On the topic of "virtue signaling"

I ran across the term in my last game, and I did some research on it. I'm quite upset about the way it is being used.

To those who don't know, virtue signaling is typically an empty act of kindness, meant to publicly display political correctness / moral goodness. A good example would be the gun laws in the U.S. being so lax, and then the president sending "thoughts and prayers" to the victims instead of changing gun laws. Speeches by celebrities, governments, organizations with no follow through. You get the gist.

Now, saying that I'm virtue signaling, because I tell you not to treat your teammates like trash isn't signaling. It's being a decent fucking human being, so stop trying to justify being an asshole.

thoughts and prayers are not virtue signaling. And Id rather have teammates who want to win and play like it.

I'd rather people be virtual signalling than flaming other people. Even if it is empty.

Virtue signaling is presenting an opinion you don't actually believe in or do anything about, so that other people will like you more, typically a good, "virtuous" one. It can even be showing off something you actually do believe in because you think it will make you look better. It's a way to show people you belong in a group, or that you are a virtuous person. It's usually all talk and people who see through it will think you are a tool. Examples are someone with a "Save the rainforests!" sign on their car, who has never done anything to save forests
