Lock Older Posts on Help and Support Forums
This is actually a two-step approach, but implementing even one of them would go a long way.
I feel that a post in the Help and Support forum should lock in one of two scenarios:
- If it hasn't had a response in over x days (30?)
- If the original posters issue has been resolved
Reasoning:
-
It's impossible to troubleshoot thirty people shouting "ME TOO" on a post. Similar symptoms do not come from the same root cause, but a lot of people in H+S don't realise this. As such, threads get unruly, necrobumped, and people just don't get their issue resolved
-
If the Original Posters issue is fixed, there should be no further action needed on the post. It should highlight who fixed/what fixed it, and close up - anyone else still having issues should then make their own thread for troubleshooting
-
Fixes for issues months ago may no longer work, or the error showing nowadays could be caused by something entirely different
Benefits:
- Less necrobumping old posts
- Higher rate of resolution (less people "ME TOO"ing = easier troubleshooting for the OP)
- Easier identification of trending issues (Rather than the necrobumped posts from years ago)
- Cleaner forum
I certainly don't think the 30 day lock would be a problem - having people be able to close their own resolved threads may be a tougher one, however if it's like any other forum software, you should be able to set the OP to have locking rights to their own thread - this coupled with the 30 day lock would greatly increase the Quality of Life in that forum :-)
