Revenge & Punishment Or Why should Riot be more transparent about report, suspensions and bans
This is not a 19th century novel by a Russian author. It is just my take on it and if some wording isn't fitting, I apologize as English isn't my native language (nor even my second language).
Revenge is about wishing ill to someone who caused you wrong. I understand it's not an sentiment that should be encouraged and it would be way better to let go and move on. This reasoning that it's better to let go is probably one of the reason why Riot doesn't care so much about the feedback it gives us (other reasons are probably that it would be time/ressource consuming).
Punishment on the other hand is something very different, it's about
- deterring wrongdoers from re-engaging in the activity they were punished for
- deterring the public at large from engaging in such activities.
The first point may be achieved ("78% of the players punished in the Tribunal improve their behavior and are never punished again") but it doesn't do anything for the second point. And, by not making public and or easily available the information regarding the punishments, it spread a sentiment of impunity in the community.
I for instance have my occasional game where my behavior is questionnable. I don't troll hard nor flame hard (i don't threathen to kill, rape and eat their family in various order), but i have a couple of non constructive remark here and there, some sarcasm and even some mild flame (i only threaten to kill their family, no raping nor eating involved - kappa).
But I have absolutely no fear of being suspended or banned, my feeling is that there is such a backlog of really toxic players that my occasional lapse of judgement isn't going to get me in trouble. I don't see anything happening to them, so I guess nothing is going to happen to me
And sure I try to improve on that cause i love to win and "Players who follow the Summoner's Code win 27% more games." But i'm not deterred by the system in place, it's only because i'm a civil person and because i try my best to show some maturity.
I don't think that a climat of fear akin to pre-war germany (or any totalitarian system for that matter) is the way to go but like in real life, judicial system are not only about outcasting wrongdoers, it's also about setting example of what is acceptable and what is not.
Think about it, if your behaviour is somewhat trollish/flamish in 10% of your game, it means that if everyone act as you do there is a troll in every single game and lords as you all know, some mild tolling - flaming can awaken the inner troll in some people who transform in full fledged super toxic totally obnoxious people.
And that brings us back to the point about revenge. That will to cause ill to people doing us wrong, is fostered by our lack of confidence in the system and our feeling that it is up to us to bring them harm cause the system won't.
TL;DR : Not knowing about punishment brings us to conclude there is none which has 2 unintended consequences :
- Emergence of private justice (basically people trolling the troll / flaming the flamer, which is basically just making it worst)
- A sentiment of impunity (If i flame once every now and then It's not that bad, I'm still above average and i won't get caught anyway)
