WatchMojo's Top 10 Most Toxic Video Game Communities

And the winner is.... you guessed it. It's us. We tied with DOTA 2 for the top spot on most toxic video game community, ranking in over CoD, CounterStrike, Halo, Minecraft, Dark Souls and others. This is seriously not something we should be proud of! This is just one more bit of evidence proving that we, as a community, need to step up and change the way things are going.

It's time for us, as players, to take the initiative and make a positive impact in our games by not flaming, griefing, trolling and harassing. It's time for us to take some of the responsibility for what happens in our games, rather than simply blaming Riot for not having strict enough enforcement of the toxicity and trolling rules. Riot is one company with a few thousand employees. There are hundreds of millions of us across the world. All it takes is one little step to start things on the way to a better community. The next time someone flames, and you want to snap at them? Don't. Don't say anything. You've just made the community a little bit less toxic.

you are wrong to blame the players. its basically the same players in every game. i play CoD and used to play minecraft. i am not toxic at all in those games. but i sometimes am in league of legends. why? what is different? it is the game itself.

the basic rules of the game are toxic. the way if your teammates make mistakes your enemies get stronger is a design that naturally makes people upset with their teammates. this is a huge part of the problem. the game itself is designed to make your teammates impact your own level of effectiveness in the game like no other game does.

the way you are trapped in games for 40+ minutes and cant leave no matter if you have a troll, or an afk or the other team is fed into unstoppable monsters, or if something just comes up in real life and you dont want to play anymore, you cant leave unless you want to face punishment. this is an extremely toxic setup. i have been in games i can only describe as slow torture. what other game is like that?

imagine if in CoD when your teammates fed kills your enemies got extra damage and took less damage from your shots. then imagine the games lasted 40 minutes and you cant leave. you would soon have a game as toxic as LoL.

its not the players. its the game.

WatchMojo is really just clickbait. I'd like to see stats and just how they measure an element as abstract as 'toxicity'.

They should check out the YouTube community if they want to find a toxic community.

Totally with you there, the first step for a better community is to behave better yourself.

However, the problem has roots much deeper, and won't be simply fixed putting some "personal growth" lessons in application. Fact is the "beacons of positivity" in the community are few and far between and let's face it, the battle against inappropriate behavior isn't in our favor.

Ever since the tribunal has been disabled in favor of automated systems, player behavior has progressively degraded to the point where it's at today, and the future looks pretty grim. Used to be that the Summoner's Code meant something, now it seems to only be an artefact of an age past.

The automated systems, while i'm sure they're doing what they're supposed to do effectively, are not a solution that can function properly in a "stand-alone" fashion to ensure proper enforcing of the Summoner's Code. In fact, the main thing they're missing that the tribunal offered: Transparency.

Tribunal, while it certainly had it's flaws and quirks, was a very transparent system, you would cast your vote on cases, and from there the system handle the rest, but the important part here is that you actually had feedback on the cases you voted on. That feedback was key, you could clearly see the impact of your vote. Just seeing the results of that gave a totally different meaning to player behavior, because everyone knew that reporting inacceptable behavior actually meant something.

Riot, if you are reading this, please give us the tools to make this community better. We do not wish to be judge, jury and executioner, we just want our voice to be heard and to know it was heard.

As much as people love to complain about how "toxic" this community is, it should also be mentioned that its the most easily offended and oversensitive community ever too.

"League is the worst" doesn't mean anything to me unless there's something to back it up. Yeah, there's a lot of toxicity - just as there is in every competitive online game - but Riot also does more than most to try and fight it.

It's time for us, as players, to take the initiative and make a positive impact in our games by not flaming, griefing, trolling and harassing.

Amen to that.

Can you link your article in the op please?

It sounds like an interesting read.

The fact that the minecraft community is toxic is just a show of how aggressive and violent kids are now, literally they have 0 limits and thinks everything from games are to be applied in real life

"Don't hate the player, hate the game"

I think the biggest point I can make is that the root of the toxicity stems from the game, not the players. The players might have their moments, but they are no worse than any other community. Getting stuck in games in roles you don't want to play in, with people you don't want to play with and having no way to leave without penalty when it fails nor even being able permanently mute people(since all mutes expire in post game chat) is what really is the root of all toxicity in this game.

Sorry. But this community won't change. It's too late 😔. Might as well switch to better made games

I guess winning is good...? I'm not quite sure XD

Oh, WatchMojo, that's a credible source. But, like with DOTA2, it's just that the game itself can get tense and you can't leave for 40 minutes. That makes tempers get high.

While i really take WatchMojo with a grain of salt, it is somewhat true in this case, but we have all knew that! And its true what people say about this game. There is just too much to list (although most of you guys did) We could try as a community to change, but because of how popular this game we arent really going to see any changes because of the huge player base.

I try though. i rarely talk in chat, and no matter the mode i try to win. But most people also dont understand that this game NEEDS to have a winner and a loser, but that everyone will be on both sides. people will blame and make any excuses which leads to others being toxic.

want the best solution for all this toxic stuff to almost completely be gone.. tell RIOT to turn off chat completely and only use the ping system...

this is something i do when i get into game as jungle.. i just ping and have 0 chat on my screen... its peaceful and i do my thing... if they dont listen to the pings that is on them.... (they say well i want to listen to music... ok then dont play a game that u dont enough attention span to listen to music and play the game)
