Is playing support Ezreal banable? or even Punishable?

I was and still am under the impression that it is not.

I stated "the best support is the support that kills people." in pre game chat and had a well thought out plan. there was a groan in the chat and nothing else till the game loaded in.

So the adc afked and I was blamed for him afking. by the rest of the team. THEN when I said no to the surrender vote, I was again threatened of being reported because I was holding the team hostage? both flawless arguments if you ask me.

what does the community think? Was it off meta? yes.

was it troll and griefing though?

Playing off meta is never trolling or griefing. And it is not punishable or bannable

Were you trying to grief or troll? If no and you were playing the game to the best of your abilities then it is not possible to get banned for playing an off meta pick even if every single other person in the game reports you.

No it is not so long as you gave it your best efforts to win. What should be banned is that player who afk just because you picked ezreal support. Being afk on purpose is a lot worse than being an ezreal support who is trying. But of course, that player did not get banned or seriously punished I bet, nor did the other players who were blaming you.

Usually it's not.

If you wanted an unusual supp which has kill potential you could pick a mage. I personally like Xerath. And what was 'a well thought out plan' you were talking about?

So the adc afked and I was blamed for him afking. by the rest of the team. THEN when I said no to the surrender vote, I was again threatened of being reported because I was holding the team hostage? both flawless arguments if you ask me.

I mean, it was 4v5 and you played ez supp. i can understand why they thought you were holding them hostage. i don't think you were in the wrong for picking ez supp, but I think you were in the wrong for not surrendering. Morale of your team was low and you were outnumbered, and yet you decided to keep yourself, and other 3 players in that game. That just fueled more negative enviroment and lowered your chances of winning, which were low already since your adc afk-ed.

I've played my fair share of ahri and nidalee support (it's fun and I still play as a support) and I've never received a ban before. In my experience, if you want to do something off meta you should bring it up in lobby. Most people are ok with it if you tell them before hand and assure that you're still doing your role, just as something different. Otherwise, many people assume that you just didn't want to play support and were salty (even if that clearly isn't the case).

You weren't trolling or griefing and shouldn't be banned for it. Just giving you a tip as someone who enjoys going off meta myself.

knowing both the toxic side of the community and how riot is handling things, if you sneeze wrong you could get banned.

Not for one game, but don't do it a lot:

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/79aGu3wR-support-singed-isnt-banable-but-thats-not-the-point

https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behavior-moderation/FrILlWp7-14-day-ban-because-playing-nunu-support-with-smite-is-stealing-other-peoples-roles

Note that these people are a Diamond Singed and the number one Nunu in NA. Your performance doesn't matter. And it's only punished as "inting" despite not technically being inting because there is technically no punishment "trolling". The punishment is, however, the same.

Your issue is that you're ignorant of what off-meta means, compared to trolling.

Off-meta is picking Caitlin for ADC if she's performing poorly overall. Meta would be picking whoever is best that hasn't been banned.

Trolling is picking Malphite full AD for ADC, because that means your team is lacking a ranged ADC and are forced to play around your intentional bad decision.
