for example, someone calling "gg noob mid ff at 20" because you gave first blood, then proceeds to give you the classic question mark ping spam all game whilst flaming about how bad you are. you then get pissed and say "stfu stop flaming me twat" and get punished for that. by no means is telling someone to "stfu twat" an appropriate thing to say, but it was provoked, in self defense.
Both players are wrong in this scenario, and both could be punished by the system. If the one provoking you got away with no punishment, then most likely it is simply because he is not like this frequently enough for punishment while you are. It typically takes many games of consistent negative behavior to get punished.
It's not self-defense. It's you retaliating back in an equally assholish way. What you said is also arguably worse. Both of you deserve the punishment.
The best thing to do is to do absolutely nothing. They want you to respond, to get angry. If that happens mute them immediately because it will tilt you which will only hurt your performance. Just mute them and try your best. As for the spam pinging.. I wish there was a way to mute just that single player spamming but you can always go to settings and mute pings in game. Hope this helps!
This whole thing about how "retaliation works IRL"... yeah it does. Some tries to assault you, you knock them out and you are safe and they likely go to jail. Here, in League and in other games retaliation is not okay, it only makes things worse as two assholes are worse than one. Just ignore and report.
