Just because you're gay doesn't mean everybody needs to be comfortable with anti-gay hate speech when you say it. Especially since you're playing with strangers and they can't understand the context you're using the word in.

So that's the reason for the ban. You used hate speech and the scanners picked it up. There was no reason for you to be using chat like that. It wasn't funny, it didn't help anybody, it was simply you amusing yourself in a way that clearly upset others.

Winek Chan1 votes

How is calling myself gay an anti-gay hate speech word?

And no, I didn't amuse myself, Kayle called Graves, in enemy team, a %%%, and insulted him, so I did proceed to say I am a real one here. You can't assume that "it wasn't funny" and "it didn't help anybody" because I was having a chat with Kayle on that matter.

Jo0o3 votes

You didn't call yourself gay, you called yourself a homophobic slur.

Look, I'm not gonna be dense and insinuate that you're homophobic or self-hating or anything like that. But your words are indistinguishable from somebody that IS spreading hate. You can try submitting a support ticket to explain the situation, but you'd probably be lumped in with actual homophobic jackasses claiming to be gay to try to avoid being punished for using slurs.

Surely, as a gay individual, you don't think you're going to have an effective conversation about the nature of treatment of homosexuals and the use of homophobic slurs as insults DURING a game of league, do you? Because that's not an appropriate use of chat anyway, even without the slur use.

Winek Chan1 votes

I don't understand that one part- how is the f word close to being offensive? It means gay and that's all it means, not a homophobic slur. It's like saying that all black calling themself or someone else an n-word like a lot of rappers are all racist.

I can understand I'd be banned if I was calling everyone f-words, because it'd be the same as calling everyone gay for no reasons. But I called myself gay because Kayle in the enemy team was insulting Graves of being gay. There's a minimum of context necessary, and here the context necessary is that I called myself gay. My goddam club tag is Yaoi© for christ's sake.

I honestly can't tell if you're messing with me or if there's a cultural gap here.

Here in the States, the word you used is explicitly a homophobic slur. It's THE homophobic slur. Others aren't nearly as harsh or common. You can see here on the forums that it's censored, unlike standard curse words like fuck.

Winek Chan1 votes

I'm not messing with you here. I know the n-word is offensive because of the whole shit going on with the slavery and stuff, but I never really took the f word as offensive other than calling someone gay.

Can you care to explain to me why is the f-word offensive or is there no reason ?

Jo0o1 votes

See my response further down. Both words are considered slurs due to their historical usage, not because of their literal meaning.

You can't assume that everyone in the game was okay with the slur either. Clearly someone thought it was unacceptable, thus the report and suspension.

Winek Chan1 votes

Yeah, that wasn't the reason why Graves reported me.

Modi2 votes

Once you are reported, your entire chat log is subject to review.

Winek Chan1 votes

That's the problem- I wasn't even reported for saying that.

Kei1431 votes

How did you know that no one reported you?

That said, there might be some borderline case here. Submit a ticket to https://support.riotgames.com and ask them to review the punishment again.

No promises that they can remove the punishmnet, but worth a shot.

Winek Chan2 votes

Yo, I got my ban removed and honor restored!

But I have a question. The support said that another toxic chat could lead me to being permanently banned. Does that mean I didn't go back a step?

Kei1431 votes

HEY!! Congratulations to you for having the punishment removed.

Now I don't know what the support specifically said, but that shouldn't be the case.

He might just be telling you to not repeat this offense again.

Winek Chan1 votes

Thanks!

Here's the direct quote from the support: http://puu.sh/ywFPy/da32ac9dfc.png

More precisely: "It is highly possible that if the account will get audited again for chat toxicity, it will be permanently suspended."

I'm not planning on saying these words again, but I'm just wondering, did I drop a tier or neh?

Kei1431 votes

It means you won't get a 2nd chance for a reset like this, and the next time you do this, and through manual review, they will close your account down.

From the automated side, I think you are back to your previous level, whatever it is.

Winek Chan1 votes

Ah makes sense.

Thanks, have a nice day.

ModPeriscope1 votes

The last time you were punished, you were told about zero tolerance and how it is punished after the use of racial slurs.

No one said anything about homophobic slurs then, but this and things like "kys" fall into the same category of zero tolerance.

Winek Chan1 votes

Yes, last time I was punished, I had a bad game and flamed back. I've learned my lesson, and I'm not flaming back anyone. I wouldn't expect that just saying unsafe words would get me banned instantly.

ModPeriscope1 votes

Most of your chat was ok, but there were the slurs and insulting the enemy graves.

But yeah, they take slurs and kys pretty seriously, thus why it's a 2 week ban.

Winek Chan1 votes

I don't want to talk to the riot support because they act like robots, so let me ask you instead-

If calling myself gay in a different manner is such an offensive thing then why didn't I get perma banned? I got a 14-day before, and seeing this other thread I should be.

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/5nLVRHWG-a-quick-visual-guide-to-the-reporting-system

Also, why is the f-word considered so offensive? That's one thing I don't understand. I understand for the n-word, because it talks about slaves and all that shit, but why would f be so offensive?

I didn't really insult Graves either, that was my method of saying calm your shits, frustrated ape because he was enraged at his team for being "bronzes"

Jo0o2 votes

The homophobic f-word is offensive due to its history more than anything else, just like the n-word. There's nothing inherently wrong with the n-word in terms of its literal meaning, but it has a disgusting history. Both are dehumanizing, violent, accusatory ways of pointing out that somebody is different and inferior. The f-word is screamed at homosexuals by folks who would attack them, often physically. It's a rallying cry for violent bigotry.

If that's not the case in the country you're in, you might argue your point in a support ticket. I can honestly tell you that your word choice would be highly disturbing if you were in the USA.

Winek Chan1 votes

I don't live in the USA, I live in Canada but spent large part of my teenage hood in Africa. I mean, I would have avoided saying the word if I knew that It'd be such a big thing. I might try sending a report ticket, because honestly from people's reaction on the board I see it's quite offensive, and I won't be using it again.

But then again, I fear giving a report ticket will be utterly useless as 90% of the answers are similar to automated answers.

Going In Harder1 votes

the N word doesn't have to do anything with slaves. It evolved from the original form of negro and it wasn't until the late 17th century it was adopted to the N word as a racial, derogatory word.

Winek Chan1 votes

The more you know

Going In Harder1 votes

The funny thing is black streamers use it a lot and Twitch doesn't do anything about it. If a white streamer did it, they would get perma banned. That is what you call privileged.

Winek Chan1 votes

That's kind of unfair. I mean, the n-word alone isn't exactly racist, but privileging people isn't fair.

Going In Harder1 votes

The problem is everyone has feelings and they matter more than facts. We can go on why it is wrong to be gay, homophobic, racist, etc...but it all comes down to when people cry because they got their feelings hurt, they will get some type of punishment. Welcome to not only multiplayer gaming, but they real world, especially the US. Feelings now will matter more than facts. Who cares about feelings anyways?

Helpful advice which worked for me. If you start to feel like you are tilting or can't control your toxic fingers, just mute everyone and disable cross team chat with some music blasting and play the game. If you no longer enjoy it and feel like you are raging every game it is either time to take a break or quit for a while or all together. Many other games out there and there are other things to do besides playing games as well.

Winek Chan1 votes
  1. I wasn't tilted in this game, Kayle just called someone the f-word so I said that I was one, and that they shouldn't call people like this.
  2. I wasn't even reported for that in the first place, Graves was just mad crazy about calling me a noob and reported everyone.
  3. I don't live in the US so I never knew it was so offensive.
Winek Chan1 votes

Hey guys- update.

I've sent a ticket to riot. I've been banned in overall because I didn't know that word was very offensive due to, as someone else said, cultural gap.

I'd like to thank you all for enlightening me on that one word. Whether I'm unbanned or not (I have about no hope), I won't be using it again. Have a great day!

Good job on being restored! Now make sure ur on ur best behavior. Here is how you can restore your account to good standing fully after a few months:

  1. DO NOT TYPE IN CHAT (except what i say below).
  2. type gg wp after every win once.
  3. type /mute all at the start of every game.
  4. do NOT ever ping someone's teammate death timer or a MIA spam on a teammate.
  5. disable cross team chat in game settings.

Do this and you will be good in a few months. BTW I'm bi too (are you asian? j/w, your last name) and I'd gladly add you but I'm in NA (:(:() (you can add me other ways if you want to talk (steam, skype discord etc but i'm probably being creepy i bet) :/

Very few people get their accounts back. Make the most of it.

Winek Chan1 votes

Oh hey, thanks! I know, I was also VERY surprised they decided to lift the 14 days ban as I had literally no hope.

But don't worry about it, I'm very friendly and very far from toxic, but I will be careful because of what happened recently. Don't want to slip up twice in a row.

I'm more gay than bi and I'm not actually asian either (The chan is generally a filler for when "Winek" alone is taken, looks better than Winek44932 or idk what). And sure I'd be down to make friendly encounters even if we're in different servers!

Falkentyne1 votes

BTW do you want to add me on steam or skype or discord? steam and skype are same as this discord tag is #6092 Going through a lot of stuff right now >_>

YerroFever1 votes

It sounds like someone called you a fXX and then you confirmed it to take the venom out of the word and reclaim it as your own so it would be a false positive. The IFS isn't perfect and glad you got your situation resolved.

Winek Chan1 votes

Actually, it's more that someone else called someone else a f-word, which I thought wasn't cool, considering i'm gay. I just worded it poorly.
