Change servers

I've been playing leaugue of legends but sometimes i meet people on discord servers and want to play league with them but later discover they are playing on other regions. i still don't get why other games (rainbow six siege) and such have server you can choose. even if i take a region thats at the other side of the world i still get 100 - + ping. and not being able to add friends from other regions is also a big mistery. will this every be something in the futher or will this never happen and always have closed of regions
