Lore

Garam was born in Bandle City. He was a bit peculiar, because he could use the magic despite his young age. However, he wasn’t really interested in his magic power. All he was interested in was the mathematics. He believed that the mathematics is the key to everything, so he studied various fields of the mathematics by himself. One of fields that he was so fond of was the cryptology. When elders saw his talent in cryptography, they offered him the job at the intelligence service and he took it. However, his job was far from his expectations. Instead of dealing with ciphers, he was supposed to monitor Bandle City and to report. Due to his young age, he wasn’t allowed to access to the classified information which was highly encrypted. As a mathematician, Garam couldn’t resist his curiosity, and eventually he succeeded to decrypt and to access to the classified information. And he leaked the classified information to the public for fun. Because of that action, he was sentenced to life in prison, but using his magical power, he escaped from Bandle City. After being exiled, he settled in Freljord and wandered various regions in Runeterra to learn various mathematical information; sometimes he accessed to other regions’ classified information for fun. Obviously, many authorities want to arrest Garam and punish him (and some actually succeeded, but eventually Garam escaped). But Garam knows that he cannot stop himself. He wants to know, and he will know.

Basic Stats

(This is just an approximation. I don't have any accurate calculations for those numerical values)

Health: 500 (+90 per level) Health Regen: 5 (+0.5 per level) Attack Damage: 53 (+2.6 per level) Armor: 21.5 (+3.45 per level) Attack Speed: 0.6 (+3% per level) Magic Resist: 30 (+0.5 per level) Movement Speed: 340

Skills

P: Encryption

Garam encrypts his information so that no one can access to it. The enemy cannot see Garam’s health bar, mana bar, spells and runes.

Q: Trigonometry

Cost: 40/45/50/55/60 Mana Range: 700

Garam fires a magic bullet that deals magic damage to the first enemy hit up to three times. If three bullets hit three distinct enemies, those enemies hit by bullets instantly form a triangle and all enemies in the triangle get magic damages.

Each magic bullet deals 50/80/110/140/170 (+60 AP) magic damage, and all enemies in the triangle get magic damages inversely proportional to the area of triangle.

W: Bijection

Cost: 100 Mana Range: 800/1000/1200

Garam fires a switching bullet. If the switching bullet hit an enemy or an allied minion, Garam can switch the position with the enemy or the allied minion in short amount of time. If the switching bullet hit an ally, the ally can decide to switch the position with Garam in short amount of time.

If the switching bullet hits the enemy or an allied minion, the enemy gets 40/46/52/58/64 (+50% AP) magic damages and Garam can switch the position with the shot enemy or allied minion instantly within 2 seconds. If the switching bullet hits the allied champion, the allied champion can decide to switch the position with Garam instantly within 3 seconds.

E: Decryption

Cost: 80/86/92/98/104 Mana Range: 1000

Garam fires a decrypting bullet that hacks enemy’s head. Any first enemy hit by the decrypting bullet becomes unable to move and gets hacked to attack his or her allied minions or champions near by with basic attacks for short amount of time. And if the decrypting bullet hits the enemy’s turret, the turret temporally becomes an allied turret.

The enemy shot by the decrypting bullet becomes unable to move and attack his or her own allies for 1.2 seconds and get 30/35/40/45 (+60% AP) magic damages.

R: Inverting Fractal

Cost: 70/75/80/85/90 Mana Range: 600

Garam creates the zone in shape of the Apollonian gasket (shown on the picture). All allies and all enemies in the zone get healed instead of damaged as much as the others out of the zone attack them.

Everyone on the zone gets healed 50/55/60 percents of the damage that others out of the zone give.

How to Play

Garam is a mage, but also an assassin. His fighting style isn't focusing on damaging the enemy. He's a very tricky champion who can change the circumstance.

Garam's passive makes enemies to think about attacking him, because they don't know that they can kill him or not. And since enemies cannot see his spells, I suggest to have an Unsealed Spellbook in the rune.

Garam's Q is the most efficient (and easy) way to damage the enemies among his skills; especially minions. And since it can attack multiple minions, this skill is good for laning and gaining cs. But since the damage is inversely proportional to the area, his Q isn't good for killing an enemy champion.

His W can be used to save your allies or yourself. But at least one of you should have a safe health rate. So if there's no healthy allied champion near you, you probably want to use it on a minion to save yourself. You can use his W to deliver enemies to your allies or to kill enemies using turrets.

His E can be used to disable enemy's turret, so it can be very useful for diving. But I would recommend to use it on a fed enemy champion, especially a fed enemy adc. However, if you use E on an enemy, he or she cannot be attacked for a while, so the enemies can come and attack you. And his E is great for a group fight, not 1v1 fight.

Garam's ultimate is really a game changing skill. In a group fight, if your team is in bad circumstance, you can use his R to heal them and disable enemies to attack (they shouldn't attack since attacking will heal them). However, his R can heal the enemies. So if you don't use it carefully, instead of helping, you can make the group fight bad for your teammates. So your team needs to prevent enemies entering the zone.

Despite he's a mage, Garam has a mobility skill. And since he's not really good at damaging the enemy, I suggest to play him as roaming mid laner. He can be used as a supporter as well. Just remember, he has low health rate. So if you don't play him safely, you can feed the enemy easily. And his skills are non-target and can help the enemy. So Garam is very difficult to play good. But if you are skillful, then Garam can be a very op champion.

Fun Facts about Garam

  • Garam used to be a good friend of Rumble. However, after the event, Rumble regards Garam as a traitor, and now Rumble really hates Garam.
  • Garam doesn't hate Rumble though.
  • Corki, Teemo and Tristana hate Garam for his action.
  • Garam once got arrested and prisoned by Mordekaiser for illegally investigating on Shadow Isles. However, once again, he escaped with Veigar. And that's how they became friends.
  • Garam and Lulu became friends because they share some commons; they both are Yordle mages and exiled from Bandle City. (But no love is involved between those two since I ship Veigar and Lulu)
  • His name and dress are from the Korean culture.
  • His name, Garam (가람), was chosen because it sounds similar to Graham. Ronald Graham is the mathematician who is famous for his humber; the Graham's number.
  • His dress is from the winter hanbok (Korean traditional dress) for men.
  • His iconic shape (also the shape of W) is the Apollonian gasket which is a fractal.
  • Veigar once stated that the Garam's magic power isn't that strong, but he uses it in very peculiar but efficient way.

Okay so. I really like this character! They have an interesting identity in Runeterra - a Freljordle is new and exciting, we haven't seen it before - a cute design, and a very clear design identity.

There are some glaring problems however.

I'm going to break down the kit piece by piece and talk about what I like and what I don't like:

Encryption

Encryption is unhealthy, simple as that. Not necessarily overpowered per se, but very unhealthy for the game. Not being able to see an enemy's stats, summs and runes might seem harmless, but overall it's like going into a guessing game every time you play against them. And if they take unsealed spellbook, it'll be even rougher.

Verdict: Needs to be scrapped.

Trigonometry

I absolutely adore this spell! It's such a neat design! I feel like when the third bullet hits, the three enemies that have been hit should be stunned for maybe ~0.5 seconds? And rather than the enemies inside the resulting triangle taking magic damage proportional to the area, i think it should be something like 100/150/200/250/300% of the damage of the bullet, scaling up with rank.

Verdict: A great basic spell!

Bijection

The way the spell was written confuses me a little, but overall I like it. It's a very tricky ability and the fact that it can be used on allies as well as enemies gives it a lot of utility. I like that you made it so that the choice to switch was in the ally's hands, and not Garam's! It would be very easy to troll people with it otherwise.

Verdict: Pretty good spell, lots of utility.

Decryption

Turning an enemy turret into an allied one is way too strong an ability. I feel like this should be a vision granting ability, something like:

"Garam fires a decrypting bullet in a direction. If it hits an enemy, the bullet deals 30/35/40/45/50 (+60% AP) magic damage and gives Garam access to that enemy's vision radius and the vision radii of all its allies for 1/2/3/4/5 seconds."

Verdict: Has potential, but the turret play is way too strong to be in this kit.

Inverting Fractal

The shape of the spell is cool, but ultimately it just amounts to a large circle with cool patterns inside. Also, this sort of seems like a weaker version of Kindred's ult. I don't really know how to improve it.

Verdict: Has potential, and could do with a revamp. Hard to revamp though.
