"Defending yourself" from toxic people is like getting mad at the rain for being wet

Deep Terror Nami·2/7/2016, 7:42:53 PM·36 votes·3,598 views

You can't stop the rain from doing what it does.

It's going to fall, and you're going to get wet. Becoming self-destructive and yelling at it won't stop the rain; all it will do is piss off the neighbors.

Just grab an umbrella and open it.

  • Rain = Troll
  • Getting wet = being trolled
  • Piss off the neighbors = annoy all the other players
  • Umbrella = mute and report functions

You can't stop the rain from falling. Not in real life, unless you are some wizard.

You can top the trolls from trolling.

I like how this metaphor portrays trolls as something less than human. It's just the rain. Get an umbrella. Ha. Too bad they can still ruin games and waste half an hour of your life or more. But bad weather can do worse than that, so I suppose it's appropriate.

idk i live where it rains a lot , we have roof's and clothes.... but i totally agree with what you mean....

we can only control ourselves.... we cannot control the actions of others, once we accept this we can accept that our response to trolls is at our discretion....

i can only get mad if i let myself get mad, you cannot make me mad

ya, obviously harder to put into practice than type out... but i like the thought +1 from me man, stay positive

p.s. Sona love

Illogical. Rain is wet. It's one of the defining characteristics of rain. Rain contains water. Water is what it is. Neither rain nor water are sentient and able to make choices about themselves.

Toxic players choose to be toxic. I can choose to dislike people who make the choice to only be toxic.

Rain won't do that to me. Nor can it.

LaughingStapler2/7/2016, 11:08:01 PM4 votes

Defending yourself doesn't mean being toxic though. You can simply calmly explain the situation. It may be futile but it shouldn't be against any rule.

TrulyBland2/7/2016, 7:44:48 PM4 votes

That... is actually a pretty good analogy. Minus the fact that it's a magic umbrella, that might even prevent that particular rain from annoying other people in the future.

Surgespace2/8/2016, 4:48:35 AM2 votes

Honestly I wish it was that easy for me

When I read this analogy it's seems all good, but for me I see rain as a little bit of toxicity or someone who's just bad ( just played a game with a full AP fevor of battle thresh support who said he can't use R in fights it "waste" too much time..actually)

However this is how it feels like to me personally.

Hurricane = troll Getting trolled = being in a hurricane

Yelling about the hurricane = notifying your neighbors of the danger he poses to the ranked community and tell them to send word to family and friends to defend against the hurricane

Umbrella = mute and report functions

its sad that this thread had to be made AGAIN. but yea i understand it, last few threads were all about "rigged system got banned because im not allowed to defend myself, im american i have free speech bla bla bla"

Pomponio7322/7/2016, 7:48:30 PM2 votes

Everyone one is different me personaly am a fighter so i never ran away from conflict but someone who doesnt fight or who has never fought would probly stay away from confict itsa matter of personality thats all obviously riot dont like me thats why i got perma banned but i would also say to that most of riots players are probly alot nerdier and weaker physicly than me so i guess i cn understand coming from the point of view the scared run away from conflict way of looking at it

Its funny cause whenever I bring up a metaphor like that to proof the system wrong, you cant compare a game to real life. Flawless logic c:

ModUlanopo2/9/2016, 2:57:05 AM2 votes

Timmy, Tommy and Sarah are trapped in an elevator. Timmy loses his temper and soils himself. Tommy gets angry at the smell and decides to retaliate by soiling himself. Now Sarah is trapped with two smelly idiots. Don’t be Timmy or Tommy. Stop ****ing your pants.

This one is mine. :)

GRVet3ran0sS2/8/2016, 3:35:40 PM1 votes

Even if you use the umbrella you will get wet.

Samus722/9/2016, 2:59:41 AM1 votes

I will take the stairs from now on.

Zhire2/7/2016, 8:15:55 PM1 votes

I liked the analogy.

DarkLiquidDeath2/7/2016, 9:05:02 PM1 votes

Okay, Javert

Myrmiron2/7/2016, 9:27:29 PM1 votes

Or you can make angry posts on the boards, starting with "I got banned and it's unfair!!!1!".

iHerring2/7/2016, 11:52:17 PM1 votes

You're right, defending ourselves has never worked against those damn clouds. Maybe it's time we finally went on the attack!

Banuvan2/8/2016, 12:14:08 AM1 votes

Responding to trolls is worse than being a troll in Riots eyes. Lyte says you are more toxic than they are so best to just mute everybody at the beginning and play the game.

Roguestoney2/8/2016, 12:15:10 AM1 votes

I've always likes your posts Nami.

High52/8/2016, 2:27:56 AM1 votes

Umbrella and mute works the best.

Mistress Madoka2/8/2016, 3:26:03 AM1 votes

I prefer to think of it as this

The troll - A Troll/Ogre/Goblin You - A Treasure Chest Your Reaction - Delicious Troll/Ogre/Goblin Food

There's an old saying here on the internet. "Don't feed the trolls"

Also Rule 14 of the internet EXPLICITLY States

Do not argue with trolls - It just means that they win.

Silver Fluffenbu2/8/2016, 4:07:43 AM1 votes

why would you think if you can't stop a troll from doing what he does, you can stop a reacting yeller from doing what they do?

blkh12/8/2016, 4:50:38 AM1 votes

Don't blame it on the rain, blame the meteorologists.
