Change "Challenger Ahri" back to "Dauntless Ahri"

Hello, I would like to express my opinion regarding the recent name change to the upcoming skin "Challenger Ahri." Quite a few players expressed opinions against the change, but I would like to bring attention to reasoning and arguments besides "dauntless sounds cooler."

-"Challenger" is already used to identify League's most elite group of players. The fact that it appears on this skin creates ambiguity and confusion for those that aren't familiar with the concept. This leads to a mix of the overall flavor and precedence to the existence of the skin. As it is legacy, once the skin retires to the vault, players might ask those that have it "Do I have to be challenger to get that?" Confusion of customers isn't a good thing.

-The "Challenged" Ahri jokes are bound to happen and have already happened in community reactions. This is NOT okay, as the jokes poke fun at a character for having a mental disability, and are offensive to those who might experience prejudice because of unique mental conditions. While it isn't Riots fault if players choose to make such rude and unacceptable jokes, keeping the skin's name at "challenger" only fuels the fire for stereotyping and hurtful "jokes."

-Both iterations of the skin seek to convey the desire of players to climb the Elo ladder at the start of a fresh season, but who exactly is a player challenging? Being a "challenger" in any sort of competition typically refers to a competitor of lesser skill or reputation seeking to dethrone a higher competitor. However, ranked LoL players battle against players of equal level, so calling Ahri a "challenger" makes little sense. Dauntless expresses an unquenchable fire that burns in each player whether bronze 5 or Challenger (not the skin, the rank). Players will plow through each battle and never stop living the dream.

EDIT: Excellent points brought up by HuskerWolf82:

I have to agree with this as well for similar reasons. Riot, this just isn't smart business. I was like many here who have said when Dauntless Ahri was announced: INSTA-BUY. Especially since Ahri is one of my favorite champions. Now you see a lot of people saying they are not going to get it now or are unsure because of the change to "Challenger" Ahri. You're losing support and money towards an idea and skin you've spent time developing. Future champions to come in the "Challenger" series will also likely face similar uncertainty or ridicule.

If you want this skin series to be successful like "Battlecast", "Arcade", "Blood Moon", etc, I think you would be better served with it being Dauntless. The name alone gives the player a sense of fearless resolve to rise up the ranks whereas Challenger just makes it sound normal and gimmicky. Everyone faces the challenge of making it up the ranks, but are they dauntless in determination? Just sounds ten times better! Dauntless is a worthy name to coincide with the end-season "Victorious" skin name.

I also have to agree with the potential harassing a player as mentally "challenged" when they wear this skin. None of us players nor Riot can ignore the fact that there is still a lot of toxic players out there that go beyond simple smack talking because of the anonymity this gaming environment provides. They will say whatever is unacceptable in any social environment because they know they will not face ridicule or retaliation as they would in real life since they are faceless here on the internet.

I have seen comments about raping another player's mother. I witnessed another case where a player apologetically said they had to briefly go afk because their dog was having a seizure and a person responded "I hope it dies." And you don't think people won't have a field day with this "Challenger" to mock and insult players, some of whom may have relatives or are themselves dealing with a disability like this? That would be delusional to say the least. I am against getting too PC, but this one warrants thinking about changing it because the potential toxicity a "Challenger" skin series could create.

Previous commenters suggesting the handicapped or disabled make fun of themselves to make themselves feel better simply just don't get it. There's a major difference between making light of your specific disability and having someone intentionally try to hurt you with their words. Some say bullying is a part of life and people just need to suck it up. Well that in itself is bull as targeted words can hurt for a long time and even drive some to commit suicide. That's why I say some measure of PC in this is justifiable. Don't enable the trolls further with this change in name.

I sincerely hope a red sees this reasoning and gets Riot to consider the benefits of changing the name back the the awesomeness of "Dauntless Ahri". Thank you.

TL;DR -"challenger" is already a LoL term, so having a skin line of the same name would lead to confusion -"Challenged" Ahri jokes are extremely insensitive and no OK. -"Dauntless" expresses the purpose of the skin better than "challenger" does. -"Dauntless" would sell more for the planned skin series as a whole

This is the single slickest skin around IMO, so please take my suggestions into consideration.

Thank you for reading!

Definitely prefer "Dauntless" yup. You pretty much gave all the good reasons for it already so nothing more to add other than my agreement.

I'm going to have to agree to the idea of reverting the name for Ahri's upcoming skin from "Challeneger" to "Dauntless."

Upon first hearing about the skin, the name sounded unique and identified itself for its purpose. I saw the skin from the PBE and was thought to myself, "Wow, this skin. It's really good and drawn out. It is truely a skin to have for her." I continued to read that it was the "antithesis to the championship skins" and was created to "celebrate the start of the next season." The whole concept fit.

Then I read a few days later that the name was changed to Challeneger. I thought to myself, "hmm ok. Now are they going to do this with the championship skins? Because having one theme named 'championship,' reflecting the end and progress of the season, and another 'Challeneger,' reflecting the beginning and the future of the season, does not fit together. 'Dauntless' seems more appropriate."

Honestly, the move that they made does not suit the skin and its theme. I hope they revert it back, the "Dauntless" theme can set up for great skins in the future! ^^

I agree with you 100%!!! I hope a red sees this

Challenger just sounds lame to be honest. Dauntless implies that somebody is totally unphased by a challenge, only truly brave people are Dauntless. Challenger means squat. Anybody can be a challenger (not meaning the ranked rating, but in terms of challenging anything), but a challenger can still get their butt handed to them by whoever the champion is, so it loses its meaning.

I really like Ahri and this skin but I wont like the fact that anytime ill wear the skin people will make jokes about people like my brother. Please Riot change the name back, Dauntless just was a more interesting name and conveyed more emotion while the only emotion that i get from challenger is Anger cause I know people are going to make horrible jokes anytime this skin is used.

"Dauntless" has a much more deceiving connotation, something Ahri fits incredibly well with. I have no idea why they changed the name in the first place.

Although, I don't agree with your stance on people making "challenged" jokes. The fact is that people are going to find some way to make a joke out of everything that can be considered "twisted" or "offensive" to some degree- censoring and putting a different label on everything that is even slightly offensive (which is what a lot of people in America are trying to do right now, and it's driving me nuts) will not suddenly convince people to think the same way that you do.

There are some people that exist who have little to no regard for not only what many regard as common decency, but also other people. Everybody will have to deal with such people in the real world at one point or another, usually more often than they would like to. Declaring the word "challenger" as a term that just adds fuel to the fire is a futile attempt to hide from this reality, and is just as bad as the "challenged" jokes you fear that people will make.

And even if you disagree with my argument, the mute button is still a thing on League (a luxury we don't have in the real world). If you see somebody saying something you don't like, you can just mute them, report them after the game, and you won't have to deal with them ever again.

Challenged Ahri is not 'downs' for this changing back idea.

Blainezy12/21/2014, 11:27:01 PM4 votes

I liked Dauntless better as well. Ahri is one of my main champions so I play her fairly often. Challenger Ahri just sounds too generic to me.

Helmight12/22/2014, 1:23:15 AM4 votes

"Dauntless" is just a cooler word in general than "Challenger". I strongly support renaming the skin, especially after the reasons you listed above.

Rilasha12/22/2014, 4:55:28 PM4 votes

I agree wholeheartedly with all the points you've made here. I personally believe that Dauntless is a much better descriptive name for the skin, as Challenger is just bland and lacks emotion or meaning behind the skin's theme, since it's already a word used to describe the Challenger tier of Ranked queue. I'm sure there's other words that would fit the skin's concept just fine as well.

smüt12/21/2014, 10:30:58 PM4 votes

I completely agree, I'm sure Riot has received letters hopefully similar to this format and can possibly take this into thorough consideration.

Tendrian12/24/2014, 7:54:52 AM4 votes

Please change it back... if it goes live as Challenger it will be the only Ahri skin I won't immediately buy :/

Zaid812/24/2014, 5:21:07 PM4 votes

Dauntless sounds cooler, conveys the meaning of the skin perfectly, and fits Ahri's theme as a whole. Why did they change it in the first place?

warpenguin55512/25/2014, 5:37:26 PM4 votes

is this a petition? because i sign it if so

Trollop12/27/2014, 2:55:53 AM3 votes

I'm on board with this. Keeping the Dauntless name is a great idea.

CrankyChipmonk12/22/2014, 6:43:27 AM3 votes

Nice post

NewGrange12/23/2014, 2:41:20 PM3 votes

first off, it's a stupid connotation about ''challenged'' ahri being a thing, you are too pc.

I had an idea, instead of roping this in with the ''challenger'' group of skins, they could make a ''dauntless'' group of skins for a red side, since most of the unique skins are primarily blue. the championship, victorious and challenger lot.

ExecutorDill12/21/2014, 11:00:33 PM3 votes

Agreed all the way buddy... When I first saw the skin and skin title I was like :D "That's so sleek" then when I saw the name change I was like D: not cool, and not elaborate enough for the skin's visuals. Please know that I strongly disagree and had to refrain from using abusive language that truly expresses how I feel about the name change. BUMP for name revert xD Ahri

DrCyanide1/5/2015, 11:25:41 PM2 votes

Challenger = The unobtainable rank that isn't a goal for 99.9% of the League community.

Why would a skin want to advertise itself as "Reminder of the thing you will never be"?

Realtor1/9/2015, 4:07:34 AM2 votes

this needs to change, the splash art just came out today, and it's epic. such a complete waste with this name. CHANGE IT BACK PLEASE!

Devlios12/30/2014, 5:19:32 AM2 votes

I fell in love with "Dauntless" Ahri as soon as I heard about it. Ahri is my favorite champion and I absoulutely loved the concept behind the skin. Ahri is my favorite champion, but now I don't think I will buy the skin just because of this name change... Change it back please.

Leena Guttal12/22/2014, 12:53:59 AM1 votes

I also wish that riot would post a splash art for challenger ahri soon. I heard the skin was coming out December 23rd, and yet still no splash?

Well it doesn't really matter if the name change is some how wrong its just the name the skin is what it matters :/

Bumping this, it's important

i believe it is called challenger for a reason, i believe it will be a series of skins like the chamionship, number one reason being that it came out at the very start of the lcs season, two being that in addition, championship comes out at the end of the lcs season that is just my opinion, i mean i could be wrong P.S. best ahri skin everAhri
