Friendly reminder to be respectful to players posting about their account punishment

Deep Terror Nami·6/1/2017, 9:39:57 PM·106 votes·2,935 views

Whether or not you think they deserve your respect, show it anyway.

You aren't helping anyone by saying "I'm glad you got banned" and repeatedly shoving their punishment in their face. By doing this you are lowering yourself, and are perpetuating a cycle of toxicity where you might otherwise be able to help this person improve. If they don't seem to care what you have to say regardless, then end the discussion and move on. Sometimes people just have to vent a little too, and are really frustrated; right then may not be the best time to talk sense into them, so it's better that you offer a helping hand and leave them alone until they are ready to talk to you in a constructive discussion.

It sucks watching someone get torn down by people that normally want to help, and I hate having to lock discussions where there was a better way to communication or warn and punish people that usually have something decent to say. Maintain your dignity and take the high road, not just for the benefit of the community, but yourself too.

I think the way people approach the topic starts this chain. If I were to make a thread asking for advice on what I did wrong, I would get better results than asking to be unbanned because @#$% riot. Which is 85% of the ban threads.

This needs to be pinned. I have seen almost every time I have been on this board. It's naive and a lot of the time people commenting don't even read the full post or even 10% of it.

Rengooo6/2/2017, 12:50:55 AM4 votes

Not going to lie, Riot employees don't help by commenting on what the person did wrong, it often just leads to more bashing of the op.

It should probably be dealt with away from the publics scrutiny (tickets or what ever they call them).

I'm disappointed in myself for sometimes becoming passive aggressive in posts like that, im sorry community.

You deserved to be banned. Is that out of line? What if there were listed reasons, A, B, and C?

I have seen unjustified bans over the years, and I have the riot support link memorized, and will direct players on how to appeal their punishment. The boards response time is very slow compared to the support ticket route.

Furthermore, I disagree with the notion that a player shouldn't feel ashamed for doing something wrong. Shame can help keep people civil. I won't even even pretend that bullying, flaming, and threats are shaming devices because those goes against the general rules of the boards.

The guidelines will need to be changed to reflect your thoughts, "insight into why players were punished" doesn't involve a tool to measure the amount "respect" to be shown at any point. I would argue to uphold the golden rule in this case since the amount of respect to show is not defined. Venting, ranting, shaming, are all forms of posting. As long as the posts adhere to the written guidelines, I don't believe that content should be formed using your specific methodology.

I can't believe after having removed this toxic guy from arbiter status, that Riot caves in and gives it back to him when he never learned from his punishment. He constantly was a "yes man" to Riot and never disagreed with them. He never stopped trying to be a League Boards Hero even when he was instructed that he wasn't an arbiter and should stop it. I guess everyone has to have something to make them feel important once in their life, even though for most of us it's not a chat room.

Thanks for this, Nami.

What if I tell them they deserved the ban, as in "You intentionally fed in over 10 games and told your top laner he was a useless n-word, you deserved it"?

Is that allowed or can I just not say "I'm glad you're banned"?

Martensitic6/3/2017, 3:33:10 PM2 votes

Whether or not you think they deserve your respect, show it anyway.

Respect is something that is earned.

You aren't helping anyone by saying "I'm glad you got banned"

Toxics who got banned for toxicity are not helping anyone with their anti-riot outrages, their sob stories or their Lies about how they are innocent, when chat logs show otherwise.

It sucks watching someone get torn down by people that normally want to hel

It sucks getting games destroyed by toxics.

It sucks even more seeing these same toxics come on the boards and pretend to be innocent, lie about what they did, QQ, tell sob stories and fish for support and understanding, when all they gave the community, were insults, abuse and ruined games.

K0SMOS6/4/2017, 1:36:18 AM2 votes

I definetly agree. We should not beat a dead horse by shoving their ban in their face but rather help them improve to become a better person in turn making us better people as well.

If the thread they posted were genuinely asking why they were banned because they cannot figure it out from the chat logs i would be respectful, however the way most of them start these threads is downright hostile with comments like fk what other people think is toxic suck it up you **** and let me play while insulting you!

So i will NEVER be respectful to people who post a help thread in such a way and you cannot reasonably expect others to show them respect either, this is not a college campus where we are establishing "safe spaces" free from debate or differing opinions which is the purpose of such a campus so why would you want that..? but regardless no safe spaces for people that start out their thread as an attack to others i don't care what the reasoning is.

ModFrom The Cosmos6/1/2017, 11:32:50 PM1 votes

There have been mistakes with banning in the past, so we cannot as a community collectively assume every person deserved it. Things you can do to be proactive and help with these discussion threads:

Refer them to player support so that they can have direct communication for Riot

Report posts that are defamatory and accusatory to allow moderators to take action

Converse about the issue neutrally and request full context and chat logs depending on the situation [slayer-pantheon-rainbows]

Thank you so much for posting this, it's always so frustrating coming to the boards and saying "Hey, this is why I got banned, what can I do better?" and having people tell me "Don't be such a toxic piece of shit" or something along those lines. It gets even worse when you point out that you just want to improve and ask them why they have to be hostile, as they usually tell you you don't deserve respect or something like that.

Scary Door6/4/2017, 11:19:38 PM1 votes

When someone posts a chatlog filled with racial slurs or wishing someone would kill themselves, I'm going to tell them that I'm glad they're banned. Because, frankly, I am glad that people like that are banned.

I was raised in an era where respect was something that you earned. I have no respect for people like that. I'm willing to be reasonable towards those that may have decided to "pop off" one day and lose it on someone, but I have zero tolerance for those that show complete disregard for others WITHOUT provocation.

Sometimes I do have respect for people to have the courage to come to this forum knowing that they've done something incredibly stupid but still posting their chat logs anyway. But that's about where the respect ends.

TL : DR - I'll respect those that deserve respect... racists/bigots do not deserve it.
