Doran, the Master Forger

RiotRiot Lutzburg·3/16/2015, 8:58:05 AM·24 votes·4,503 views

Role: Mixed damage Bruiser, AP Mage, Mixed damage Tank

Inspiration: I wanted to create a champion concept revolving around the enigmatic Doran, who has several items available in the shop that are named after him.

General Design Philosophy: Doran’s basic abilities mimic the stats of each of the Doran items, and his Ultimate helps drive home the ‘master forger’ and weapon smith theme. His kit is as diverse as his items, and he can actually use the Doran items as recipe components for more powerful items, which solidify his role as either a bruiser, mage or tank.

Risk Analysis: Very high. Doran is a very important, albeit enigmatic character in the League universe, and there may already be plans for him. It may also be ultimately better for him to remain a mystery. Theming aside, his kit is incredibly diverse and varied, and includes the integration of existing items as well as the creation of all-new ones. The development cost of Doran is undoubtedly massive, which must always be taken into account; even for a studio like Riot.

Appearance: A burly, muscular man in his 30’s. He has a few tasteful tattoos and scruffy facial hair, and is clearly accustomed to a long life of hard work and intense manual labor. Beneath it, though, is a subtle hint of deep intellect and engineering genius.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/blacksmith_by_r1choman-d3rbcur_zpsxk69rwlp.jpg

Lore: Doran joins the League to test out his own weapons and armor, searching for ways to improve them after seeing them on the Fields of Justice. To get the widest array of experiences, Doran has trained himself to be incredibly adaptive, able to fight as either a bruiser, tank or mage.

Strengths: Incredible versatility, powerful level 1, gold-efficient exclusive item, powerful sustain and AoE, ability to forge items with “best in slot” stats

Weaknesses: No gap closer, short range on abilities, reliant on lifesteal and sustain to trade, weak until acquiring upgraded Doran item

Plays Most Like...: Viktor Jayce Jax

Auto Attack: Doran wields a massive forging hammer in both hands and uses melee attacks. When using abilities, the metal of the hammer rapidly heats and melts, then reforms into another weapon while that ability is active. The weapon then remains in its new form until a different ability is cast. This effect is purely visual and does not alter Doran’s auto attacks.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_15936_pas_zpsqbh3eabi.jpg Passive- Master Forger: Doran possesses the ability to upgrade Doran’s Blade, Shield or Ring. These upgraded items provide augmented effects for each of Doran’s basic abilities. However, only one Doran item can be upgraded at a time.

Doran Item Upgrades:

item 1055 -> http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_9208_btn_zps5kjfniii.jpg Doran's Saber: 200 health, 90 AD, 15% lifesteal Passive- Siphoning Slash (Q) gains increased damage and an armor shred effect Builds From- item 1055 item 1038 item 1053 +400g Total Cost- 3,190 Gold

item 1054 -> http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_15355_pas_zpsmgd4ohqo.jpg Doran's Bulwark: 900 Health, 60 armor, 15hp5 Passive- Force of Will (W) gains bonus healing and armor, and retroactively grants improved health gains from its passive component Builds From- item 1054 item 1011 item 1031 item 3801 +400g Total Cost- 3,190 Gold

item 1056 -> http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_5523_btn_zpssnqjyibi.jpg Doran's Crown: 200 health, 130AP, 10% CDR, 12mp5 Passive- Ring of Fire (E) gains a reduced mana cost and the ability to be cast twice in rapid succession before going on cooldown Builds From- item 1056 item 3108 item 1058 +400g Total Cost- 3,220 Gold

Design Philosophy: Doran’s kit revolves around the three items that bear his name, and this component was key in creating his abilities and mechanics. I am definitely not an expert in allocating in-game stats relative to gold cost, so please be forgiving when reviewing these items, build paths and costs.

The important thing to note here is that Doran should have access to one of these items, whose primary stat is the highest available across all other items (90 AD versus 80 AD from Infinity Edge, 900 health versus 800 health from Warmogs Armor, and 130 AP versus 120 AP from Rabadon’s Deathcap, respectively). This reinforces Doran’s role as the Master Forger.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_8476_pas_zpskgugjoxv.jpg Q- Siphoning Slash (6 seconds): Doran morphs his hammer into a sword and performs a cone-shaped cleave attack, dealing physical damage (+70% AD, +50% AP) and healing himself for 10% of the damage done (capped vs monsters). The healing effect is doubled against champions. Doran's Blade Bonus: increases damage of cleave by 15%. Doran's Saber Bonus: increases damage of cleave by 30% and causes the ability to shred 10% of affected targets’ armor for 3 seconds. Rank-ups increase damage and lower cooldown. Design Philosophy: This is Doran’s ‘blade’ ability, and his primary physical damage source, as well as his source of sustain. It should be leveled first for players who wish to act as an AD fighter.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_6599_btn_zpsjidop3ij.jpg W- Force of Will (14 seconds): Passive: Doran permanently gains 10 health for every 500 damage he suffers, up to a cap of 800 health. Active: Doran’s hammer spreads shield-like wings and he assumes a defensive stance, increasing his armor by 20/35/50/65/80 and granting him a heal over time equal to 6/7.5/9/10.5/12% (+2% per 100 AP) of his max health over 3 seconds. Doran's Shield Bonus: increases armor and heal value by 15%. Doran's Bulwark Bonus: increases armor and heal value by 25% and retroactively causes Doran to gain 25 health for every 500 damage he suffers. Rank-ups increase armor and heal percentage, as well as lower cooldown. Design Philosophy: The passive component of this ability rewards players who manage to soak up a lot of damage over the course of an entire game. It functions similarly to Vladamir or Singed’s Passive in this respect. It’s also ideal for junglers, who typically tank a lot of damage while clearing camps. The active component mimics Doran’s Shield, increasing armor and applying dramatically increased health regeneration over time. Players wishing to act as a tank or jungler should max this first.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_595_btn_zpscn8socx7.jpg E- Ring of Fire (9 seconds): Doran’s hammer morphs into a staff as he summons a ring of fire at a target location, dealing magic damage (+80% AP) and slowing the target by 30%. If an enemy is caught in the center of the ring, they are stunned for 1.5 seconds. Doran's Ring Bonus: reduces ability mana cost by 25%. Doran's Crown Bonus: Reduces ability mana cost by 40% and allows the ability to be cast a second time before going on cooldown. The same target cannot be stunned twice in a row from the second cast. Rank-ups increase damage and reduce cooldown. Design Philosophy: This is Doran’s ‘ring’ inspired ability, which conveniently makes an actual ring on the ground. It also acts as his primary chasing tool. Players who wish to play as a mage should level this first. The ability functions similarly to Leona’s Ultimate, though is much smaller in range and size.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag47/Lutzburg/icons_17533_pas_zpsedgbf7js.jpg R- Hammerfall (55 seconds): Doran super-heats his forging hammer and wields it in both hands, causing his basic attacks for the next 12 seconds to deal bonus physical damage (+30% AD). In addition, the point of impact for each auto attack leaves a super-heated aura in its wake that lasts for 6 seconds, which deals magic damage (+30% AP) over time to enemies who stand in it. Auras can physically stack on each other but enemies can only be damaged by one aura at a time. During this time, Doran can still use his other abilities, but his hammer retains its original form. Sample Dialogue- "Drop the hammer!" Rank-ups increase damage done and lower cooldown. Design Philosophy: This is the culmination of Doran’s identity as the ‘master forger.’ It allows him to wield his forging hammer like a true badass and also allows him to deal consistent, continual mixed damage, which should be beneficial to him regardless of his build.

What about Rabadons the master of death? item 3089

I love this, I've always hated that the Doran's Items are just there when you buy them, no upgrades. This is exceptional, love it. 2 thumbs up (4 if I can do it with my toes :P)

You know I have always wondered if they would let us know who Doran is/was! It would be awesome as a champion especially the way you set it up! I really like the whole doran starting item and being able to upgrade!

Speaking to The5lacker, there are actually a few champs out that are purposely kind complicated to play, and it better that way because it promotes high skill, and game diversity. There are also a few champs with mixed type abilities that do not all fit within their champion type position, but it does fit their theme, such as Shyvana, Taric, Braum. But one of the guys i definitely want you to look at is Nautilus, he has a ranged ability, an AOE ability, and a melee passive, so there are quite a lot of champs with kits of widely varying abilities. (Also Nidalee, freakin everything in her kit and she switches, so complicated: Javalin Toss=ranged, Pounce and Swipe=melee, Swipe does AoE damage)

that aside... love dis guy, i think it would be cool to have a jack of all trades kind of guy in league. Except he's more of a master of all trades, kinda like how Lutz is a master of champion concept

RiotRiot Lutzburg3/16/2015, 6:52:54 PM2 votes

To the comments about Doran as he relates to the lore- I think it's a bit obscure to reference a Justice Journal entry from four years ago, given how much the game has changed since then. Riot has specifically said that the game's lore is in a massive state of flux and likely won't even include the idea of "summoners" anymore. As another example, look at things like the Freljord reimagining and poor, poor Trundle. Things can and do get retconned all the time and let's be honest, Doran getting kicked in the head and becoming mentally handicapped is hardly an epic or satisfying character arc for one of the more infamous characters in League's yet-to-be-told story.

Regardless of any of that, concepts can and should sometimes take creative liberties. A reimagined Doran that isn't "soft in the head" is a fine theme to explore.

I really like this idea Rito make it happen.

Wowza, I can't really think of anything to address here other than say this is such a fun concept :) I really like this a lot. I especially love the passive.

Rito Jericho3/30/2015, 6:57:42 PM1 votes

I think it would be cool to have a champ meant to give the Doran's items a little more love. I mean, at the moment, they're nothing more than STARTING items.

RiotRiot Lutzburg4/10/2015, 6:38:54 PM1 votes

I was listening to some Duran Duran today. It would be sweet to take one of their music videos as inspiration for Doran's dance.

RiotRiot Lutzburg4/12/2015, 7:49:26 AM1 votes

Here's to a new Doran! No soft-in-the-head dimwittedness for you in my book!

Earthlord Jazz5/26/2015, 8:02:01 AM1 votes

Wow, I think this is my favorite Doran concept yet. Before I get into the abilities, I like to say that you did a great job implementing him as a jack-of-all-trades champion. I've always liked champions with a variety of build paths. Doran looks like a character I'd love to play on the rift.

Passive (Master Forger): Makes sense for him. My friend and i were just saying a couple of days ago that a Doran character should definitely be able to upgrade his basic items into something special. One thing that would be nice to have is showing the gold efficiency of these items right next to them, to give the reader an idea on how good it is. I love how you add flavor to the items by coupling them to the abilities. Simply splendid. Just to clarify, by only upgrading one at a time you mean that at max I can only have 1 saber or 1 bulwark or 1 crown right? Just a suggestion (I feel like I'm pushing the envelope on making his passive to intricate but whatever) could you make it so the items all cost the same and he can, say at level 11, exchange them for free at the shop for another one of his upgraded items? That would give him a lot of versatility during the middle of the game. It could actually show him forging a different item in the fountain...I dunno think about it.

Q (Siphoning Slash): Sounds fine to me. I like the AP scaling as well. The upgrades seem very well thought out. By cone-shaped cleave attack, similar AoE as Diana passive or longer than that?

W (Force of Will): I really like the passive and the active. The bonus effects seem good as well.

E (Ring of Fire): So similar to Xerath W but probably with less range? I feel like I'm repeating myself, but nice job on the effects. I'd probably lower the scaling a bit.

R (Hammerfall): I like the dual scaling. Darn it, I have nothing to say again. The after effect of each attack is really cool.

Concerns: My primary concern is that Doran has absolutely no gap closer. As a fighter or tank, you really do need a gap closer to be effective. If you feel like he needs one, I'd probably tie it in with his ultimate, just so he doesn't have it all the time. He seems very strong otherwise and I wouldn't want him to be too overbearing. If he has a recommended items thing, I'd recommend that his AD and AP variations have some bulk just cause he doesn't have very much range nor escapes.

RiotRiot Lutzburg6/8/2015, 12:45:52 AM1 votes

Oh, and even though he has no gap closer, he does have a way of slowing and ultimately reaching opponents from range via his E. Its ratios are high because it's really his only true AP "mage" ability.

Lorinne6/24/2015, 12:21:53 AM1 votes

For some reason... I always imagined Doran as a youngish boy/man. Like, the age of apprentice but just having a natural genius for crafting armor and weapons.

RiotRiot Lutzburg7/14/2015, 6:27:19 PM1 votes

I'm bringing some of my most-upvoted concepts back to the front page today, to see if a new audience still finds them compelling after so much time has passed.

Swollwonder7/15/2015, 4:47:32 AM1 votes

I feel like riot wouldnt do this because one there are items in the shop after him (this would mean every other item could have a champ eg rylai Liandry etc) and because of his past lore. It feels like a helmet bro scenario.

AChanceOfReign3/16/2015, 3:03:00 PM1 votes

Hey Lutzburg, small time no see eh? Anyway I've read that Doran wasn't himself after an incident which made him less intelligent in his crafts. In his results of what happen he only made the Blade, the Ring and the Shield and disappeared, I think. So you could make him an apprentice of Doran or make him the student of Doran but he become almost as powerful as Doran something, but hey this is you shiz, so just ignore this is you don't care :)

The5lacker3/16/2015, 4:38:55 PM1 votes

See, as much as I love the concept...

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Doran

The kick had rendered his mind soft, but it hadn’t robbed him of his passion. He still wanted nothing other than to craft, but where once he may have created singular masterpieces, he now crafted…somewhat simpler items, and many of them. He is a kind, goofy, good-hearted soul, and he takes pride in the work he does.

I see neither kind and goofy nor "kicked in the head" in your kit. The idea of converting the Doran's items into a more usable for is entertaining, don't get me wrong, but he doesn't really work with the lore and, again, lots of needless complexity.

I see you have claim to 70 concepts. That may sound impressive, but unless you've been doing champion concepts ever since the game came out, I think you may have a bit of a "quantity over quality" problem. You aren't stopping to think through things. I think it'd be best for you to take a break and review all of the champions released to date in order or release, with reworks being placed on the relative timeline. Look at how things have developed over the years and consider why things are the way they are. Consider why no champion has bonus health based on the damage they take. Consider why no champion has one ADC ability, one tank ability, and one mage ability. Don't just try and think up things that don't exist: Think up why they might not exist. Because if the only reason you can come up with is "Nobody at Riot has thought it up yet," I hate to break it to you but Riot's been doing this for five years no. I'd wager most anything you can think up they've had come up in brainstorming.

Soft head aside, I still believe Doran has a lot of potential as a concept, regardless of whether or not mine is the direction to take him in.
