Why is silver so much more toxic than bronze?

Toxicity generally lowers win rates by tilting allies and degrading team morale.

I played from B5 to S5.

Sure, bronze has a lot of feeders and people who make dumb plays, but most of them were pretty happy. Team mates would actively encourage each other. You had people going all-out to be positive. Stuff like cheering on the guy who picked Teemo into Garen and was 0/4 by the 15 minute mark.

If anything, people would try so hard at being positive that it would come across as fake and vaguely annoying. That was definitely better than directionless, toxic rage though.

In bronze, I'd usually only mute one person, about every three games. It was almost always the ADC. I main support and there were some Rambo ADCs who would make bad plays and die, then rage at me for not going in and dying too.

In silver, my mute rate is more like 3 people per game. AFKs, intentional trolls and childless, directionless racers are much more common here than when I was in bronze.

Through my whole climb out of bronze, I encountered one intentional feeder, and no dedicated trolls.

Silver, it's like at least one a game.

I'm still climbing slowly though, because the enemy team always gets it as bad as my team does.

At what ELO does the community get nicer? Also, why is silver more toxic than bronze?

Silver is toxic because 80% of Silvers belong in Silver 5 but believe they belong in Gold 5.

People in Bronze know they are bad and need to improve to get better and climb out. Silver players believe they are good because they aren't Bronze and think they can easily get to Gold and higher with enough play (Average League Players are in Silver).

I am no one to speak but I find Gold and above to be pretty decent.

I am currently Silver3 and I hate playing alone because of the reasons you just listed. Very, very toxic players and a lot more chat activity during the game than is reasonable.

However, I only play in a duo with my Gold2 friend. We get anything between High Silver and Low plat in our games and for the last ~20 games or so, games have been pretty peaceful.

If I had to generalize the toxicity you get from Gold players is overall more saltiness than straight up insults or verbal abuse. Platinum players tend to be edgy sometimes but bearable overall and I have very very good experiences with the few diamond players I have ever played with. There was one really toxic diamond that made us tilt and throw the game but all the others I have met yet have either been extremely nice and encouraging or didn't say anything at all, which is OK for me.

Never met a Master or Challenger though.

Stress. Silver is the cusp into the higher tier, where you actually get end season rewards, so naturally people want to desperately break through to gold.

Gold was quite nice in my experience.

Gold is kind of like coming in third place in a competition. While you aren't the best involved, you are happy to have placed and you will receive rewards at the end of it.

Also, it is considered on of the good tiers but there seems to be less inherent entitlement in being Gold and Platinum (and less pressure to reach Diamond).

The Gold 1 and Platinum 5 area is pretty bad though. I'm happy I climbed past it pretty quickly, but those were probably the worst games I had to play.

Then again, I've never been down to Silver 5 (I was initially placed in Silver 3 and hit Gold 4 within 40 games).

While there was more toxicity in my Silver games than in my Gold and Platinum games, I can partially attribute that to the fact that I was a Platinum skilled player and frequently crushing the enemy team, which could lead to them in-fighting about who "fed" me.

There's a few reasons based on how far into the season you are. This early, it's mainly because of Riot's soft reset system jamming gold and lower plat players from last season into silver. Then they get mixed in with decent players placing for the first time and getting silver (because starting fresh gets you placed higher faster) but not having the experience to mix with the gold/plats that got demoted. And then the season 5 silvers get back up to silver rather quickly because unlike the tiers above them, they end up playing with players at a lower skill level rather then the same skill level (bronze players don't get dropped below bronze on a soft reset). The end result is you're playing in some messed up hash of something along the lines of 3 or 4 gold/plat players per team so you can't hard carry and 1 or 2 silver players that stand a higher than average chance of throwing the game for one side.

Because Silver is where the unskilled boosters are at, duh.

Kids get out of bronze and into silver and they suddenly think they're hot shit.

I think they're about the same, but Bronze is usually tons of new people filled with smurfs so that's why Bronze/Silver is so terrible. You have people who've played 5 games in the same games with people who've played 5000 games, although match maker already does this regardless of smurfs, so maybe blame the matchmaking system.

And I'm not saying the smurfs are the ones raging, but when 1-2 player completely dominates all the other 8-9 players in a match, essentially ruining the experience that would have been had, it's bound to create rage eventually

I created a smurf because I kept getting matched with Golds+ consistently when I'm not that good, it's a bit ridiculous, but then to find these same Gold players in LEVEL 5 matches with complete beginners who obviously have no chance is ridiculous to the extreme.

Silvers are Bronzies that climbed a bit, and now have their assertions about belonging in Diamond confirmed. Everyone who doesn't do what they agree with is bad.

I've never seen play below S4 unfortunately, so I can't comment on the differences you're seeing.

What I can say, is that it FEELS like it's more toxic when you're unable to WIN. I.e. during my placements this season (I went 2-8 and placed Silver 4) I had a lot of toxic teammates and I also didn't play my best. Fast-forward to my climbing games where I played well and often got ahead, and no one seems toxic.

So what I'm saying is, it's not necessarily true that Silver is worse than Bronze. Just that you're sufficiently better than Bronze players such that your allies are often winning/ahead and are in a better mood due to this. In silver you're only slightly better, but not enough to make your teammates get an early lead and have a good attitude. So they get back to being toxic.

I've not seemed to have any toxicity problems in high silver to be honest. Climbing from S3 to G5 last season and S4 to S2 so far this season, I'd say there's been very little toxicity in most of my games. The games with toxicity often are the ones where some people are dying early, although even then most of those people keep their cool and still try to win (the real toxicity comes out when the game is really likely to be over and some people won't surrender, at this point it's people having given up and wanting to move on rather than tilt).

most people in bronze know they arent that great and are more humble about it. Silver players are exactly like platinum players in the fact that 95% of them thing they deserve the next rank

Magnum Mack4/10/2016, 3:18:19 PM1 votes

I haven't a clue. they aren't bronze anymore so maybe they think they're actually good no and deserve respect?

TL;DR They think they're people and they're only silver
