a stacking armor shred of 5/7.5/10 armor with each attack. Spitfire Missiles are disabled for the duration, as Pinwheel must steer the motorcycle. Sample Dialogue: "Take over!" "Take the wheel!" "Cover me!" "Take over, Pinhead!" Rank-ups increase the duration of the effect and the armor shred, as well as lower cooldown. Design Philosophy: There is a lot of strategy regarding the best time to use this ultimate. Typically players will attempt to stack as many Spitfire Missiles into their targets as possible. Once they start missing and the CDR effect is no longer viable, Axel and Pinwheel can fall back on good old fashioned machine gun violence. Thematically the inability to fire Spitfire Missiles makes sense, given that Pinwheel is driving the bike for the duration of the ability. The insane attack speed steroid of this ability provides an emotional high moment for players on both teams, and is the primary reason why other scaling tools are nowhere to be found on Axel and Pinwheel’s kit.

Hey, I remember this one. This was a fun concept.

Alright, it looks like in its current form, the forums will let you paste a hyperlink of your own attachments somewhere in your thread by dragging the attachment image at the bottom directly into the "edit thread" area. However, it's just a link to the image, which is already at the bottom of the page, so it's pretty much useless. >_>

I love the commical aspect of this duo. I would very much enjoy playing them.

I know you can make images appear at certain points since I've seen other people do it, but I don't know exactly how it's done.

Oh my gosh Lutzburg! It makes me so happy seeing you on the forums again! Or maybe I just haven’t seen you. Let’s get down to business!

I commend you on making another awesome ADC! In my opinion they’re the hardest to design. I love the theme of this (these) champion(s), the silliness would definitely make me want to play this champ.

Passive (Runaway Sidecar): At first I was skeptical of another DEATH passive. Most Kog’Maw and Zyra players feel like they’re not rewarded with a death. However, the more I look at this passive, the more I like it. I think what separates this passive from the “unsatisfying “ones of Kog and Zyra is that you can still have a tremendous impact on the teamfight. Much like with Sion’s passive, except this one is even more threatening since you’re less likely to be kited (worst thing in the world as Sion is to die, then do nothing while you chase hopelessly).

Here’s my question: Is the cooldown of the spitfire missiles still increased when you miss? Can you still use items in this mode? Are you targetable? It doesn’t mention whether you can auto-attack still, I’m assuming you’re no longer allowed that feature?

Overall, great job on the passive!

Q (Spitfire Missles): Now this is such a great ability! Having the hot streak incentive is so awesome! I can’t believe how fun this champ would be on SR. Do the rockets deal physical damage or are the like Corki’s missiles and do magic? Freaking amazing job on this one!

W (Burnin’ Rubber): I imagine the car vehicle going on just its back wheels for this move due to the immense momentum. I like it a lot, gives them mobility and an escape. I like how you make the passive apply only when it’s off cooldown. You say that missiles are affected…you mean the Q right? Right now I imagine this character a lot like Corki, and his autos look kind of like missiles as well. Is it his autos or his Q that is enhanced? Or both? Also, what kind of damage does it apply (I’d guess magic). Could you make it a DoT, since it’s fire?

E (Oil Slick): Not quite as cool as the other abilities, but necessary isuppose. Good interaction between his W and E. Good job. I wish it wasn’t so much like Corki and Rumble, but I can’t think of anything to make it more unique.

R (TAKE THE WHEEL!): I can see this guy being a huge tank shredder a la Kog’Maw with this ability and his W passive. Balance-wise, I’m not quite sure, I’d have to see how this would look in-game. If it’s too powerful, you could always make it cap so it can’t reduce past half of their max armor or something like that.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this champ. I just love his Q so much! It’d be cool if you made Q scale off AP as well just in case people wanted to go AP mid lane. This guy definitely takes after Corki, I hope he’s still unique enough. I feel like I didn't really give anything to think about.

And as always, good job! I’d love to talk more about him if you had other ideas to make him less like Corki!

Nice concept, wondering if oil slick should be able to be proc from other champions with flames, such as annie, brand, rumble, and ziggs. Would provide a stonger incentive for team play, team fights, coordinated picking, synergy, and general team work, something the community needs. Fun champ, love the idea tho i am curious as to the idea of Italian mafia, i understand the tommy gun aspect but this cart idea is straight out of WWII from the Germans armed motorcycle the Zündapp. Now it would be comical to have them as Italians as allies of the Germans could have very easily gotten them however i think that German accent and comedy goes better. Think Charlie Chaplin! Just a thought!

The Swede1/2/2015, 8:14:09 AM3 votes

It would be awesome if they were constantly babbling and/or arguing with one another whenever they were moving or attacking. It would be so funny with their accents.

Just the thought of a Wallace and Grommet duo like this makes me laugh.

I figure it might be a good idea to bring back one of the crowd favorites. :)

RiotRiot Lutzburg3/10/2015, 3:54:53 AM1 votes

Ah, Axel and Pinwheel... the first concept I ever uploaded to these forums. They have served me well. :)

RiotRiot Lutzburg3/17/2015, 6:00:04 PM1 votes

Pretty sure Axel and Pinwheel are my most upvoted concept so far. Maybe that's just because they're also the oldest.

These two partners in crime could use a little speed boost to the front page!

Anyone ever notice that Axel and Pinwheel's role is listed as "Marksmen"; plural? Heh, heh, heh.

I'm bringing some of my most-upvoted concepts back to the front page today, to see if a new audience still finds them compelling after so much time has passed.

PickleBabah1/2/2015, 3:15:42 AM1 votes

Hi Lutzburg! Ooh, boy, I remember reviewing this on the old forums, heh. Well, I was reading this and I was thinking that a christmas / new year's themed skin would naturally fit with their mischievous and jolly nature. Well, uh, I'll be seeing you around sometime I guess :D GG 2014

RiotRiot Lutzburg1/2/2015, 3:30:43 AM1 votes

Hi Pickle, great seeing you again! Yes, I do declare a "Tipsy Elves" or "Reindeer" skin would be a lovely fit for these two. Hope to see you around more often now that I'M BACK, BABY!

Ember- thanks for the tip!

Patton- The fire-proccing idea is a really neat one. I just might have to borrow it! I see what you mean with the German vs. Italian influences.

4nth0l0gy1/2/2015, 6:22:51 AM1 votes

So here's something I'd be curious about: based on their w and e, when the duo are fleeing, Pinwheel should be able to fire while moving away (or towards, I suppose) from a target, without slowing down. In other words, the first entirely mobile champion while autoattacking. Would that be something you'd want in their kit, OP? If so, I'd want to see how that could be implemented control-wise.

MidEvilKnight3k1/2/2015, 12:25:14 PM1 votes

It's a cool concept, it could definitely work. However I did notice something that could be abused.

Remember Hecarim in URF mode? His has a similar effect of reducing the cooldown when you hit champions. In urf mode with 80% CDR it would reduce the cooldown more than the cooldown itself. So you had hecarim just going helicopter on people instantly killing them.

The Q on your champ would only need 33.3% CDR to get to instant cast at full stacks. Riot would have to make the abilities cooldown actually change instead of just reducing it by 2 seconds to avoid the abuse case. I bet they could do it though.

gameipedia1/2/2015, 4:03:19 PM1 votes

I like this one, though now that I know you have ones that you didn't upload to old forums I really want to see those. :D Riot should hire/take some of your ideas for their champions, seriously.

Rito Jericho1/2/2015, 10:51:25 PM1 votes

Holy crap, dude! This champ idea just seems like TOO much fun!! I REALLY want to see what manner of wackiness they bring to the Fields of Justice!!!
