October MCCC: Memories Reborn

Moby the White·10/3/2014, 3:30:05 AM·11 votes·4,047 views

READ THIS FIRST! Please do not post here to advertise champions. DO NOT POST CONCEPTS HERE UNTIL THE FIRST. I posted this early so people can begin getting ideas. MCCC Concept's not posted here (must also have link if in separate thread) will not be judged. I will not search for your concept on the forums. If I do not see it. I do not judge it.

Welcome to October's Monthly Champion Creation Contest! This is a four-week contest to see who can create the most complete and best champion concept within a given set of parameters.

Your host this month is yours truly, Moby the White. As far as Judging goes, I have one rule, I follow a strict rubric, and I will provide an explanation for why I feel as though I do. I will not argue with you, if you wish to argue I will disqualify you. I will however oblige any calm collective conversation with you.

Also assisting me this month is ElementLlama in judging.

Here is my Rubric

Abilities: (X/25) Do the abilities work well together, resulting in fun combos for summoners to employ? Are the numbers balanced compared to similar abilities? Is each ability worth putting points in? 5 points per ability.

I use the following criteria:

  1. Utility- does it have some sort of mechanic? Is it specific to your champions role?
  2. Synergy- is it a mechanic that will work with your abilities? If it is a standalone ability how much does it benefit your champion or your team?
  3. Theme -does it create a consistent theme with your lore?
  4. Clarity-does it have proper syntax (spelling and grammar), does it make sense or is information missing or even confusing?
  5. Balance- does it have balanced numbers? Is there counterplay to this ability?

Story: (X/25) Does the story make sense and fit in with other champions' Lore? Does the story adequately explain the champion's abilities? Is it within a reasonable length? Does it stir emotion?

I use the following criteria:

  1. Clarity-syntax does your lore have proper spelling and grammar? Fluidity-does your lore flow well in story going from point to point and makes sense?
  2. Theme- does your lore have a strong thematic approach?
  3. Motivation- does your lore explain how they got their powers and why they joined the league? Or where is the league now? Why does your champion exist?
  4. Tone and mood- how does it read and does it inspire emotional response? Does the reader like reading it?
  5. Originality- is you lore original or unique? Or does it put an innovative twist on something well known?

Lore Secret Challenge: X/10 Judged under the same rubric as Lore is.

Gameplay: (X/10) Does the champion as a whole make people want to play it? Is it fun to play as? Is it fun to play against? Is it different from champions that already exist in the game? Is the interface and targeting confusing or streamlined? Do enemies have some way to counter-play your mechanics, or are they dead no matter how well they play? Note: if they are dead no matter how they play, that’s bad.

Theme (X/10) and Challenges (X/10) Did the Champion and his/her abilities fit the Theme? Do they satisfy the challenges mapped out for them? Champions who cannot pass the Theme and Challenges are disqualified, and that’s that.

Stats (X/10) Are the stats balanced and appropriate?

    • -Total: 100 pts

There's no limit on how many people can sign up for Week 1, but champions without complete lore or abilities will be eliminated.

AFTER WEEK 1, SIGN UPS ARE CLOSED. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

In addition, if you fail to complete your abilities and/or story by the time their respective weeks end, you will be eliminated once prelims begin. Don't argue - you've been warned. Just for clarification, however, you CAN scrap/edit a champion concept and start over after week 1 is over so long as you met the deadlines for your previous champion(s). However, you cannot do this once Week 2 has ended.

This doesn't mean you have to "come up with an idea before coming up with an idea". You can post lore and stats early, you just need four abilities and an innate up. Even if they don't meet the challenges, I won't disqualify you for that after week 1. I only check the theme/challenges part during prelims and judging.

Now, onto the Theme and Challenges!

THEMES:

Memories Reborn- specific Lore challenge. Specific Ability Challenge.

--First, one of your abilities needs to include a mechanic based on Memory. Whether it is their ability power source, similar to Vayne's bolt or last enemy hit attacks, or spell storage where you cast spells in combinations and if previously spell a was cast within time Y effect X happens. ETC! You design it, you explain it!

Lore Challenge: MEMORIES REBORN: Fate and destiny entertwined, as that which was becomes undefined. In the constant battle of duality we ask what is real and what is lies. Champions are born, and champions arise. But their pasts are haunting, as is a haunting guise. What was real has now been erased, the IoW IS NOW GONE! I wonder what happened to the place?

Your champion has been introduced into the realm of Runeterra, but things are changing, IoW is gone, and now Shurima stands to bring a new story. What has happened with your champion? Do they remember the IoW, or the league? OR have their memories been tampered with?

Your goal with this challenge is to recreate your champions past, and to do this I developed a secret challenge: Take one of the first champions you have ever made and introduce him to your new champion. Develop a short story or dialogue or even art comic describing their meeting. Their topic for discussion: the IoW and its retcon. What is the truth? Who is right?

Your Lore should reflect the conversation they had and possible conflicting memories your champion will have after becoming Reborn!

Trick or Treat- This Halloween is full of tricks and treats. So as such I have a few tricks up my sleeve along with a few treats.

What side are you on?- In the realm of Hallow's Eve there is the concept of duality, good vs. evil and all that comes with it.

So pick your side. There are Four Factions: Heaven/Hell, Light/Dark, Dream/Nightmare, Truth/Lies (aka Trick/Treat). Each side for the sake of argument will be dubbed a spectrum. A major spectrum is where you must satisfy the theme's requirements, A minor spectrum is where you utilize the spectrum thematically, but don't satisfy the requirements. e.g. Using heaven as a minor theme when making an angel.

Pick from the four factions, and then choose your side! You may choose to pick up to 3 spectrums from the four factions.

Will you be lawful good: Where you have up to three good spectrums (at least 1 major)?

Will you be lawful evil: Where you have up to two good spectrums (at least 1 major) and 1 major/minor bad?

Will you be lawful neutral: Where you have 1 major good spectrum, and 1 major/minor bad?

Will you be chaotic neutral: Where you have 1 major bad spectrum, and 1 major/minor good?

Will you be chaotic good: Where you have up to 2 bad spectrums (at least 1 major), and 1 major/minor good?

Will you be chaotic evil: Where you have up to 3 bad spectrums (at least 1 major)?

You get to mix and match from the 8 spectrums and design a champion based around that theme.

For any minor theme you may capture the theme in your own way. Create what you believe the theme is about. This means the challenge of that theme is not necessary. So long as you declare what your aligment is, you may declare anything to be a minor theme. You must have at least 1 major theme to satisfy the requirements for the challenge.

e.g. I am lawful good with 2 major goods and a minor good theme.

Lore Tip: using your minor theme to reflect your Lore Theme is really smart. E.g. Robin Hood is Chaotic Good. He has minor bad of tricks, But he also helps those in need like treat.

If you have any questions in regard to the alignment system or if your concept would satisfy a certain type please do not hesitate to ask here, or via email [email protected], or even via twitter @MobytheWhite I really hope I explained it well enough, but I know it is confusing so please do not hesitate to ask.

Heaven or Hell

Heaven - Champion is granted bonuses based on ally deaths ex. When an ally champion dies, you or your team gains a buff, etc.

Hell - Champion is granted bonuses based on enemy deaths ex. Upon having an enemy champion die, you capitalize on the death.>

Light and Dark Light - Champion utilizes light mechanics ex. Revealing, or expanding awareness Or even something as simple as Lux.

Dark - Champion utilizes dark mechanics ex. Blind, or prevent vision. Or something as simple as Nocturne.

Dream and Nightmare

Dream - champion has abilities allowing you or an ally to become unstoppable in some fashion.

Nightmare - Champion abilities make the enemies see things that don't exist and or fear them. Again Nocturne>

Trick and Treat

Trick - Champion abilities mislead or deceive the enemy team.

Treat - Champion helps allies, i.e. aoe buffs at a range, think sona's snuggle zones but not centered on yourself>

SECRET CHALLENGES:

  1. List/Describe and or draw what your champions Harrowing Skin would be.
  2. If your champion was giving out candy what kind would it be?

SCHEDULE: Week 1. Oct 1-7 Lore, Abilities, and Stats- Begin working on these

Week 2. Oct 8-14 Entries are closed on last day of Week 1. I will announce it. When I announce it that is final! SECRET CHALLENGES REVEALED

WEEK 3. 14-24 PRELIMS-those that do not have Lore and Abilities posted by the end of Week 2 are eliminated. You have all week to change them, but they do need to have a Lore rough draft completed, PQWER posted, and stats when prelims begin. By the end of week 3 you should have this completed, and you should work on completing your explanations; additionally, any commentary on how game-play is affected is beneficial to your game-play score.

Week 4. All entries locked, Judging Begins upon announcement. Winners announced after judgments are complete. >

As judges, we cannot enter our own contest, neither can any of the judges, but if you have any questions about the requirements I am happy to answer them.

Don’t forget, no using already existing champions, as that defeats the purpose.

Good Luck and Have Fun! I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

Note from Moby,

I know I've been away for a while, but that doesn't mean I'll be going easy on you, or don't remember how to make a champion. Trust me when I say competition will be fierce this month. The shortened time frame for you to work with will make this rough. But by now, you have all become great Champcrafters, I expect the best from you at this point. d

To from the boards I welcome you to join us from the old forums. Additionally if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Good Luck and have fun, Moby the White @MobytheWhite [email protected]

I find that, with how the boards are set up now, that using external pages can make this slightly easier to use. Unless Moby prefers that I post Ozu here too, I'm just going to post the link.

Ozu, the Spectral Knight

The Core Augur10/3/2014, 6:58:53 AM3 votes

Ugh. This is going to butcher my formatting. I'll figure out how to post this picture of Looten Plunder I swear to god.

Name: Eli "I Don't Caribou" Calhoun

Title: Ecoterrorist

Eli is a monstrous douchebag who controls a great deal of lumberyards throughout Valoran. He has a hired hand who will do whatever Eli says, if the price is right.

Passive: Filth - Eli's abilities spawn a pool of Filth near Eli in a random direction, a random number of units away. If Eli steps on this pool of filth, he acquires a stack of Filth and takes 2.5% of his current health in true damage. If an opponent steps in a pool of filth, they are Polluted and take 5% of their current health in true damage. Pools of filth last 10 seconds. Filth stacks last 10 seconds. Filth is expended on the first ability cast while Eli has a stack of Filth, bolstering the ability's damage by 25% per Filth stack.

Eli does not take Filth damage from using Environmental Disaster, or from stacks of Filth generated via Seepage.

Q: Pollution - Eli hurls a pulsating globule of toxic waste at an opponent. If this opponent is struck, they are afflicted with "Rank Pollution", This globule can be intercepted by an enemy champion, suffusing them with waste and debuffing them with "Pollution". When Eli strikes an opponent with Rank Pollution with three auto attacks, they spawn a Pool of Filth nearby. Opponents who are afflicted with Pollution are revealed.

The globule moves slowly enough that interception is not impossible.

W: Seepage - Eli utilizes a Pool of Filth as though it were a portal, entering a target Pool of Filth and exiting from the one designated by a vector, similar to Viktor's E. Doing so rewards Eli with two stacks of Filth, and doesn't use up any stacks of Filth he already has.

E: Bile Blight - Eli suffuses an opponent with potent blight, dealing damage to an opponent and each opponent that shares a "type" with it(IE Champions, Caster Minions, Melee Minions, Siege Minions) within a moderate radius. If two or more opponents of the same type are struck, a Pool of Filth is spawned nearby and they are afflicted by Pollution.

R: Environmental Disaster - Eli absorbs all Pools of Filth on the map, gaining stacks of Filth for each Pool, before expunging it from his being in a wide range. The ability's damage is relatively minor, and should only be used if there are a lot of active Pools of Filth, or if Eli has a sizable Filth stack already. The radius is increased per Filth stack.

Appearance:

Challenges: Major Evil: Hell: In Lore: Eli Calhoun has spent his entire life grinding everything that is good and natural into a fine powder under his heel. He has no compassion for people who won't do whatever it takes to succeed in life. In Kit: Bile Blight rewards him if he manages to kill multiples of the same type of opponent in one Blight. Minot Good: Light: In Lore: His work clears the land, robbing it of foliage. He outsources terraforming to powerful sorcerers to give his workers an easier time of getting around. In this way, he robs the world of cover. In Kit: He can see what he pollutes. Any opponent debuffed with Pollution is visible to Eli while they are Polluted.

Memory Challenge: Filth is a memory mechanic in that, for each ability you cast, you create areas of Filth in a random direction from Eli. Eli can walk over these areas to receive a stack of Filth! Eli can stack as much Filth as he can manage, there is no upper limit - just what is possible to create and survive. For each stack of Filth Eli manages to acquire, his next ability used is increased by a large amount. In this way, his ability used remembers how many abilities he cast, and how much Filth Eli managed to acquire.

Memory Challenge: Eli has purchased the chess-playing automaton, Isaiah, for a song. However, he has practically lobotomized the thing. It is no longer capable of free thought, and instead is only capable of logical, analytical chess. It's no fun to lose to a machine that knows it won and can mock you for it.

Casual bump

The Core Augur10/14/2014, 6:25:47 AM2 votes

Eli's abilities are filled out and his challenges are up. I still need to work on the lore.

Raptamei10/14/2014, 7:10:44 PM2 votes

The forums still eat nuts, but I cared just long enough to fix up Khajor and re-enter him. Probably won't make a new character for next month though.

Khajor now has a stolen face, because you can't get upvotes without copyright infringement!

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/73430000/jpg/_73430022_kilrathi.jpg

Edit: updated again just in time, fixing the stupid ult and nerfhammering Q. It was only a better Frenzy on a 9 second cooldown with a suppression lol.

Elphrihaim10/23/2014, 7:32:59 AM2 votes

I'm sorry, Moby... I don't think I'll be able to finish my entry on the deadline. I underestimated my workload, but I can promise that I will get it done in less than 48 hours...

>_<

The Core Augur10/24/2014, 5:27:46 PM2 votes

I'm just annoyed that my lore's too big. I typed it up. Tried to post it. It said it was too big. So I got all disheartened again and stopped working, lol.

I reckon I'll need to, like, design a champion around the forums next time, you know?

Ruduen10/30/2014, 1:34:52 PM2 votes

Don't I get a score?

Othello the Cat10/30/2014, 3:27:57 PM2 votes

It's kind of weird that I have a trend of either making a Top 3 champion or a bottom 5 champion. Huh. At least Ozu did we this time! Thanks for judging!

By the way, was there an arranged date for the MCCC x CCC meeting?

Moby the White10/30/2014, 5:08:33 PM2 votes

Well then rap some short summary: Lore was well written, I felt as though astetu could've played a larger part in it since you combined lore w/ the challenge. I felt a though Khajor was personality wise very similar to rengar.

your Passive was cool I really loved the synergy Q I thought was cool idea. I think you could clarify if the target can cast at all. W would not work in current gameplay mechanics due to shared vision E is a team grab that can't miss... basically blitz/thresh but better R Is really cool that it forces a khazix situation.

I liked the theme and challenges were fine. just felt that your abilities did not have good gameplay nor was one of them applicable at all.

November MCCC TBA Tomorrow: hosted by RamsaySnow, Moby White, and Sir Arma.

Elphrihaim10/3/2014, 7:04:28 PM2 votes

Honoka, the Child of Memories... Who shall incorporate many things. References to different kits from concepts that I've made all woven together into one complete champion and character, who fights with the power of her ancestors at each step.

All but one of which haven't ever been posted because I'm a lazy person that never got around to writing decent lore for a League of Legends conversion for their abilities. Not all of which have the ability to be converted into league formats.

Raptamei10/3/2014, 8:39:07 PM2 votes

I hate my life. And these boards.

DEATH AND GLORY! Khajor, Conqueror from the Stars

Because what the League totally needs is a Klingon.

Raptamei10/9/2014, 3:39:52 PM2 votes

I'm withdrawing Khajor-N-Hhall from the MCCC. I realised belatedly that the "memory" theme also needs to include the kit and not just the lore. -derp-

Fixing that is easy when you have 3 ults, but I don't see the point because this forum tries its hardest to eliminate threads that are more than a week old from the face of the earth. Why even bother spending any time on champion concepts that disappear into the blackest pits in less time than it took to write them. Not even Krad could preserve this.

Just like the Steam Workshop, this vapid, instant gratification "lifestream" concept discourages depth and gradual polish in favour of a stupid rush to "hot" status and immediate abandonment afterwards. Between the lore rework and a forum that actively tries to destroy its own past, I wonder if Riot is ashamed of its history.

The MTG contest? Big on the old forum but stillborn on Boards because nobody upvoted it in the first few hours and thus it got washed off the front page and never surfaced again. That's another day of work I'll never get back. (RIP Eladamright) The CCC? They're used to this wasteland and act like it's totally fine that the freaking CCC thread itself is ten pages in the hole no matter how many bumps it gets just because Riot imposed that threads are no longer relevant after a week.

It's been a fun 3 years between Imperatus and today, thanks to everyone involved with these contests. Best of luck all.

Moby the White10/10/2014, 4:20:01 AM2 votes

You can just email me or post the link in this thread, making it easier for me to judge and easier for you to find. I am willing to work with you Rap. I'd hate to see you eliminate yourself because of this.

Additionally the 1st secret challenge is that I want you to tell me what your champion's harrowing skin is. :)

Raptamei10/10/2014, 7:54:02 PM2 votes

I ported Eona from the old forum and got 3 immediate downvotes and a guy telling me that the picture is copyrighted (herpderp thanks officer). This forum can go suck an egg.

Still Eternity10/3/2014, 3:41:28 AM1 votes

Name: Cagney Sabrepoint

Title: The Dusk Inquisitor

Appearance

Lore: TBA

Stats: TBA

Abilities

Passive: Flicker: Every time Cagney uses Flash or a Flash-like ability, he will gain a shield that will block the very next auto attack or ability used against him for a few seconds. If multiple Flash-like abilities are used before the duration of his shield expires, it will refresh the duration. He, thusly, can only have one shield at a time.

Ability Q: Swordplay: Cagney swipes his swords forward in a line, dealing damage to all enemies. If he struck a Champion, this ability becomes Sword Dance, and allows Cagney to flash behind the Champion tagged with Swordplay. If multiple Champions were hit by Swordplay, Cagney will only mark the very last one hit by the ability, similar to Leona's E.

Ability W: Hoodwink: Cagney can target either an enemy or an ally with this ability. If he targets an enemy, he scoops up a handful of dirt and tosses it into their eyes, blinding them and reducing their field of vision significantly for a few seconds and dealing damage to them. If he targets an ally, he leaps to their side and visually becomes an exact copy of the target allied Champion for a few seconds. If he takes or deals damage while he has assumed the visage of one of his allies, his illusion will shatter and he will be revealed.

Ability E: Just Business: Cagney prepares himself to strike! One his next auto attack, he will deal bonus damage to whatever he hits, along with instantly being able to land another bonus attack onto them. The second attack will also slow the attacked enemy by 50% for 1 second.

Ultimate: Shadowstep: Cagney dashes through the shadows and blinks behind target enemy Champion, dealing damage to them. Once he has done so, his auto attacks and abilities will deal bonus damage to the Champion he targeted with Shadowstep. Cagney can use Shadowstep three times before setting it on cooldown. If he Shadowsteps to a new target, he forfeits the damage bonus to whatever Champion he previously targeted.

Other Stuff: TBA

Challenges: Major Theme: Darkness

Minor Themes: Light, Tricks

EDIT: Question, how do you put the actual image itself into the posts?

ElementLlama10/30/2014, 1:54:14 PM1 votes

Your score was really low... your stats were decent but for the kind of champ you made it was blatantly op... You did have a massive damage dealer with the ability to become untargetable... If you want I could comment on your concept giving you an idea of what went mechanically wrong with your champion.

Moby the White10/30/2014, 8:33:50 PM1 votes

just the way it was worded implied that you wanted people behind the cone to see and people in front to not see..

Still Eternity10/7/2014, 12:35:59 PM1 votes

Gosh darn Dodger, why did you post like 12 times...

Elphrihaim11/1/2014, 3:37:32 AM1 votes

IT NEVER HAPPENS

I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHY I DID WELL

Probably one of your better lores I've judged btw.

Just a note I intend to host for the next few months. feel free to contact me about judging or co-hosting if you have ideas or a theme in mind already. So if you want next month to be November theme to be turkey day entitled, I am cool with that. If you have any qualms about this feel free to contact me so I can explain why I wish to continue hosting.

The rubric is on the first post. And as I said I will gladly discuss your score with you in Person

Moby the White10/30/2014, 12:36:31 PM1 votes

since it is such a small amount of contestants I thought I could have a 1 on 1 with you . I have your scorings in my pc and I can post them later tonight...but I'd rather have a discussion with you.

RickDodger10/30/2014, 6:14:45 PM1 votes

Just leaving a post up to wait on feedback with my champion concept. I wanted to fix any unfavorable mechanics in it since the contest is done now.
