What is a downvote?

Can someone explain to me an appropriate situation to downvote a comment and why is it an option? Thus far, it seems as though I'm downvoted simply because people don't agree with me.

Disagree = downvote?

There is a variety of reasons.

  • Disagree with the OP
  • Thread is just a repost fishing for upvotes
  • OP is trolling
  • Spam
  • OP is offensive
  • OP did no research before making claims
  • OP is a known troll, even if this one post is legitimate
  • Downvoter wants his thread to look better by downvoting those around it

So on and so forth. Not all are very good reasons, but some are. The real problem is when someone can't accept that his idea isn't liked and just calls all the downvoters trolls and idiots.

Downvote is the most ignorant and shortsighted design in message boards ever created. Any incompetent person can instantly display their frustration with themselves and with you by the click of a button. Explain myself? Never, downvote. Reason with you? Never, downvote. Upset my weak sensibilities? Downvote. The system is tragically hilarious.
