Because it's to prevent you from being discouraged when you see a guy on the enemy team with Level 7 Yasuo and a diamond border while you're some gold player without a mastery.
He isn't asking for the border. Just the flag. He can show you the mastery via emote in-game anyway. To find his rank, you'd have to research on your own. Game encourages you to share the mastery via the emote.
Problem is that unless it's rank 6 or 7, mastery emotes are useless because anyone can get level 5 either in 50 wins or 500 losses.
If it's the earlier case, then he can use them if he wants to. I don't show the enemy my mastery because I don't think I should discourage them from trying to defeat me.
That only supports that it's no reason to discourage and so no reason to hide it. It may only show you the player is devoted to the champ and should know at least how to use it properly even if they are bad at any other aspect of the game (farming, poking, defing, roaming...)
Its best purpose may be comedic to show it If you mess up, so I agree this is not big deal, the point still remains that hiding it in loading screen is rather unlogical since it's not that big secret in-game anyway.
You can also see the mastery every time the player gets a kill or assist if the player is level 4 or higher. It's almost unnoticable, but if you look under the kill banner for the killing champion, you can see a brown banner for level 4 and a red banner for level five. I'm guessing there's a purple one for level 6 and a blue one for level 7.
I think this also happens when a mastery player dies.
I forgot for that. Yops that too.
Got level 7 recently. It does have a large blue ribbon underneath, but also has to wings on either side of your portrait.
Oh yeah, there are wings too. I forgot about the wings.

7th mastery border is actually very noticable
Where you see discourage, I see a challenge.
Same thing when I'm Teemo and I see an oponent that might beat me
or any odd top laners.
If its a diamond player with the highest possible mastery of a champion, you are getting fucked either way if they decide to try hard. Personally not knowing isn't going to make it any better if I get killed every time I go to lane.
This is always been a lame excuse, just show people who they are up against.
Well, those players shouldn't be playing each other in the first place. Maybe if Riot put more effort into their matchmaking and less into covering their asses, we wouldn't run into this problem at all.
How do you know if it's not some diamond playing with his under ranked friends for fun? And matchmaking just put him against weaker ones because his team is made of lower ranks?
That's the common issue with matchmaking, which is premades.
While I would like this, there is some toxic behavior that can rise up as a result.
Such as people purposely camping you for being a level 7 mastery, then going on in all chat how you are bad and need to uninstall.
While that's not the best example, it's kinda what I see happening already whenever I take a gold rank friend to play normals with. He gets camped and the enemy goes on and on about how he must have been boosted or probably bought the account.
I still like the idea though.
You should play better. You'll only get 0 If you accept the lowest common denominator.
The thing with LoL is that it is a competitive game. Why play if you're not playing to win?
Too many people would rather whine about toxic players rather than admit they themselves should play better. Toxicity isn't the problem with LoL. Lazy players who refuse to admit they could play better is the problem with the game.
Yeah man, gotta play like LCS in Normals. Better watch out people who want to have fun.
LoL doesn't have to be a competitive game. People play normal games for a reason. And yes, I have to play better (and I try really hard to improve) but I can safely say that toxic players still ruins the game for me 90% of the time. So yeah, toxicity is still the major issue.
No thanks. I would rather not have the "camp me" sticker broadcasted to my enemies before the game even starts.
I really dont see the point of showing it at all
bragging rights breh
Because then your team can at least EXPECT you to be that guy who flashes mastery after every kill.
Is it bad to be that person? Because i'm that person.
I think the reason Rito doesn't want banners and borders to show for enemies is because it would induce unnecessary pressure in regards to that person from the enemy team.
For example, if you see the enemy Kindred is mastery level 7, it could make your team feel like they should be careful around her, maybe killing some of their confidence and in turn making their level of play less efficient.
Because the level 6 and 7 banners are not a show of mastery, they're a show of spending $10 to get a "chance" to get enough blue essence for the level.
And before they say "muh tokens coming out in a few weeks" they introduced dynamic que saying solo que was coming in the next few weeks didn't they?
That still doesn't change the fact you need to earn several S ranks I'm game to earn the next to levels.
It started with loading screen borders and trying to avoid toxicity, but they threw that out the window when they made icons visable, like cant let them see my shiny plat border because they might flame or give up, but eyyyyy let me flash my shiny plat icon instead. At this point there is 0 reason why they cant just make it show on both sides.
But you can choose to not show your plat icon while you can't hide your border.
no reason it should be visible. if you see a team full of rank 7's with 1 guy with no rank, you should focus just that guy, this prevents that type of mind set
They said they don't do it to prevent BM or something but honestly if i worked to get my gold boarder i want everyone to be able to see it.
I kinda agree with this, everyone checks stats through sites like www.lolking.com or www.lolskill.com anyways.
I shall invoke fear in the hearts of my enemies with this change
I really don't think that you should HAVE to show your teammates your borders even. I don't care to for the diamond premade on my team to know I'm gold.
As unranked player with low diamond MMR i disagree. Nobody cares about your borders/mastery, only about your skill.
...is that not what I said? That I don't want to show my borders to people? Cause they seem to assume based off borders what your skill is.
Don't worry, you'll see that level 7 mastery graves icon a lot as he's killing your team.
you do see the ribbon on levels 6 and 7 when the player does something like gets a kill, takes a tower etc
Also for levels 4 and five.
It was stupid that this is removed.
It's like Mormons in Park City, UT not letting the liquor store put a sign up or mark the building as a liquor store.

Enemies can't see your masteries unless you show them or you get a kill.
You can see if enemy has rank 7 mastery (not sure about 6) even if they don't use emote There's special border for anyone with rank 7 mastery when they get kill/killed http://i.imgur.com/UTPGmUR.png
I wanna show off to the enemy before the game even starts so that my early game Ctrl-6 BM shenanigans are even more ostentatious. Good idea! (Like in all seriousness though Rito make it happen) [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
