I don't get why a player's only means of defending theirself is by muting them.

It's kind of silly really, in reality, if someone was in your face calling you racial slurs/telling you to kill yourself/making you feel like utter dog shit, 90% of people wouldn't just walk away, they would have a word with them. Yes, of course Riot has their rules, but I don't get a single bit of satisfaction from reporting the damn player who flamed me all game. Some people don't take bullying the same as others, some have to have their word with it in order to keep their sanity, like me for example. Muting doesn't do a damn thing for me, wanna know why? Because I'll type "muted" in chat and I still see them constantly talking shit. Who likes knowing that someone is talking crap behind your back and all you can do is nothing? It's blasphemy and a shit system. I'm sorry, but I have to much god damn respect for myself to let someone down talk me like I'm an animal, and I'm sure a ton of people can agree with me.

Yeah in the real world, you can't mute people if someone is being a shit head that gives you the right to be a shit head to, right? No the real world works pretty much the same way regardless who starts shit, both go down

Mute report move on, go down to their level you are just another shit head risking your account to prove another shit head that you're a bigger shit head

I don't how hard it is just to mute and report the player. Just like I don't understand the complexity of players not reading the Term of Use, and disregarding everything the Summoner's Code says. I mean, don't like what they're saying? Mute. Are they harassing you? Mute. But instead, players feel like they can justify their actions just because they're being insulted or harassed. And those players are missing the important thing. The game itself. How are you going to win or play the game if you're just going type through it all? Your team doesn't want to see you endlessly defending yourself. They want to win. They want to see an effort. Your team doesn't play this game for the drama.

** It's a video game. Not a chatroom. ** No one is here to see someone stand up to the big bad wolf by typing to them because they're insulted. They want to see a team player mute that individual and CONTINUE to play and TRY to win. Not a keyboard warrior.

And you type back to the offensive player endlessly isn't going help your case. It isn't changing the fact that your enemies are playing to win as you continue to type back and forth, back and forth. While your team sits there wishing you'd just play the game. And that is why there are rules. That's why the system exists. That's why in the code of conduct you're not supposed to argue or fight back.

Mute. Report. Move on.

Because it's not about you vs. them, it's about the entire team. If you take the time to "defend yourself", you're distracting at LEAST two of your team from focusing on the game, and contributing to an ongoing problem. And "muted" is passive-aggressive baiting bullshit that you should cut out as well, because all it is is a jab at the offending player. You want to really shut down harassment? Say nothing at all. It's really that simple.

Internet trolls and flamers are pussies. I have respect for myself as well, but I also have enough self-confidence to not spend too much time dwelling on what a pussy anonymously utters about me behind a screen on the other side of the world.

Completely agree, and I don't care if I'm downvoted again -- being upvoted is not as important as voicing your opinion.

I received a chat restriction before, and the chat logs (2) that were posted had 1 where I had little to no negativity, and the second had me asking everyone to report a player who was severely trolling the game (feeding, afking, griefing)... you can't "just mute" someone who is trolling and refuses to allow a surrender vote to pass to prolong their trolling.

Apparently, we are to be paragons, saints, and reform others through our positive behaviour. I'm sorry, but I'm not Jesus.. I can't just turn the other cheek. I won't insult them, I won't throw out any racial slurs or attack them.. whatever. But why we cannot say anything in our own defense is beyond me.

It is what it is. I've already had 2 chat restrictions due to extremely toxic teammates trying to scapegoat me, etc.

Now, I find myself typing stuff in chat, then pressing ESC instead of enter. I ignore them until the end and report, hoping that something is actually done about these players. But ya... the punishment system could really be improved.

Its what I call Riot's "bend over and take it policy" Unlike the real world where we are taught to stand up for ourselves, we are just expected to take it in LOL, The people who defend themselves are usually the quickest to lose their accounts....><

Escheton11/17/2017, 4:11:00 AM3 votes

Don't say "muted". Just mute and move on. Or laugh. Because damn, how can you remotely respect them? Or what they say. What does god have to do with this btw? How is it blasphemic?

MysterQ11/17/2017, 4:15:43 AM3 votes

WRONG.

The only way a player can defend himself is by muting HIMSELF. It feels bad when you have to not type anything or else you can get punished.

Mindspeaker11/17/2017, 4:42:12 AM3 votes

OP if you respond to them on their level you just as immature and no less toxic than they are you are answering negativity with negativity and that is why anyone who does "react" and "defend" themselves deserves to be punished the exact same way as the person they were reacting to.

Even saying "muted" is unnecessary.

That's not "too much self respect" you have, it's "too much pride".

Walking away from the fight (while chuckling know that they will get punished) takes more courage and self control than counter attacking.

Someone being toxic is trying to get at you. They WANT to get a rise out of you, to make you argue with them so they can continue to harass you. Muting them and not saying ANYTHING to them is quite literally the BEST way to get back at a toxic player.

Krigjer11/17/2017, 4:09:13 AM2 votes

While I agree with you.. Really, I'm the type of person to point out faults in someone's logic and if they continue to berate me, THEN I'll walk away. (Example. Teamfight breaks out, mid player accuses me of abandoning the team and being too afraid to go in. I explain I got chased out by their jungle that flanked. If they still fail to understand it wasn't directly my fault, I call them blind, mute and move on. )

BUT I think a lot of what Riot doesn't like is when people start to trade insults for insults, and slurs for slurs. There's a difference between defending yourself and outright being toxic in retaliation. To keep people from getting to that level of anger, they just recommend muting from the getgo.

CooL Ice Tea11/17/2017, 7:09:58 AM1 votes

Your scenario is in the open world. Now think about a starbucks were someone insults you and you insult him back. The owner will throw you both out so the other customers won't get bothered.

This game is a business, jerks will get thrown out since the owner want's the major part to be happy.

TrulyBland11/17/2017, 2:21:42 PM1 votes

How about because it literally is the only means of defending yourself? I'm not talking about what is allowed here, I'm talking about what is possible. Nobody in the entire history of the internet has ever gone "Omg, you flamed me so good, I think I'm going to stop flaming you now because you are so intimidating" except maybe sarcastically.

Seriously, answer me this: How is retaliating against a flamer helpful in any way other than venting? How does it "defend" you from further attacks? And just to be clear here: It's retaliation that is punished.

Xidphel11/17/2017, 5:41:21 PM1 votes

Because muting prevents all chat from someone from reaching you and you don't need to defend yourself if there's no one to defend yourself from.

HalcyonDweller11/17/2017, 5:49:47 PM1 votes

You use an open world example, somebody yelling at you in the street or a bar, but that is not applicable here.

League is a competitive game, and just like in other competitive games (such as soccer/futbol and basketball), arguing with the other players detracts from the fun of the game for everybody.

Additionally, arguing with somebody who is trying to fight you will only lead to them acting even worse because by responding you show them that they can get a response out of you if they keep at it.

tldr; it reduces the fun for everyone, and it exacerbates the behavior of the aggressor.

This is why it is considered punishable to flame back. If you must say something, you can always say "I did not do those things," or "I'm not feeding" and then mute them. Thus you have defended your honor and also removed yourself from the situation without having to be exposed to any further abuse from them.

Negativity11/17/2017, 5:45:39 AM1 votes

This ain't real life bub you can't use logic from real life encounters to justify reasons on a game 1: real life you can't always just ignore 2: online games u press button, moron is gone forever. Obviously riot can follow whatever they want on this policy because the online world is much simpler than real life.

Silent Gravity11/17/2017, 9:01:55 PM1 votes

If someone was ranting in your face in meatspace, one of the exaggerated responses available would be to sew their mouth shut so they couldn't talk to you any more.

That's muting.

If someone was spewing racial slurs in your face in meatspace, one of the exaggerated responses available would be to put them in a coma for two weeks.

That's reporting, since that's a 14 day ban.

Mute and report. It's a massively exaggerated response.
