If KYS is 14 day, all flaming should be 14-day too

Let's examine the logic here, which is based on an extremely unlikely hypothetical scenario:

  1. Person A is borderline suicidal and decides to play League to unwind. We can safely assume person A is also stupid, since the League community is the most cancerous hateful collection of degenerates outside of 4chan.
  2. Person B rages hardcore at person A, drops the magic voldemort-phrase KYS.
  3. Person A, so distraught by three letters on a computer screen, grabs a knife and ends it all.

If this has ever been documented to happen in the history of ever, please drop me a link, because I'm having trouble believing that something that petty and insignificant would push someone over the edge. Such a hypothetical person is likely to be so messed up that they would find an excuse in a complete vacuum. People don't get to that point by playing games. Some seriously fucked up stuff has to happen to them, or their neurochemistry has to be completely imbalanced. Any effect an interaction with a stranger online would have on such an individual could also be caused by any number of things in their life, and as such I find assigning blame for what may or may not happen to person B absolutely unfair, since he has no idea as to person A's mental state and KYS has become a bit of a meme phrase. To me, it just means fuck you, and in almost every situation that's how it should be taken. I don't think very many people actually mean it, and if they did, they'd go out of their way to remove all doubt. Now, if person A confesses his feelings and person B ENCOURAGES him, that's another story, and I'd be much more willing to endorse scorched-earth punishment, cause that's fucked, yo.

But let's take this a step further. Let's assume our hypothetical person is somehow even MORE unstable and MORE distraught.

  1. Person A is RAZOR'S EDGE borderline suicidal and decides to play League to unwind.
  2. Person B rages hardcore at person A, but does not say KYS or any other banphrase, and merely tells him that he's a piece of shit that should have been aborted. So, your standard everyday flame.
  3. Person A, so distraught by these soul-rending insults from a complete stranger, grabs a knife and ends it all.

I'm having trouble differentiating these scenarios logically. If KYS is supposed to have some effect on suicidal people, it follows that standard flaming also would have an effect. And depending on the degree of suicidality, which again the way the flamer has no clue about, you could theoretically trigger a similar reaction in our poor fellow with just about any negative interaction under the sun. So, following this train of thought, if KYS should be an instant 14 day, shouldn't any flaming, no matter how minor, carry the same punishment, since it has that (in my opinion, similar) chance of triggering someone past the point of no return?

You're assuming all things that nudge someone towards suicide have the same impact. That's not so.

I have had to spend a sleepless night holding someone back from committing suicide. While there where many things leading up to that moment, the trigger was someone on the other team telling them "kys soraka". Other sorts of low level flame may have been mentioned, I don't recall, but that was the one that hit home.

So no, I don't think all flame needs to be treated as harshly as "KYS" is, and I fully agree with "KYS" earning 14 day bans.

When you edit a part of the post you should state what you have edited. That way when people use that part as an argument you can't just change it to make them seem bad.

The original title was: 'KYS should not be an instant 14 day', hence why some people are commenting on it.

There isn't ever a good reason to tell people to kill themselves?

Telling somebody to kill themselves can be considered extremely fucked up regardless of whether they act upon it.

Because the very concept of saying "kill yourself" to another human being because you got mad at lights on a screen is detestable.

It should be 1 month and any reiteration should follow up in a permanent ban.

You can wish others diarreha as much as you want, no need to bring suicide in the matter.

I'm depressed and I got banned for saying kys.I found that funny but yeah its the same as any kind of flame and other flaming should be an instant 14 day ban by that logic.

People ask why d5 is so toxic, this is why.

seriously you can accuse OP of ad hominem but almost all the upvoted comments have not addressed his arguments in any way. which is why he is entitled to ad hominem because he is fighting fire with fire
