Champion Sneak Peek Tricks

Before Jinx was released, Riot gave us a clever hint of her appearance by messing with the information pages on Vi , including the wiki. Made it look as if Jinx was messing with the information. The first time I saw this, I thought someone hacked the website and trolled players who love using Vi. But as Jinx was released, that's when I realized that was just her champion sneak peek.

There are many ways to reveal a new challenger. I was wondering. . . how else could Riot reveal a new champion sneak peek? Affect the visuals of gameplay? Mess with the website like they did for Jinx? Mess with a specific champion? How else do you think is a clever way of a champion reveal or sneak peek?

I think Riot could do a lot with SR to indicate something's coming.

  • Change the weather
  • Have something happen in the background
  • Alter flora or fauna
  • Perhaps Dragon or Baron could be "damaged" or altered from an encounter with a new champion or as a result of an event
  • Maybe have a mysterious new item in one of the store keepers stashes
  • If the store keepers ever do get VO they could mention something casually "Seems like the weather has taken a turn for the worst" (Tease Ao Shin) "That bow? A dark man came by looking for that" (Special Dialogue to Varus, hinting at future champ)
  • The structures could be altered or perhaps a new monster could temporary take the place of one of the camps?
  • Footprints, markings or equipment in the jungle (Similar to Bard)

I personally would like to see more written stuff like the additional lore released for Rek'sai. I think of all the stories and promotion items released in 2014 the Noxian cartographer's journal was the most interesting. Gave us so much information about the new lore, this next to the map of the black mists prior to Kalista were my favorite promotional items. NOTICE: both of these weren't videos or cinematics - two mediums which I believe has to work much harder to communicate similar messages. Plus videos take a lot more resources.

My least favorite promotional items of 2014 were probably the videos.

Trails of Poro, First Contact, the Mountain, the Shuriman Event - they don't add much more to their associated champions or the world their in.

This is a great topic. I'd love to see some ideas from the community!

One I was thinking of for a nature or animal based champ

  • When a player gains a jungle buff (eg Red or Blue), the info box for the buff could say something like 'Nature will have its revenge'. It's something that's easily missed, but when found would quickly spread. This could also vary from buff to buff.

Leading on from that, for a particularly judgmental or arrogant champ

  • The text that appears in chat when a player achieves a kill, double, triple, quadra, or penta, could be followed by some sort of grading eg. 'x has slain X for a double kill!' 'Am I supposed to be impressed?' or 'x has slain x for a pentakill!' 'Foes so easily slain are hardly worth fighting.'

For a stealth or ghostly type champ from say Shadow Isle

  • Something like a very dim outline of a champion model appear in Fog of War, kind of like they're watching the player but whenever the player tries to get close to them, they disappear.

For a Void monster champ

  • The small creatures disappear from around the map. So the l forest chameleons, ducks, Antlermice, Porowls slowly get removed from the map over the course of several patches. The Poros on Howling Abyss could also be removed in say the final week because they would be the most noticeable.

Are the constant lag spikes (for both teams) in my matches supposed to be the next champion sneak peek? If so, they're extremely effective. Everyone's noticing.

I have two ways that I think would be pretty cool:

  1. Slight changes for champions already in the game, nothing that affects gameplay of course just visuals things like for example when jinx was released they could of changed caits or vi's appearance to look roughed up or something

and

  1. They could affect the launcher like for when ekko came they could of made it so when you clicked launch it took you back to the emblem before the client opened.

To hype the Ekko release a little more, I think it would have been cool if, shortly after the nexus explodes at the end of the game, the game "rewinds". The nexus could go back to being whole for a brief second, and explode all over again.

For Braum maybe have some occassional snow flurry particles on the maps, and replace a few of the SR critters with poros

Have to bump this. Anyone else want to share?

Alterations to the client.

Everyone would take notice then.

Maybe when Ao Shin eventually comes around, all the game maps could have a perpetual thunderstorm covering them for a week before he's announced?
