Good lord, I've been in caitlyn's shoes. I've had games where my support doesn't even show up to lane until 5 min in and then I've gotten flamed by my entire team for being behind in cs. Yeah, that was the last time I ever played ADC. Alistars starting item reduces his lane presence to an extremely minimal degree. Not only does he not have the survivability to go in to even use his support item, he doesn't even have the regen to stay in lane against the Brand. But then again no one has any clue how this game is going since all we see are chat logs.
I can understand completely why the cait got pissed. Toxic players aren't a result of genetics or personality traits, its a result of the actions others take around them. I would be pissed as all hell if I was that caitlyn. I wouldn't want to queue into a game just to have some metamancer support ruin my game as well as his own. I hate having my time wasted by something outside of my control, and when I queue up for a game in league of legends I do it with the assumption that everyone on my team will have the inclination to win the game (I only play ranked so this SHOULD be a given).
Here is my criticism on this whole verdict board thing. You only see what people type in game, you have no idea what the context behind it is. The alistar could have been 0-3 and inting by the time cait first typed "this lane is a loss." You don't know the situation in which these players are in, therefore you can't picture how the game is going. You don't know whether the enemy team is 24-3 or vice versa, you just cant tell from chat logs alone. Personally I think its wrong to just show the chat logs without showing the game itself. when you look at everyone else on caits team they were toxic too, why are they not getting reported? Punishing people for being toxic is such a horrible thing to spend resources on. It doesn't fix the underlying problem behind toxicity. toxicity will only occur if player A is being negatively affected by Player B. At the end of the game Player A will not care anymore about player B, and will most likely not be toxic towards others. The only time where reporting Player A would be justifiable would be when he takes it out on unrelated people. oh, and that underlying problem behind toxicity... That can't be fixed either. That would involve directly affecting how people play the game, which is also a really crappy thing for riot to do. You can't just stop toxic players from being toxic either, toxic players are just normal people who get annoyed when someone does something outside of their control that negatively affects the toxic player. Do you think people are just not gonna get pissed when someone on their team runs into the opposing team 7 times for no reason? The only acceptable measure to take against toxicity in my mind are chat bans and nothing else. The fact that you can get banned from a game entirely for just typing things that someone may or may not find offensive is worrying to me. Normal people have problems with the way others act, and as a result they say rude things to each other. I would much rather people take their aggression out on the internet to complete strangers rather than have them take it out in real life in ways that may not just be verbal.
Personally I just don't think there is enough information in just the chat logs to form any sort of conclusion. Sure cait was toxic but then again so was the rest of her team. She took it all out on the person who was negatively affecting her and didn't take it out on anyone else who wasn't involved, and It wasn't even over something unrelated to her, the support affects the way the ADC has to play the game, so It is understandable why she would feel that way over her support if her support wasn't performing the way she needed them to. And this works both ways as well, its caits fault for not performing the way the Alistar needed her to perform in lane, however, I cannot directly see who negatively affected the lane the most since there is no video, only a chat log.
This really just seems like an instance of toxicity that comes from the way a teammate is playing the game. I find that understandable to be honest. I've played about 2000 ranked games in my 3 years of playing the game and I get pissed off at the way my teammates play as well. Not once have I ever AFK'ed (unless my ISP decides to do that for me ( god I hate charter communications) ) or inted because of how my teammates have played, I still play the game because I want to win, and toxic players still want to win as well, if they didn't then they would be inters or afk'ers, which is completely different than just being toxic. Hell, that cait could have gone afk 6 min in but we don't know, in that case it would be cut and dry ban for afking.
Anyway, that's just my ramblings on toxicity as a whole. I just want this to sit on your mind next time you queue up for a game, If you get into the wrong game with the wrong people, and say the wrong phrase that one of them finds offensive, you can get a 14 day suspension. Doesn't matter how long you have played the game, it only matters the one match that you finally snap because of your teammates.
