Sometimes an auto ban, sometimes not?

Okay... so we know that certain phrases supposedly give auto 14-day bans. Kys, n-word, f##, etc.

However I've had two instances in the past week where a player has said "kys," I've reported them for the right reason after game, and checked their account later and find they have more matches played after that one.

Not really understanding why some people get auto bans for this while some don't. Some of the auto bans I've seen only say this phrase once.

I can't give you full answer on this, neither can anybody else. We know that hate speech is an instant 2 week ban because we have some confirmation from riot members and moderators on this one. We know that certain people get punished and certain people do not.

The problem is that we don't exactly know how the instant punishment system works. It is kept a deliberate secret from all players. The location is a secret, the detection method is a secret and the self improving part is kept a secret. We don't know how it checks and how people get banned and not banned. If you want to I can make a rough estimation of how this system checks but nobody on this boards can exactly answer why this system works or doesn't work.

You might get some answers that guess how he didn't get punished, but nobody except for the makers of the system can find out why he wasn't banned.

Best answer I can offer is that, based on what I've seen, the system does its best to offer some leniency to allow for tilt and other extenuating circumstances. "kys" is a unique phrase in League in that it can result in an escalated punishment, but on the other hand, it's an acronym and, last I checked, not even picked up by the censors in the game.

Riot won't tell us the precise way that the system evaluates logs for fear of encouraging the circumvention of those evaluations, but if I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that "kys" alone won't trigger a punishment, but IS grounds for an escalating punishment if it's PART of an otherwise toxic chat log. Again, just guessing here.

It's certainly not as consistently punished as racial or homophobic slurs.

Don't take any truth about the system at face value.

No no nope no no. Autoban system is pure and unadulterated laziness. Autobans can't take all aspects of what happens into account. Sometimes you just have a bad game and die a lot. That isn't intentional feeding, that's LIFE, get over it. Whoever thought up the autoban system should be auto fired.
