You banning me over and over when I'm only part of the issue isn't doing a fucking thing, so why not just bring back permanent chat restrictions?
First off, you aren't part of the issue, you are the issue.
Second, permanent chat restrictions are a bad idea overall, particularly because they've already tried indefinitely scaling Chat Restrictions, and that only lead to people resorting to gameplay trolling and feeding to express their displeasure at their teammates/matches.
Inevitably, a majority of the cases of permanent chat restrictions would simply end in permanent bans regardless.
Another issue, of course, (one that's often ignored, I've found), is that the punishment system, up until the Permanent Ban, is meant to encourage players to reform. The punishment tells them that their conduct was against the rules, and they're expected to shape up afterwards.
And, through their prior experiences with punishing players, Riot has developed four tiers of punishment (disregarding ID bans, shield bans, or chargeback bans) for players to be punished by, should they break the rules. For chat toxicity, it is as follows:
- 10-game Chat Restriction - For consistent minor negativity/flame, or for severe outbursts that very clearly are well over the line.
- 25-game Chat Restriction - For consistent negativity/outbursts beyond the first punishment.
- 14-day Suspension - For players who very consistently break the rules, follows a 25-game Chat Restriction. Also the first punishment people will receive for hate speech/encouragements of self harm.
- Permanent Ban - Essentially, the last punishment players will receive. Any toxicity, minor or major, following a 14-day ban will result in this level of punishment, with no hope or chance to recover.
When people recommend a "Permanent Chat Restriction" sort of thing, I often see that they have been punished in one way or another, the majority of those cases being 14-day or permanent bans, and they try to play off their ban as though "if (I) got a permanent chat restriction I wouldn't have been banned" or "It's not fair to ban people for chat".
What everyone seems to overlook is the fact that, if people are getting banned for chat, it's clear that they're ignoring the warnings that the 10-game and 25-game chat restrictions are meant to be. So, if they don't learn from a 10-game chat restriction, and don't learn from a 25-game chat restriction...What exactly are they going to learn from a permanent chat restriction?
My money, of course, is on "nothing at all".
And since the punishment system is meant to either give players a nudge to reform themselves and avoid breaking the rules in the future, or get rid of players who simply don't want to - and that permanent chat restrictions would simply encourage being lazy and toxic over actually obeying the rules, and that the majority of the cases prior have led to trolling and feeding...
I don't see permanent chat restrictions ever being a thing.
If you get banned, you are the problem - not a part of it, but the whole of it. And with that said, I'm going to follow-up on this talking about the actual issue - I just wanted to clear up some relevant information.
