A Memo to Kids who Do Not Possess Critical Thinking Skills

WHY do some people think that players have 100% control over their internet connection?

So I probably have about a 90% rate of perfect connection. 10% being a bad connection, could be caused by any number of things:

  • weather
  • my ISP
  • Riot

etc

Now, when I play a game and I see someone disconnecting repeatedly but they keep reconnecting I think to myself - ah, that's suck. That poor guy/girl is having a bad connection The fact that they keep reconnecting tells me that they are NOT deliberately trying to afk And yet there are always a group of kids that are like "report for afk"

Really? You can't tell the difference between a legit afk and someone just having a bad day? Because when that happens to YOU, you dont want to be reported, right?

But people act like that stuff never happens to them, and they conveniently remember when it does happen to them.

So, I was playing a Ranked Flex game, and about 30 seconds in, I can't move. "ATTEMPTING TO RECONNECT" flashes on my screen twice. Nothing I type is going through the chat.

So I disconnect. Restart the computer. Attempt to relaunch the client, and it freezes. I close out the client and get back in, problem solved. Except now I'm 4 Levels behind, and trying to catch up.

So this Yasuo is basically telling /all chat that it's my fault we're losing. (You know, because Support Nami should carry bottom, mid, top AND jungle - and since they all lose their lanes while I was gone, it's obviously my fault for not knowing that I was going to get disconnected)

I just... want to impart this wisdom on some of you kids who do not understand how things work. Shut your mouth for like 2 minutes. Think before you speak. Think about a similar situation in which this happened to you. And THEN be like ... ooooh yyeeaaa

mmk?

Yes it sucks for you to have a bad internet connection, but it's even worse for the other 9 people that have their game messed up because of it. You are expected to be able to resolve your connectivity issues before playing.

Besides, 10% is a ridiculously high rate. You should really get that fixed.

I pay good money for mine and it's still pretty god awful.

Seems legit. I mean your afk caused a 4v5.

This lowers pressure in bot lane allowing the enemy to push and take bot which opens mid and top to more pressure and ganks.

While you did not do this intentionally your afk did attribute to the defeat.

Should he have said anything? No, That is uncalled for. What the Yasuo should have done is Report after the game and moved on.

Just like what you should have done about the Yasuo harassing you about your disconnect.

MUTE. REPORT. MOVE ON.

Whining about someone else whining is has less critical thinking then my 8 yr old son.

Critical thinking in your case would suggest that you'd be capable of understanding that the Yasou is not only correct but your excuse for an internet connections failure is irrelevant and furthermore because it's a single, inconsistent, random and unintentional event that reporting you for it wouldn't matter. Even if you've got a counter argument or propose that the failure is completely beyond your control. It's failed thinking, not critical thinking if you think your lack of a connection didn't impact the game for 9 other people whose connections have the possibility of poor performance at any particular time but didn't during the game. RIOT acknowledges and has accounted for in their penalty system a level of tolerance and understanding. It's not a single strike or 3 and you get penalized for a poor connection. It's multiple, ongoing and consistent afks/leaves/connection failures which result in anything meaningful.

If one idiot is giving you a hard time about one event then it's critical thinking to realize they aren't correct in venting their anger upon you but perhaps aren't wrong and regardless and most importantly will not effect you in any meaningful manner. Your recourse is to report them for harassment; there's nothing else that needs to happen. And there's no obligation for you to attempt to (poorly) educate people for having an opinion be it expressed poorly or not.

"Really? You can't tell the difference between a legit afk and someone just having a bad day?"

Is a statement that is entirely devoid of critical thinking. Suggesting people should have perception of something completely untrackable by human observation alone is just inane bullshit. Their opinion of your problem has no bearing on the reality of the situation. Their report carries no judgement. It simply flags a game for review. Critical thinking would suggest you want to learn all of what I've said and more in regards to the subject.

But personally, I think you used the concept to insult people instead of adhering to the principles it conveys which is no more better or worse than the Yasou who was upset with your connection.

Also...

Try learning about Critical Thinking... since you obviously misunderstand the concept. Dr. Elder and Dr. Paul suggest some great definitions, models and methodologies to understanding critical thinking.

'My connection is so bad that I frequently disconnect but I keep playing and I should never be punished for this' 'People who are upset about having a 4v5 because of AFK/DC'er are kids who do not possess critical thinking skills'

Just think about what you're saying for 5 seconds, just 5 seconds really.

You know... There is an easy way to measure you ms... It's called Custom game vs bots, checking ms, and leaving after you figured out if it is playable or not.

At the same time, people who are mad because someone disconnected out of their control (after doing the following) are just venting or really stupid. There are times when internet is uncontrollable.
