The Automated Punishment System - How it Works

i am writing this because I'm tired of seeing good people with no ill intent get punished/banned by a system they don't understand. this is very close to how it works.

riot uses a computer program to handle their toxicity reports. they have a separate program to detect afks and another one to detect intentional feeding, but the toxicity detection program is the one you need to watch out for.

every player has a running total of their abusive/negative language used during games in which they are reported. this toxicity score is only added to if the player is reported in that game. the total is calculated for the most recent 20 games.

if you were reported in a game, the program is activated. the number of reports does not matter at all. 1 report will activate it the same as 9. once activated, it will scan your chat (including pre and post game lobby) searching for words and phrases the program believes to be toxic.

it does not understand context. it does not care if you are joking. it does not care if you were quoting someone. say any of the words or phrases it is looking for in any way and they are going to be counted against you.

after it has finished scanning your chat, it totals your toxicity score for the game and adds that number to your scores from the past 20 games. not every word is worth the same amount. each word has its own toxicity value and some score much higher than others.

if your toxicity score from the past 20 games totals over 100 points then the program assigns you a punishment. the first time you score over 100 points, the punishment will be a 10-game chat restriction, next is 25-game chat restriction, followed by a 14-day account ban, and finally a permanent account ban. if your score is above 150 points you will skip a punishment tier. 200+ points and you will skip 2 tiers.

when a punishment is issued your toxicity score is not reset to 0. your score will be set to 50 points that can not be cleared until you have played 20 more games. this makes it very easy to slip into another punishment shortly after the previous.

things that will score you toxicity points -

  • extreme toxicity. racial slurs, sexual orientation slurs, and encouragement to self-harm are worth the most. each of these is worth about 75 points.

  • giving up - 7-10 points. phrases like "i'm done", "I'm afk", "open mid"

  • insults - 0-10 points. there are a wide range of insults and if you are creative enough you might not score any points. but things like "useless", "stupid", "autistic", "r%%%%%ed" are all going to count against you. even minor ones such as "bronze" or "ggez" will score you some points. also the program knows that when used together with other words these become more toxic. "useless" said alone wont count for as many points as "this top is useless".

  • calling someone out - 1-5 points. this category seems to be the one that gets the most innocent people into trouble. "report", "toxic", "trolling", "inting", "afk" will all definitely score you toxicity points if you get reported. even if they actually are trolling or inting, do not accuse them of it. the system does not care and it will score those words against you.

hopefully this can help some people avoid punishment. far too many bans are going out to people who do not deserve them. in reality it is more complex than this and i am sure i missed some things but this is very close to how it works. if you keep this guide in mind before you type in chat it will help you avoid a lot of toxicity points.

good luck!

Do not take advice from the person who constantly posts "if you use the chat system, you will get banned"

Seeing people downvoting this and upvoting crap like "give us pizza delivery Sivir skin" is sad.

if that is true, it would be pretty sucky, because that means if you flame a troller in game, you can get YOUR OWN account banned

Well, I like to look at this from another angle. First of all it's a fighting game. You are not playing tiddlywinks. The object is to kill the other team members as many times as you can to win the game. When you see a fight on the street, there is a lot of arguing usually to go along with the fight. That is natural not toxic. I am not talking about the people that make sexual, race etc. comments. I am talking about arguing over the game play. They will happen no matter what riot does and they know it. That I believe, BELIEVE, is the only thing Riot can really control. Chat. The cannot control AFK Junglers who spend 95% of the game farming and then run in for a kill steal. They cannot control intentional feeding unless they self identify or a certain number of players report that and most people don't care, particularly if they have won the game. They just move on to the next game.

They can address chat. That's all if you think about it.. But that is a double edged sword of course. As long as people can just start a new account the really toxic players just start over and create the same mischief. But even more questionable is the fact that it actually helps Riots statistics. 1 player suddenly becomes 5 in terms of the starts if they have that many accounts so the true stats I believe are skewed. In addition, I BELIEVE, no facts to back it up, just thinking, that it also helps riots bottom like because most people once they have the Champions they want and the skins don't spend another dime in the game. Why should they? To get the newest skin? Maybe, but that does not seem logical. Most people are pretty tight with their money and don't want to feed a "free" game with endless buys.

But, if you ban them, they have to start over and spend the coins to get the same stuff again they already had. Not saying that Riot would do that with intent. But that would be a benefit for them. True trolls never spend a dime in the game. ZERO, It's all supposition, but just ask yourself. How many accounts do you have???

Very interesting a reverse engineering. It would be a relief to many players worrying about the false-positive reports.

Btw nobody needs to "avoid" penalties.

I myself isn't that a good person. When I think I'm offended with no reason, I'm always demanding him/her a further explanation.

You just play a game as citizen/civilian like every day life. No specific technique is needed to it. So "toxicity score" won't be any trouble for you.

You just respect the others (including their poor decisions). Don't violate the others' free will. ("/all report teemo!" is a total violation.) That's all. And that's what Riot does.

And if you are fanatic, you shouldn't stop using "toxicity score" words. If Riot punishes you or not, you just have to do what you believe shall be done by all means. That's the how your ethic works.

i feel like your "points" are completely arbitrary. i've gotten banned a lot, and none of them have been for anything other than "kys" and inting. the rest have been chat restrictions because of chat spam

My acc full of skins got banned when I flamed a player that was intentionally feeding. I called him hardstuck, inter, weak mental and told the enemy team to report, because I didn´t know those words could get you banned. 40 euros were just scammed because of missinformation and a player who ruined the game for other 4 people got away. I guess riot just gives priority to aply these childish rules instead of baning trolls. Its a competitive game so its normal that there is some flame and besides that, its not appropriate for young kids, since it has flame and sexual implicit content. Idk why riot decided to be so strict with these rules but sure as hell that the trolls keep playing and inocent players get banned.
