there has always been a solution to toxicity aside from just banning people

ITS CALLED MUTE I seriously get banning homophobic comments, racist comments, or people who say kys all the time.

I don't get why there's a ban on being competitive in ranked and getting pissed when the competitiveness of the game is being sucked out by one or two fucking guys every single game.

why do you coddle this community by banning ragers when there's seriously a solution already built in the game(mute)

oh, i'll tell ya why. its because when riot looks at their bottom line, they see that the ragers are most likey NOT going to quit league even if they get banned because they're invested into the game emotionally. so what's the best way to "deal" with the toxicity problem while also not hurting profitability?

ban specific accounts, but not hardware. then these people whose only fault were being competitive will make a new account to spend more money and time on thus not hurting riots profits, while also claiming responsibility of fixing the "toxic" problem.

you know what i define as toxic? int feeding, afking, or just in general trolling.

know what i don't define as toxic and don't report people for? getting pissed off because some braindead moron doesn't wanna listen to his team, and repeatedly ignores calls to group or requests to play safe and stop being super aggressive and repeatedly feeding.

online games shouldn't babysit and police mean words. ESPECIALLY when they have a mute option sitting RIGHT THERE.

but its just more of this "IM OUTRAGED" Generation at work.

how about instead of being outraged by the vitriol being spewed your way for ruining games, you just fucking mute people and get good? oh no the human ego can't allow that.

If I'm muting someone, thus limiting my options of teamwork in the game for the purpose of winning, their behavior has already reached the point that it made the game unenjoyable for me.

At that point, I'm just trying to get through the game.

How about instead of spewing vitriol at another person over a damn video game, you control your behavior? Oh no, the human ego can't allow that.

If you say things in such a way that you expect those you're with to mute you, wouldn't it be easier to just mute yourself and not type it?

In every single teamgame there is, you get trown off the team is you swear at your teammates often. Even at the highest lvls of play (in esports,soccer,rugby,..) where their is tons of money an fame on the line that behavior isnt and has never been accepted. So why should it be oke here ? Are your games for a couple lp really that more competetive?

Mute is preventing your exposure to toxic chat. It does not cure toxic behavior and prevent it from happening. Treating symptoms vs curing cause... it's a very big difference that you are claiming are the same thing.

Think of this example:

Player 1 is toxic and lets just make an example that this person has a kind of viral infection. The virus can be airborne and transmitted when someone coughs through the moisture droplets in the cough.

Player 1 goes to the cafe and decides to engages in a conversation with 9 other people, Players 2 to 10.

Player 1 coughs on Player 2 at the cafe.

The mute button is like putting up a bubble around you so that you no longer have tho be exposed to that cough. However, that person is now exposed.

You're not curing toxicity, you're just giving people extra ways to defend against further exposure. After that shield bubble goes up, Player 1 will still have that viral infection.

Fixing toxicity would be giving player 1 anti-viral agents that cure his infection so that Player 1 no longer coughs.

Unfortunately, Riot cannot forcefully give you those anti-viral agents. You have to seek them out yourself and take them. The only way Riot does that is by handing out punishments and warnings telling you that you need to cure your toxic behavior.

Those anti-viral agents are coping mechanisms and pro social behaviors in a competitive environment.

Pro social behaviors in a competitive environment doesn't mean you're all smiles and rainbows all the time. It can come with some constructive criticism to your teammates and some trash talking to your opponents. That does not mean telling people they're n- - - ers or they're f- - - -ts or they should go kill themselves or spamming pings until people's ears bleed or intentionally feeding to force a loss or opening your lane to make them win faster or whatever other trolling/harassing behavior.

EDIT:

Toxicity is expressed in more ways than just typed out words. That's why you're wrong about mute being the solution to toxicity.

TO REITERATE

i'm not talking about toxicity where people say kill yourself or spew racist/homophobic sentiments either.

im talking about the "toxicity" that is literally just becoming anything people don't want to hear.

you don't wanna fucking hear it? MUTE EXISTS FOR A REASON.

im totally okay with banning racist comments, kys comments, and in general just hateful evil things said.

i'm not okay with bans because for multiple games i got pissed and called people feeders and bad.

you don't fucking see EA, Activision, blizzard, or anyone else banning for calling other plays bad. so why the fuck is it okay for riot to do it?

it's not. its just fucking thought policing at this point.

oh and the golden rule "if you cant say anything nice dont say anything at all" is fucking stupid.

thats how shit DOESN'T get changed.

when i say "hey play safe and stop feeding" i don't say it to piss a guy off and be an asshole.. i say it because that's what the fucking guy is currently doing, and saying nothing will CHANGE NOTHING.

So, were gonna allow people to shoot at other people at will?

I mean, Bulletproof Armor exists. So it is okay to do so, right?

Wrong. Bullets will still leave bruises and can break your bones.

Same with this harrassment. It can easily ruin someones mood for the game, because they are forced to mute someone.

Hypothetical scenario: player A is a serious douche. Constantly flaming, picking fights, baiting teammates, and just generally dragging down everybody's achievements. Never uses slurs, kys, or any of that stuff. Gets muted by ~60% of the people he plays with.

Is that okay?

I mean sure, people can mute him. But he's at least off-putting to just about anybody he ever encounters, and his teammates will always be at a disadvantage due to communication being stymied within their games. Is it not better to simply give him a chat restriction?
