Why are Smurfs so Toxic towards new Players?

Sup,

made an alt acc for Zoe and while being only lv 10 there is always this one Smurf who shittalks the whole Team for being bad. I mean what do you expect from a lv 6-12 match with mostly new Players? That they are all Challengers?

I dont think they really are. The problem is a lot of people who are leveling new accounts are people who got banned for toxicity. Those are the ones.

Aterpater11/22/2017, 3:36:00 PM19 votes

Well, smurfing is basically toxic behaviour, so what do you expect? LoL is kind of the only game where smurfing is encouraged and don't count as a bannable thing what they try to purge by any means (think about limited account policy all around Steam, phone verification for Ranked in DotA, etc. etc.). Smurfing is only good for the smurf himself, and the company as smurfs provide seriously false statistics about active player count. Everybody else just sucks. And even the "long queues in high Elo" thing is nonsense as those queues would be much more managable if half of them wouldn't jerk around on smurf accounts. Anyway, smurfing goes hand in hand with toxicity, you shouldn't be suprised at all.

Karunamon11/22/2017, 3:30:03 PM13 votes

It's not just smurfs - it's also people (who haven't learned anything) coming off of permabans creating new accounts.

I've got a wishlist.

  1. People are banned, not accounts. Every perma'd player gets the full T1 treatment. Not realistic to enforce, but this is a wishlist after all :)
  2. One account, per person, per lifetime. Smurfs be gone, play at your own level, thanks.
Optymism11/22/2017, 3:04:24 PM11 votes

Honestly, if you create a new account, 60% of the players have already played this game. Now with the new runes that number might even increase.

So they are toxic, because either they were banned from their main account and they are still crying over nothing, or because they expect you to not click Mouse2 and stand still farming.

Don't get me wrong, loads of people are starting to play LOL, but there are a lot of experienced players in level 1-20 matches.

Cellrius11/22/2017, 3:03:34 PM9 votes

Because they're bad at the game.

Tortunga11/22/2017, 5:09:49 PM7 votes

Most Smurfs I have had the displeasure of playing with are toxic.

They always trash talk losing lanes; they trash talk the jungler when they lose lane themselves; they trash talk the Support if he is losing in a duo lane; they trash talk the team when he went in 1v5 and the team didn't follow up (even if we are all at the other side of the map).

Most smurfs think they are so much better then everyone ells, and if they are in a losing game it's always somebodies ells fault. Even when they play vayne vs darius top and go 0/5/0 in 10 minutes (The last game I was in with a smurf).

junglerboy1611/22/2017, 6:45:16 PM4 votes

Because genuine new players don't exist anymore, so they feel justified slamming the less skilled smurfs with vitriol. /s

Probably banned toxic players making new accounts honestly, or the types who create alt accounts for the sake of stroking their egos and stomping games.

dominusx11/22/2017, 4:10:48 PM3 votes

Because its some random low elo players who think making a new acc will get them out of the gutter. Hint you wont climb anyway.

Actual smurfs aka high tier players simply stomp and move on or make friendly banter occasionly.

xxxDogmanxxx11/22/2017, 5:59:42 PM3 votes

In my experience, most real smurfs usually don't use chat at all. If you're smurfing, you'd just stomp the enemy and move on to the next game. The toxic ones are the players having difficulty closing the game out, and thus are probably not too far above the level they're "smurfing" in.

ZT Xperimentor11/22/2017, 6:07:04 PM3 votes

I've seen plenty of smurfs, but the other most debilitating kind are the silent saboteurs, running around stealing farm and kills from newer players effectively starving their team. But yeah I agree the concept of smurfing is part of what drives off new players, regardless of why they're smurfing in the first place.

YoungFarmer11/22/2017, 8:14:27 PM3 votes

usually those are smurfs who main accounts are like silver. I don't flame anyone on my smurf.

Dasdi9611/23/2017, 12:05:25 PM3 votes

It is because despite being on a new account and playing with new players, they still expect the new players to play up to their standards.

Tacosrock11/23/2017, 4:09:59 AM2 votes

Because they're stupid.

To be honest, I've leveled 5 maybe 6 accounts, and I still have 2 more that I didn't finish leveling yet... and I rarely encountered this problem. Unless YOU are contributing to the problem, most players do not say anything in low level matches. Leveling new accounts actually taught me something, not about myself, but about the game in general. What I learned was that most players are peaceful people, who generally don't say much in game outside of maybe Flash or something here and there.

I HATE playing ranked, mostly because I have to grind out Silver every single season... Last season I couldn't do it. Silver is literally the worst ELO, and not because the players are hard to play against. It's because they are hard to play WITH. After getting 4 accounts into Silver last season, I finally realized this and I've just given up on playing ranked completely. Every single game from level 1 to placement 10 has always been enjoyable.. if I get placed into Silver however, the 11th ranked game is always hell on earth. You have to have the composure of gods to make it through 40+ games in Silver ELO to reach Gold, and from there it only gets slightly better.

I'm not one to mute people, I'd rather just not have a chat box at all if I have to mute someone... yet every other game I play every season I am forced to mute at least 1 or more players. The end of last season (6), and the beginning of this season (7), I really started to tilt hard. I got punished by the system a couple times, I've uninstalled League from my computer every single time this has happened.. The cancerous environment wears on you. I've already decided that after preseason, I'm never playing another ranked game of League of Legends again.

So, not to be rude.. but I really have trouble agreeing with you saying "every game there's always this smurf shit talking". I have MANY accounts of pre-30 experience that tells me otherwise. There might be one here or there, but there's no way that's it's every game. Perhaps what you consider "shit talking" is another player honestly trying to help you improve. If someone suggests a different item for you to build, rune for you to use, etc. that's not "shit talking". I can't say for fact that's really what you are experiencing, but I've rarely seen anything negative in hundreds and hundreds of pre-level 30 games.

Ungrateful Thug11/23/2017, 3:48:52 PM2 votes

As someone who smurfs from time to time, I don't understand it either. My whole feeling is that when I go into a lower elo game, I know what I'm going to get. I don't expect people to play at the same level in which I would expect to see on my main. I can't even get mad at people for losing or not doing what I think they should do, because of obvious skill discrepancies. Frustration is natural from time to time, but I will never flame someone. People in lower elo or people who are new aren't dumb, they're just ignorant and don't know any better.

Hermedangler11/23/2017, 6:50:25 AM1 votes

Honestly if it's someone like that I don't know. However, when I smurf I'm pretty chill, but usually there is someone who thinks they are the shit and shittalks everyone. At that point I just shittalk and screw around because if they don't want to win, why should I?

For your example, I don't know. Those smurfs are usually the bad ones anyways. Like the ones who are barely in Diamond and thinks it means something and want to show off.

GG Thanks For LP11/23/2017, 7:05:25 AM1 votes

Im only toxic when I tell them specifically 3 times to "stop overextending their lane" for example, beens they always die when they do it, but then after the 4th time I just get annoying and do soft flame, which isnt even flaming really. "Why are you doing that, youve legit died 3 times in a row overextending that lane, learn from your mistakes", is what Ill tell them then boom im muted reported and 10 chat restrictions.

Not even trying to be toxic, lm legit trying to help you guys so you can improve and so you quit throwing the game so we can win the game. But you guys just dont listen and take every advice given as flame, legit annoying. And annoyance is the only thing that makes me mad.

T4underbolt11/23/2017, 8:38:42 AM1 votes

I would rather ask why smurfs has to ruin games in lower divisions. Guy makes a smurf and picks his main lee sin with 90% winrate going rampage 30/0 in ranked game. People who deserve to climb lose, those who dont win and then make problems for people because they dont belong there. Next game another smurf this time rengar main going 35/0. And so on. Smurfing should be prohibited as long as you have access to main account. If you lost it or got permabanned. Fine do new account, but dont make new account just because you want to stomp and go 30/0, because you are hard stuck on your main and too bad to play in your own elo.

Teemo Gromp11/26/2017, 10:02:54 PM1 votes

I created a new account only for my first main character for 7.5 (!) years, Tristana. And of course, I am back at Level 1, right now at 10 or something and I often hear the "He/She is new, stop flame him/her".

But then, I had not a SINGLE real NEW PLAYER that also really WANTED TO LEARN something.

There are only two type of bad players so far:

a) A premade that does not go on a lane togehter, e.g. a beginner Sivir and a Yasuo, the first on bottom and the latter on top. The problem is, that often the enemy is then also premade and usually on a lane. So a random and a noob are on a lane together and don't really work together. The poor support has enough of a Sivir right-clicking mind-numbingly until she is dead (I witnessed that with an Amumu) and just said that she sucks - for obvious reasons - and the suddenly her toplane premade interfers and rages and yells the "SHE IZ NEW NO FLAMERINO". And guess what, I am so tired as fuck about this bullshit - also a fault of that garbage matchmaking justifyng insanely different premades (Level 35 and 3 together, enemy is average 15 for example, too much for that Level 3).

b) People that do not think, do not speak, and behave like bots. Listen, I never played Battlefield in my life, or when I first played let's say Tetris, I learned the very basic things pretty quick. LoL might take some time to master your champion, but seriously, if the enemy Ashe is 0/12/0 because she is permanently on bottom, right clicking minions, not using skills, not talking at all (especially in Europe with our 15+ languages, they often do not speak English for some reason, because education is not a thing in Poland apparently) and fires her ulti 10 meters off any target than it has nothing to do with "being new", then you are sabotaging.

When playing Tetris the first time, I did not die 12 times in a row because I did not figure out that I can erase lines. And an Ashe should realize when her health goes down, that she might move off the lane. Of course, there is THAT guy on the winning team profiting from that Ashe that yells "SHE IZ NEW WE ALL LEARNDZ THE GAYM". Well, learning the game and being worse than beginner bot are too differner things.

There is not a single real newbie that says "Man, I am new, how does this work?" or "how do I shop?" or someting. They are just there, a bar of lead and suck big times. I had a Brand of the same level, just dying forever, always away from any teamfight. He did literally NOTHING to learn the game, but he talked big and in the same dumb reasoning like this thread: "I AM NEW, DO NOT JUDGE ME THAT I DIE ALL ALONE AND NEVER USE Q, W, E, R".

themachamp11/22/2017, 11:47:19 PM1 votes

If Riot didn't permaban accounts then we would have less of these toxic people infesting the lower levels.

Barkley11/26/2017, 10:08:01 PM1 votes

I always compare smurf LOL to playing Texas Hold 'Em with someone who's never played before, and they just go all-in every hand.

As a person who knows very well how to play Hold 'Em, its infuriating to get beaten by someone you KNOW has no idea what they're doing. Especially if they gloat about it.

But that's if you're losing... I have no idea why people are toxic on winning teams, or teams that are trying their best. That just screams "angsty basement dwelling neckbeard" to me.

Ungrateful Thug11/23/2017, 8:10:00 PM1 votes

It's your jungler's responsibility to know who is fed and who isn't. If he walked into your lane and died because he didn't take that information into account, then that is on him.

Don't be discouraged. Just try to learn from the loss.

WarlockDD11/24/2017, 3:13:17 AM1 votes

The player level and expreince is significance between the differnt elos. For 3example the other day i got a dimaomd player to que with me (im bronze) and he was supprised and a bit frustrated with the way i was playing. Like apprently in higther elos being ganked is a promiment concern, supports arent suppose to farm, and ppl dont just stand aroun farming minions. I think it comes with the territory. Like if a major league player played with junior league they both have very differnt skill level and there fundementals are differnet.

It depends. New player encounter rate is very small. Unless a new player states they're new, most "smurfs" will assume they're not. I'm guilty of smurfing plenty. 95% of the people I run into are not new. I've ran into legit 3 or 4 people going from lvls 1-30 that were actually new to league (I haven't made a new smurf in a year, though).
