it is unnatural to just take abuse without defending yourself

you know how it is in a lot of these LoL games. you have a bad game and some kid on your team starts flaming you. and riot wants you to just sit back and take it. like that weird kid in who sits by himself in the corner writing down everything anyone does to him so he can hand the list to the principle after school each day.

so you are supposed to sit there and ignore the abuse but report afterwards. but the flamer knows from experience how far he can go and what words to avoid. so nothing is going to happen from the report.

plus a lot of these kids are pretty good at what they do. like ive seen them turn the entire team against the guy who is having a bad game. how can you sit there and not fight back when thats happening?

i mean we all want to be liked. when someone is turning our teammates against us our instincts are screaming to fight back and put him in his place.

im not sure how healthy it even is to just ignore that kind of stuff and then ignore our other teammates as they begin to blame us too. what does that turn us into? some guy who doesnt care about his teammates doesnt care about anyone else but himself? i dont want to be turned into that weird kid in the corner.

A member of society is expected to utilize the systems society has in place to combat abuse. That is the core of society: we give up our animalistic urges in the hopes we can become better than we were before.

Likewise, in a community here, you trust that Riot will mute or ban players who are abusing chat. You do not, however, turn to that abuse yourself - because you are then no longer the victim but a perpetrator. There is no defense in League - your words do not prevent any harm from coming to you other than making you feel better at the expense of your teammates.

No one is asking you to ignore abuse. They are asking you to respond in appropriate ways.

You mistake "defend yourself" with "retaliate". Defense implies preventing further harm to yourself or others. For you, its to simply use the mute button. Even if he continues to flame, it will never reach your ears (or eyes in this case) and thus further harm is prevented to you directly. Then you report afterwards. You don't need to ask for reports, or tell them you are reporting them. You just report (1 report flags the game for review). Include details of your complaint in the report ticket and it will be looked at.

Retaliation does not "prevent further harm" to you or anyone else. In fact, it sometimes eggs on the aggressor to flame harder or more often. Do not give the flamer validation by sinking to their level and acting as they do. It only makes you just as guilty as they are.

Understand that this is VERY different from physical confrontations, where at times the only way to prevent someone from hurting themselves or others is to subdue or (in worst case scenarios) kill them. It does not compare to verbal assaults on the internet where a simple button push prevents you from having to deal with anything they have to say.

To be sure, I certainly understand your frustration, and empathize with your feelings on the matter, but don't let your frustration cloud your judgement; take the path that is best for you and your account. Don't throw water on a grease fire, don't smother an electrical fire with blankets. Don't retaliate, as it makes the situation worse and often leaves you guilty as well. Defend yourself: Mute, and report. Good luck on the Rift!

No, what's unnatural is that you sit there and let them flame you. When you're just one click away from muting them. There's no excuse in the face of this planet not to. Riot gives you the option not to deal with it. But if you defend yourself by harassing them or arguing them, you're no better than that player who flamed you. Whatever punishment he gets, you deserve as well for retaliating.

No, there is no excuse for not muting them. Mute. Report. Move on. Stop blaming Riot for your own responsibilities.

"Defending yourself" would consist of pressing the mute button.

How badass would that be in real life? Someone annoying you? Press a button and as far as you're concerned, they don't exist. You can't see them, you can't hear them, they can't interact with you.

But you don't want that. You want to verbally punch the guy in the face.

That won't fly here.

It is not unnatural, it's called being mature. If you respond to them, it'll only make matters worse. Just mute them? It's not that complicated.

Ignoring people works better than you think.

Best of luck.

What i want to ask is how exactly does it solve the problem when you harass them/become toxic to them? You want to defend yourself? Like others have said mute them. 9 times out of 10 they are only doing it to get a raise out of you. Why give them that satisfaction? When you ignore/mute them you are basically taking away that power from them.

You can stand up for yourself, I do in game every time someone starts to get abusive !!!

I do it every time, yet I've never even been warned let alone punished and this is over a few accounts!!

It's easy, the very first rude comment made to anyone ( but me ), I ask or challenge them in a nontoxic way. This usually works, but if they are still mean to someone I'm very nice to the one being harassed.

I don't harp, piss or moan at the jerk, I say one thing maybe three then I ignore them. I've never mute in game yet recommend it to others ( never in chat ). I may even go out of my way to help the person that is getting flamed. Not at the expense of the game though.

I help the flamer also, but what I don't do is feed the troll.

They get their kicks from making you mad !
