Exploiting Positional Matchmaking -- A Story, by Ript

Story Time!

Once upon a time, on the Champion Selection screen, a Top-Main got auto-filled to support. Now, this Top-Main has a personal vendetta against the player who was assigned the Top role for two reasons:

  1. He "stole" Top Lane
  2. Our Top Laner picked Teemo

So, the Top-Main takes it upon himself to teach Teemo a lesson. He picks Singed as a support, takes summoner 6 and summoner 12 and begins to proxy Teemo's lane between T1/T2 turrets. Teemo now gets very little cs and is behind in levels, because he's not gaining experience. Not only that, but Singed is now feeding their Top and Jungler kills, worsening Teemo's disadvantage. Teemo decides to be the bigger person, without toxicity or vulgar commentary, and go bottom to fill the support role, so that Singed can have top all to himself.

Too little, too late.
Singed vs. Teemo

Singed follows him to bot and begins to proxy bot as well, so now our ADC is not gaining gold or experience, either. Jhin was actually doing quite well for being 2v1 (due to some beautiful ganking,_ cough cough_) and the game was looking rather promising, despite Singed's efforts. However, Singed has now thrown whatever small lead our ADC had gained and the game is now spiraling out of control.

Singed, at one point, asked Teemo, "You still gonna pick Teemo Top, now?" Teemo calmly replied, "Yes, because I enjoy playing Teemo."

While I was impressed that Teemo was able to keep his composure, unlike most of this community would have, it does frustrate me that the current ranked system has a wide-open window for exploiting the LP Splash Loss system for undesirable roles. Singed doesn't care about his Support role and will only lose a couple LP on his main role if he loses, so there's really nothing to deter him from "Teaching Teemo a Lesson."

I genuinely hope that individual got all 9 reports that were talked about in All Chat and finds himself unable to play for awhile... And while I don't wish any harm on that person, I do hope he is stricken with minor inconveniences for the rest of his life - such as having his toast always burn no matter how long it goes in the toaster.

I also hope that there is a remedy for this issue. As 4 other, entirely innocent, players lost LP due to one incredibly immature and mentally/emotionally unstable individual's toxic behavior.

How the hell does this have anything to do with matchmaking? Players like that have always existed since the implementation of ranked role selection (team builder). And they always will exist.

I like the system and I'm sure it'll grow to be better. One thing I would really like is for the system to detect lane switches. So in this example it would see the singed was a top and not support player and thus would lose top lp which he actually cares about

This seems like a good time to report directly to Riot Support on the matter. Also only 1 report is needed after the game, but following it up with a Riot Support ticket.. expedites the process.

Well then I don't know what to tell you. If you think his disrespectful method of rhetoric is normal, then i feel sorry for you that you don't know what a respectful conversation looks like.

I think the pro's of positional match making definitely outweigh the cons.

Theres nothing more frustrating than having "that" mid laner who hit plat playing janna support and now doesn't care about climbing so he's playing whatever he wants in ranked, while his csing/mechanics in other roles are silver at best.

I think purposely griefing even once when auto filed should result in huge LP losses in every role. Unfortunately riot lacks the technology to consistently catch griefers. And realistically, I can't think of a way for them to do anything about them. We just have to settle for what we have now, its functionally decent.

I agree, this is ridiculous. This behavior is something that is certainly a punishable offence.

Not that it matters, but I like to mention it wherever I go, as a fiscal conservative, I believe words shouldn't be punished through action since that impacts the guilty player feasibly over something purely conceptual. That is an eye for two eyes, so to speak. That has nothing to do with this though. Riot wouldn't be in the wrong to administer a quick 5 game low priority Q to the account after manually investigating the game. Since he did actively go out of his way to aid the enemy team and troll his own. Which is a completely different thing. That would be a good eye for an eye type of response.

I think that the new role ranked system is good though, since it helps us better balance the game, and more fairly balance teams too. Less auto-fills. Since maining a role now has more significance. Support mains are a commodity once again. More valued. When people see support mains making it past gold often, they want to main it. And if Riot sees that, they can either nerf or buff a role. Like marksman champions currently are under valued, since mages seem to fulfill that role. Letting a talon, or zed go mid. And a heimer, morde, veigar adc bottom. Perhaps Riot will see the change and rework the way Mid lane works, maybe balance surviveability with their damage, have top laners tanky again i.e. able to survive a full minute in a team fight, and make ADC's worth peeling for again. But that's my two cents.

I don't believe this forum represents our community but rather a vocal minority who is so fervent in their fervor as to flip through behavior tabs after a game with a toxic player telling them they can't get their accounts unbanned because they're mad. My honest opinion; take to reddit with it. More of our people are there than here.

Yeah... This is not surprising. Though it is cool that the person was cool about it. There were immediate concerns about this when it was suggested and Riot's response was that they would have something in place to fix it. As usual, this is false and the trolls are further rewarded for trolling.

i'd rather go back to season 1 matchmaking. No more picking roles. no more "divisions" just mmr and you ask for your role and hope people are kind if not you fill to win

I don't usually sound desperate or write in all caps but here comes: RIOT PLEASE REVERT POSITIONAL MATCHMAKING !!!! :((((((((

AFAIK this is absolutely true. I can see how easy it might be to int without a care, as splash LP only degrades a small amount to other positions. Riot spoke about changing lanes in game/champ select, but never fully opened the subject and its issues. In the season 9 video they posted is what i remember them talking about. I haven't had these issues yet but I'm sure it's coming.

Nothing is going to stop assholes from being assholes. We saw the exact same thing happen last season.
