I don't care how well they do or how much they want to win, if my support picks Yasuo there should be some form of punishment. You obviously are not trying your hardest if you pick a champion unfit for that position.
Where does it stop?
A few patches ago Rumble mid would have been trolling. A half-season ago Aatrox mid would have been trolling. Turns out those are sometimes actually GREAT picks.
What's the specific line between "acceptably off-role" and "trolling?"
Champ familiarity and comfort > meta picks all the way.
If he is a 1 trick and understands his limits, he'll be able to perform better than someone whom can't land skill shots, going in at the wrong times or playing scared all the time.
Riot does not, and will not ever enforce a meta. I love these "ZOMG IT'S RANKED" posts.
I agree it kinda scares me when people make weird picks in ranked. But it can work. I once had this Soraka jungle in a ranked match and we won eventually so yeh..

My favorite thing getting auto filled support no body wants to trade. Sometimes go zac support it works kinda.
I play a bunch of crap support, probably more than an actual "support" but of course I'm pretty low ranked.
Things that have worked fairly well: AP Shyv, Quinn, Garen, Mundo, Nas (AP or AD) Things that didn't work well: GP, Trist, Elise
