My Udyr Rework
My concept of Udyr's rework revols mostly around my, and most people's playstyle with this champion, which comes from one, if not the most famous Udyr players, the Breacher himself, Trick2g.
I heard rumors on that Udyr is getting a rework this season, but that was around the same time when Trick didnt enjoy league much and said he'd quit by the start of this season (season 9), and thats when the rumors came that Udyr is getting a rework this season. Now I'm not saying that is why Trick is still playing this season (altough he doesn't enjoy it that much anymore).
So if Riot is actually planning, or let's say they still know that this champ exists and know it needs a big update, one thing is for sure: They will leave the stances as it is. He will probably get some active spells, and maybe the stances will just be a passive part of him. Also, as visual design, they should start off from the skin that was supposed to be a visual update, but turned out to be so good that it became the most expensive skin (and best imo) in the game: Spirit Guard Udyr. I'm sure, that the design that went into the Spirit Guard Udyr skin, is probably equal to what goes into a rework'a or a new champion's design.
So when I think of a reworked Udyr, I think of the Spirit Guard Udyr, so lets just stick with that as a visual.
For his core gameplay, Udyr should be a champion with a lot of options. His four stances should still be the same, but they all resemble a role that can be taken in a game
- Bear: Tank - Defense
- Turtle: Support - Utility
- Tiger: Damage Carry - AD
- Phoenix: Damage Carry - AP
Maxing one means, you partially give up on the others, unlike with the current kit. Leveling throughout a game sould be like choosing your skillpoints in Fallout. This playstyle would be similar to Kayn's Tank or Assasin choice, but with four options. At the end of a game, Udyr should have 2 maxed out skills, or traits if you will, the other two would fall behind (just like now if you go AP, your Tiger gets useless), so you could combine either DAMAGE with UTILTY, or DAMAGE-DEFENSE, maybe DAMAGE-DAMAGE or UTILITY-DEFENSE.
His gameplay should definitely support objective play, such as taking Epic Monsters, Towers or Inhibitors, however, going for a damage build (either Phoenix or Tiger) would mean you lose some of this benefit.
Reminder that I didnt keep the low cooldown spells that benefit from switching stances in a fast pace, but instead, regular spells with regular/longer cooldowns, however, more stances can be active at the same time, and using specific stances in a good order could reward you with insane combos.
My concept of Q - Tiger Stance Tiger stance would provide most of his AD damage output, if the player decides to go this path. I was thinking of a multi-cast ablility, like Riven's Q, with a decent gap-closer, and probably a heavy-ass-damage scratch, to leave the DOT (Damage Over TIme) as it is! If you decided to go Tiger, even a Lethality-Assasin role could be filled, maybe even on midlane.
My concept of W - Turtle Stance This is a mostly utility spell, with less focus on self defense, and more focus on keeping a teammate or two alive. I have a pretty specific vision of this spell: Udyr sets up a barrier of Turtle Shell that creates a dome around him. The dome blocks 100% damage, if Udyr is attacked on the back side of the dome, on the rest of the parts, its just partial damage reduction. The reduced amout of damage is redirected into Udyr. Setting up this barrier provides Udyr a shield. Standing in the circle, or dome that is set up around Udyr and follows him, heals you for the amount of shield Udyr has lost during blocking incoming spells. If the dome doesnt block any damage, and the shield wasnt reduced by enemy damage, it decays over a short time, healing instantly for a portion of the shield power. This spell could make Udyr a viable support. It's complexity and utility is reasonable, because this is the only utilizing spell Udyr could use as a support, besides the Crowd Control his E provides
My concept of his E - Bear Stance A defense-spell, that lets him stay in the mix. This would still be the spell that provides the Crowd Control. I dont have a specific idea on what it should be though.
My concept of R - Phoenix Stance This would definitely remain as the spell that provides AP damage. As you could learn from W - Turtle Stance, Udyr takes benefit from turning his back on the enemies, and even running from them, just so he can wait for the perfect time to turn the tides, and change the combat in a matter of seconds. This one is pretty specific too. Phoenix Stance is a large transformation. When inactive, it shows the Tail of the Phoenix, that's trailed behind him, following the exact same pathing he took, with the exception of unit collision, back to a few seconds (like Ekko's R shadow). This Tail is invisible for the enemy team. Upon activation, Udyr burts up in flames, turning into a Phoenix. The tail lights up the pathing behind him, dealing high DOT effect, and slowing enemies. Udyr's damage spells should be multi-cast abilities. Phoenix' multi-casts would provide lots of different types of effects, dealing heavy AP damage.
His spells would give stat bonuses. On each Level-up, you can Learn or Advance a skill, and take the passive upgrade of another spell, but with each level-up, the bonus of the spells you didn't choose earlier would be reduced, so this benefits maxing two Stances. Item builds would differ, depending on the Two Maxed out stances. The shop sould keep up with your upgrades so you dont have to look for items.
His kit would reward smart casting orders with either great Crowd Control effects, or grear damage output.
His passive would provide a mechanic that helps taking objectives. I was thinking of bonus damage to objectives that scales from collecting or "taming" spirits, which could either be done through killing jungle camps, or slaying lane minions.
Activating a stance would make him transform completely into that animal, and casting another during one being active would make him switch quickly. For example, if you activate Turtle first, the shield comes up, now, you can activate Tiger, to run away from a chasing enemy squad and catch up to a temmate to shield them. Or using Tiger leaps to get deep into the enemy team, and then activating Bear, to stun multiple enemies.
So this is my concept of his gameplay changes. Im actually curious, how different or similar the actual Rework will be, both compared to my vison, and the current champ. Also, with the Rework, Riot should release a skin for this champ finally. And non other than Godyr. As Trick said: If Lee can get one and Jax can get one that Udyr should get one too!
I'm planning to make visuals for this concept too, of course only if people actually care about this post!
