Forum moderation has gone completely, totally insane.

Incident 1

I wrote a satirical "guide to making your team surrender" which described how a certain type of player gets pissed off and negative and makes it impossible to turn around a losing game. It was based on a person I'd just played with, but also my observations of a lot of LoL players. Literally anybody who actually read the post would realize it was intended to be humorous, it wasn't even subtle.

The thread was deleted for "promoting negative game behavior".

It was actually doing the exact opposite of that...

Incident 2

Someone wrote a wall of text rage post about how overpowered some champion was, full of misspellings and just over the top grammatical errors. I'm not even normally a grammar nazi, but this was basically illegible. I wrote:

"Maybe focus more on the English language and less on League of Legends".

I was given a 24 forum ban and my post was deleted for "harassment and abuse".

WHAT?

There was a time when these boards had the opposite problem, they basically had no moderation at all. But the current state of affairs is equally absurd. Any attempt at levity or snark is apparently ban-worthy, it's absolutely ridiculous.

Hello! I've reviewed your action history on this account for you.

In regards to what you've labeled as "Incident 1" above, you created a post in Gameplay & Balance titled "How to get your team to surrender!" That forum is for actual gameplay discussion, whereas Memes & Games would be the correct location for a satirical post about the game's current state. As posted, in Gameplay & Balance, it was seen as promoting negative behavior in-game and removed as such.

For "Incident 2" your reply to another player's statement in Gameplay & Balance was the following:

Tell you what man.

How about you focus less on playing League, and more on learning how to use the English language.

This is considered harassment of another player as your response was focused not on the discussion they were attempting to have but instead attacking their post itself in a negative manner. You were not banned for that post alone, but instead because it was the third such removal for harassing other players in the last 2 months. Just as with in-game punishments for negative behavior, the punishments provided by moderators based on negative posting behavior escalate both based on a continued pattern of behavior as well as level of offense.

While you're welcome to bring levity and snark to your posts here on the Boards, there are other places for it than Gameplay & Balance. Thanks!

There was a time when these boards had the opposite problem, they basically had no moderation at all.

That was not "The Boards", that was "The Forums", back then there was very little moderation and I find that a lot better than the massively draconian moderation we have now.

But aside from that, I agree with your general assessment.

At least riot is actually doing something. The toxicity level in normal games has increased and although they are reported, they are not punished. it's rather sad.
