I am not sure what the technical hurdles would be to set this up, but would an option (turned off by default though) to have notifications sent to your e-mail whenever you receive a message in "My Updates" be something that users would like?
I know I would. Perhaps with some additional flexibility in terms of threads you're "following", or have favorited (upvoted).

There are also a lot of easy web tools that would help you do this. I noticed that you guys already use S3. Give SES a spin? I'd really like this feature.
