[Champ Suggestion] Marja, the Warden of Cold Fire
After grinding Ranked for a whole day I can't stop thinking about League, and I come up with a bunch of champion concepts that pretty much just get thrown out, so I thought I'd start posting them somewhere, even if no one reads them ; w ;
All of the champions which hail from the Freljord are success stories-- they're people who thrive in one of the harshest environments in Runeterra. They've grown stronger from or overcome the punishing cold. So I thought, what about those people who aren't leaders or heroes? What about the ones who struggle and scrape to get by? So Marja was born.
Marja was just a regular girl living under the rule of the pampered Avarosan tribe. She knew little of the Freljord's true nature, rarely venturing from the capital city of Rakelstake to gather firewood from the evergreens. She didn't respect the power of the ice. Why would she, when her father's well-made cabin withstood every blizzard without so much as a creak? And so, when Queen Ashe called forth a contingent of messengers to unite the tribes, she volunteered.
Her mother worried, but Marja wasn't afraid. This mission was no different from gathering firewood to her-- just over a longer distance. She and five others were to confront the peaceful Ursine tribe in the far north, just one of dozens of groups bearing gifts to tribes all over the Freljord. They set out in high spirits, stocked with plenty of rations and all of the survival equipment they could possibly need.
When they crossed the mountains, Marja was stunned by the landscape. There were barely any trees here in the far north, and the few that clung to the barren earth were brittle and grey. She hadn't seen such a hostile-looking place before. While the rest of her little company seemed unbothered, Marja was set on edge. And when the first black clouds swept over the horizon the very next day, she leapt into action. She ordered the bigger and stronger men and women around, making them construct a solid lean-to out of the wind and strip down whole trees for firewood. They laughed at her extreme caution, believing it was unnecessary, but followed her instructions anyway.
The storm raged for four days. All soon agreed that Marja had been right to prepare so thoroughly. Even still, the bitter cold quickly made them very sick. The first of their company died of hypothermia on the last day. Then, although they had eaten through most of their rations, the group decided to press on.
They reached the Ursine tribe without further incident, but their alliance was refused. The triumvirate was confident that they could get by without the help of outsiders, and preferred to be left alone. The messengers were crushed. They began the long trek back to Rakelstake, carrying with them the heavy burdens of hunger, mourning, and failure. As they crossed the mountains once more, however, just as the green valley came back into view, they let their guard down. Another storm struck them suddenly, out of nowhere, burying the mountain pass so the company was stranded.
For nearly two weeks they waited for the snow to melt. Hunger bit into them as surely as the cold. Two closed their eyes and never opened them again. One went off into the wilderness and never returned. And one gave Marja the last of his rations to ensure her survival for just one more day. That night, Marja had a dream. In it, the fire glowed blue, her dead companions surrounded her, and the Ice Witch laughed. When Marja awoke, she had changed.
For more than two months until the snow melted enough for her to escape the pass, Marja did not eat. She did not sleep. She only tended the fire, which had turned an icy shade of blue. As long as it was burning, she lived. She felt nothing, no cold, no hunger. No fear or sadness for her dead friends. When she finally emerged once again into the valley of evergreen trees, she found she could no longer see any colors besides white snow, grey branches, and blue fire.
Marja is a midlaner first and a support second. Her passive, Hunker Down, allows her to farm in lane for long periods unless ganked or bursted down. As such, she counters poke mages like
or
, but is vulnerable to melee assassins like
or
.
** Passive: Hunker Down -** Marja gains increased healing and HP regen by 8% for each Blaze she has currently active. Blazes sacrificed through her E do not count for that heal.
Q: Blaze - Costs 40 mana at all levels, CD 12/10/8/6/4 seconds. Marja conjures a Blaze in a target area. Blazes do not deal damage on initial cast, but damage enemies for 40/45/50/55/60 (+ 20% AP) every second they stand on them. Blazes also grant vision of enemies who walk over them, similar to Zyra's W - Rampant Growth, although they do not go out. Marja must stay in cast range to maintain a Blaze. She can maintain up to 3/3/4/4/5 Blazes, with a cast range of 1000/1250/1500/1750/2000 units.
W: Frostbite - Costs 60/70/80/90/100 mana, CD 8/7.5/7/6.5/6 seconds. Marja selects a Blaze to explode, dealing 60/70/80/90/100 (+ 50% AP) damage to surrounding enemies. Exploded Blazes also leave a circle of frostbitten earth for 3/3.75/4.5/5.25/6 seconds which inflicts Permafrost on enemies which walk over it. Permafrost gradually slows enemies up to 20/25/30/35/40% over 4 seconds and deals equal to 1/2/3/4/5% of enemies' max health each second, even after they leave the circle. Each circle can inflict Permafrost only 1 time per enemy. If an enemy enters a circle while already inflicted with Permafrost, its duration is reset.
E: Sacrifice - Costs 50/55/60/65/70 mana, CD 20/18/16/14/12 seconds. Marja selects a Blaze to sacrifice, removing it from the map to heal herself for 60/70/80/90/100 (+ 40% AP).
R: Winter's Fury - Costs 100/125/150 mana, CD 130/110/90 seconds. Marja puts out every Blaze which is currently active and is granted 1 empowered basic attack for each Blaze. Empowered attacks deal bonus damage 100 at all levels (+ 20/30/40% AP). Surrounding enemies also take 50% splash damage, and Permafrost is inflicted upon each enemy hit. Permafrost's duration is not reset if an enemy is hit with an empowered attack before it is over, but can be reinflicted after it ends. Marja can use her other abilities while Winter's Fury is active, but Winter's Fury will not go on cooldown until each empowered attack has been used.
It may be tempting to play Marja as an AP tank, with her crazy HP regen passive and self heal, especially with
granting her 75% scaling on her E at max Blazes (if I've done the math right). However, there are drawbacks to this build. Even with
+
, she would have virtually no damage and be sacrificing significant defense in favor of utility.
Marja shines as a midlaner who is allowed to farm into mid-late game and massively outscale her opponents. Taking
or
would allow her to stay on the map pretty much indefinitely until her W and R just get too huge to ignore. A few well-placed Blazes could act as wards as she split pushes, or she could even roam lanes and shred bot with her ult. She would have great synergy with ccing supports like
and
, as she could plant a Blaze on top of their slows/stuns to deal a bit of extra damage before exploding it with her W.
The percentage scaling on her ultimate should be essential to Marja's kit. It provides two huge power spikes at levels 11 and 16, so Marja has to make sure to hit them before anybody else and take advantage of them right away. If she successfully does this, she'll be able to carry teamfights in late game. If she doesn't, well. Guess it's back to farming for her.
Base Stats Health: 551 - 1860 (+77) HP5: 7.8 - 18 (+0.6) Mana: 380 - 1400 (+60) MP5: 8.5 - 23.8 (+0.9) Range: 575 Atk Dmg: 56.6 - 111 (+3.2) Atk Spd: .625 - .853 (+2.11%) Armor: 26.1 - 80.5 (+3.2) Mag Res: 30 Mov Spd: 335
I'm not great at the math aspect of things, and I've never done this before, so I might have made her totally broken on accident somehow. But I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts! Thanks!!
